Why do some retailers demand a fax/scan/copy of a driver's license for ammo purchases and others don't? I've ordered ammo several times from Midway and Cheaper Than Dirt with no ID. I went to order a case of Golden Tiger from AIM Surplus and they want ID. Impact Guns and Ammo Man have similar rules, IIRC.

:barf:

I am of legal age to purchase ammo, but I'm not surrendering personal information to a company that might mishandle such information. I'll pay the extra few dollars and buy from Midway. Sorry AIM!

Personal information?

Like your name and address?

How do you expect them to ship it to you?

Take a picture of your ID and cover everything up except name, address, and date of birth. Email it to AIM. It's now on file.

Sheesh I did it with my cell phone in 10 seconds.

Ever sent a text message with picture? Just put an email address in the "TO:" spot instead of a phone number.

Purchase with Credit Card is proof of age 18; credit cards are not issued to people under age 18. That should alow purchase of RIFLE ammo and long guns. Pistol ammo and handguns has a required age of 21, so additional age verification is required.

How to verify age without disclosing personal info that subjects one to identity theft, is a big problem that needs to be addressed by state and federal government. An ID that shows the social security number, can not be safely disclosed to any vendor. Some state drivers licenses have shown the social security number.

A United States Passport shows your State of birth and your date of birth, it does not show your social security number.

I get this all the time. Customers call me on my cell phone and give me their address and credit card numbers but complain about sending proof of age. Come on, if I was out to rip you off I would not need your DL.:neener:

I get some that cancel their orders. They think that they are showing me. I look at it this way. They may be refusing because they may not be who they claim to be. Maybe they have a mental defect and it is good that they are not buying ammo from me.:scrutiny:

Its not my rules that I have to follow, it would be a lot easier if I did not have to collect ID's. But I have to.:(

This is pretty silly.

You'll give them credit card information, which is potentially MUCH more damaging, but not a photo ID.

Well, get a C&R license. Those work instead of DLs, plus you get a discount.

If you think that everything you purchase could not be traced if someone REALLY wanted to then you are very naive.

My question was addressing why some require it and some don't. As for personal ID, a driver's license has much more than just name, address, and DOB.

It's also a hassle. Why should I bother? (Yes, I know that sounds lazy and selfish).

A good deal of it depends on the STATE laws where they do business.

Even if the customer is out of state, they may have state laws that require all ammo sales to have an ID.

AIM is in Ohio, Midway is in Missouri. I'd guess if you looked into it you'd see that these 2 states have different requirements.

It is also legal, and some disrtibutors do it, to ship with the package marked:

"Adult signature required."

If your SSN appears on your DL, put tape over it if you choose.

If you're so paranoid that you're worried about any other DL info, I personally wouldn't want to sell you any ammo.

I always choose whoever requires the least amount of paper trail/ID/whatever, for privacy reasons (the ID gives them far more than address/etc., it gives them a picture and description of you--I don't like that being in the hands of total strangers with no way of knowing if it'll be protected). However, I do understand their reasons for requiring it, to protect themselves against the BATFE and such. I get most annoyed over sellers who want ID or worse, an FFL, for a pre-1899 or a muzzleloading gun. Just got surprised myself when a seller asked for a photocopy of ID after I'd purchased the blackpowder gun, and nowhere was that mentioned previously.:banghead:
