I purchased this 1969 Agent from a Pawn / Gun store in Robbins, North Carolina several months ago. It has what appears to be a case number or evidence number and initials carved into the top strap.

I occasionally carry this revolver and wonder about its history. A factory letter will tell me where it was shipped from the factory. I hope that it comes back to North Carolina because it makes it more likely that the gun has been in this state for awhile. It will be easier to research. I will have to do some digging with law enforcement agencies and courts to see if the numbers / initials can be tied to an incident or criminal case.

The letters "WMG" appear above the the following: 13/C99-3275.

If this means anything to you, or you recognize the format as that of a local case numbering system or evidence tagging system, please share your thoughts.

Every police case # I've seen starts with the two-digit year. Not sure what the 13/ is about, but I'm guessing it was a case from 1999. North Carolina has great open records laws. You could send letters to all of the sheriff's offices and municipal police agencies requesting documentation for case 99-3275 and see if anything involving a firearm comes back.

There are about 100 counties in the state, and probably several times that number of municipal police agencies. That's a lot of letters to mail.

You might want to start off by asking the pawn shop what they know. They can also probably dig through their bound book and see who they got it from.

Thanks Steve. I think that I will check back with the shop. I stop by every now and then when I pass through mid-NC.

I am an attorney in North Carolina...so I will have no trouble checking court records when I get things narrowed down. You are right about NC open records.

Interestingly, I just bought a Detective Special off Gunbroker from a KS dealer. Mine, too, has a "case number," which was revealed in the info about the gun. It appears 3 times on the gun. Not sure if the dealer was aware of the other two, but one of the locations is where yours is.

He said that he'd received several guns from Puerto Rico, but I don't know if this was one of them.

I did a quick search and turned up nothing.

A serial number check shows mine was made in 1961.

It needed a Tyler-T-Grip. I found a used one on Ebay and bought it before I received the gun. If you didn't know the T-Grip didn't come with the gun, you sure couldn't tell.

I've shot it and it didn't impress me too much, but I only had two kinds of reloads with me. Didn't have any factory, so I've not given up. At least it worked 100%

I'd say WMG might be Officer's initials and 13? 99 is obviously year and 3275 is the case number for that year ( fairly big town?). Just a guess but seen lots of police auction guns like this and even have a Big Buck knife marked like that that had a sheet wrapped around it from Sacremento Ca. said murder case.

UPDATE:

This mystery may be solved by pure luck. This afternoon I contacted a guy about purchasing a Smith & Wesson Model 42 snub and he mentioned that it had previously been seized by police, held in evidence, and later sold at auction. I told him about this 1969 agent. It turns out that he is a retired Kentucky State Police officer and familiar with the marking practices of many law enforcement agencies. He suggested that the markings in this Colt may be KY State Police markings.

The "13" would be Post 13, "C99" year 1999, and "-3275" is the chronological case number...very much like "Navyretired 1" said. I forwarded pictures and he confirmed that it was likely KYSP. We are aggressively pursuing this lead. Updates to follow as information is available.

Wow, sometimes the cards just happen to fall just right. Please keep us posted!
