Hi
Late night discussion few nights back among friends got me to start this thread. We were debating on ideal set of 5 handguns that we could live with and that covered all of our needs. Please pick that you think was a better set of guns and discuss your pick?

Thanks

Any 1911, a Ruger MKII (preferably with a silencer), .357 revolver...2-4" barrel, .45LC single action, .44 Magnum with a barrel from 4-7"

I leave the choice of manufacturer (except on the Ruger) and other variables to the user.

My needs cannot be covered in five.

S&W M&P 40
S&W M&Pc 40
SIG P290
Some sort of 380ACP auto.

Ruger GP100 357 Magnum.
A 44 Magnum revolver, Ruger or S&W.

Anyway, from your 4 choices, I chose the second one.
I do not think I mentioned all I need.

Sorry, poll is lame..................no .22's

My five handguns I would be happy with?

Colt Woodsman
FN/Browning Hi Power
Glock 19
Ruger LCP
Colt Combat Commander

I'd be the fourth vote for none of the above, but I decided to pretend I absolutely had to pick one of the options. For me, that's Set #2. It had to include a Glock 19, and if I had a USP 45 and an HK45, the HK45 would be the easy decision, but it would be nice to include that DW 1911, and I really don't want more than one handgun in .45 ACP, which is a feature of both your lists with a G19.

Having said all that, my ideal set of five would include just two of the guns in your lists:

1. Glock 19 (from your list)
2. DW 1911 (from your list)
3. Glock 34
4. Ruger LCR
5. Ruger Alaskan

Those five handguns include every handgun I'd ever need or want, and the Ruger Alaskan is really just filler, to get a .44 Mag on the list. Neither a need nor a want at this point, but easy to see it becoming a want in the future.

I could live with my Ruger Blackhawks in .357 Mag and .45 Colt. These would handle my need for a daily carry gun and could be used for hunting in my area. For the times I need something more discreet carry or to serve as a BUG, my Ruger LCP handles those jobs. I have a Single-Six coming for a Christmas present from my wife this year, just have to decide on which barrel length, tore between the 4 5/8 or 9 1/2 versions. And I'll throw in a S&W M64 4" barrel .38 Spl, just to have five pistols listed.

Not very good combinations for me. I did not vote for any. If I had to choose it would be last option only because it does not include a Clock.

the poll options are not ideal for me at all, I would pick:

1. Glock 34
2. Lcp
3. Glock 26
4. 4" 686
5. Colt anaconda

If I could only have 5, which would be a bad world to live in.

I'd be the fourth vote for none of the above,
No, you'd be about the twelfth.

Funny that three of the four choices involve a Glock.
Agenda, anyone?

Definitely needs a "None of the above, and define/defend your pick"

That would open up the conversation a bit.

None of the above. I am allergic to Glocks. The final option has redundant revolvers and a functionally inferior HK compared to the USP.

Most of his threads follow this style... Glocks or HKs, just depends on the day.

I voted the last option, but only because it is the only one without a Glock. My true response would be none of the above.

+1

My pick five:

Beretta 950 Jetfire
Walther PPK=L .32
SIG P210 w/.22 kit
HK P7
FN Hi-Power MK II SFS

I voted last but none of the guns would make on my list.

1. XD45
2. Ruger SBH 44 mag
3. S&W 29-2
4. Ruger MkIII
5. Pfeifer-Zeliska in 600 NE.

Of the limited choices you provided, I ended up with the second (Glock 19, HK 45, Sig P220 Elite, SW 629 and Ruger GP100), although I see no need for the HK 45 and the SIGP220. IMO all your lists contain wepons that duplicate each other in some capacity, so if I was going from scratch I would modify your lists to:

  1. .22 LR - Ruger Mk II
  2. 9mm - Glock 19 Gen2
  3. .45 ACP - SIG P220 DAK
  4. .357 mag - Smith & Wesson Model 686, 4-inch barrel
  5. .44 mag - Smith & Wesson Model 629, 6.5-inch barrel
Number 1, no pistol collection is complete without at least one .22LR. For number 2, if I had to pick one, multi-purpose 9mm it would be the Glock as a great combination of size, capacity and features. For number 3 I like the dark finish over stainless in a SD gun, and the DAK is closer in operation to the Glock. For number 4 I when with the S&W 686, although honestly I would not mind the GP100. Finally, for number 5 I went with the S&W 629 simply because I think the Ruger SRH is one of the ugliest guns ever made. :p

None of the groups appeal to me, nor would they fill my needs.

-S&W M41 .22
-Ruger KLCR w/ CT laser grip for CCW
-Glock 17L
-Ruger SRH Alaskan in .480 for bear & brontosaurus defense
-Freedom Arms M83 w/Trijicon RMR for hunting, .480 Ruger
