Some people doing as well weigh charges to a 1/10th grain spread; that's several powder kernels, balls or flakes.

Yep, firearms can be "picky" like that. Some combinations can be "right on" and not give as good of results as combinations where the powder charge differs by a few tenths of a grain.

Tis my opinion that the greatest spread in accuracy tests for any rifle and cartridge with a given cartridge charge weight changes is caused by how the test was conducted.

Humans are the biggest variable in virtually all tests for accuracy. And the more shots in a test group there are, the better its odds are representing where all shots will go.

David Tubb probably holds, aims and fires a rifle aimed in a smaller area than all others. I've been next to him hearing his calls in long range matches; they're all pretty much inside 3/8 MOA in calm conditions. He can hold a 1/2 MOA area on target with his pulse beat bouncing his aiming point in a semi-figure 8 pattern on target from prone. Very few people can do that; the best typically hold inside 3/4 MOA and get their shots off inside 1/2 MOA. His rifles and ammo are no more accurate that that of 20 to 30 of the other top ranked competitors. And he's probably the best wind doper and corrector on the firing line. He was better when he was younger.

Always has been, always will be.

When I see a test with one group (Sometimes just three shots) for each charge weight and they make decisions based on that I just smile to myself, and sometimes resist telling them one group means nothing, but sometimes not.

But as you say, groups with a larger number of shots fired tell a better tale. :)

Can't argue that, goes back to the "Indian not the arrow".

Interesting you bring up David Tubb, it was from his use of the Prometheus powder measure than got me interested in this project to begin with.

I also have no illusions that I have or could develop his abilities but was thinking more along the lines of an unlimited "rail gun" style bench rest rifle that takes things like hold, trigger pull and breathing out of the equation but that will be a different thread.
