Is anybody going to San Antone?
What were your starting off HD guns? When you were out of highschool or maybe in college what guns were protecting home and hearth? My very first handgun was a Ruger superblackhawk in .44 Mag 7.5 inch barrel, loaded it with specials, and I also had an H&R Topper 12GA. Had a stock sleeve with rio buck in it (cheapest buckshot one could buy at the time).

My first firearm of any sort was a Mossberg 500 12 gauge. Hunting was the goal, but it was up to the task as a defensive arm as well, especially with the 18.5-inch cylinder barrel.

My first firearm purchased specifically for defense was a Smith & Wesson 4013. I was married with kids by that point.

The .357 trooper my Dad gave me when I was 15, after he bought his Pythons. I bought an 870 when I turned 18, I had use of Dad's spare 1100 before that.

The first center fire handgun I bought was a used S&W M39 in the early 70s. Not long after I became an acolyte of Colonel Cooper, which meant nothing would do except a Colt 1911, so I gave the Smith to my Dad. After he died, my brother got the gun and has it to this day. Still looks great.

I started collecting guns (milsurps) when I was still in high school, but we (my family and I) never felt the need to protect the house with a gun. The guns simply were not for that purpose. We lived in a very safe neighborhood near the University of Texas in Austin.

The first gun I purchased was a Ruger P89. I could have afforded a "better" gun, but it was reliable, would feed and fire anything in 9mm, and had a good trigger, which I came to find out was uncommon in that model. I eventually sold it and the "high capacity magazines" during the AWB for more than I had in them.

Same, exactly....
Im not confident with handguns but very confident with long guns, to this day ill chose a rifle or shotgun over a handgun, and that 12ga (if i still owned it) would be a contender.

I still lived at home with my mom and two brothers (one of whom was a drug abuser) when I started shooting. My mom didn't want any of my guns loaded in the house. My third gun was my first handgun, and I did sometimes load it at night when I was home. It was a Taurus Model 66, loaded with .38 Special ammo. That was back in 1987, and I was sworn in as a LEO later that year. Once that happened, her objections to my having my gun loaded, as long as it was within my control, faded. The Taurus and my issued sidearm, a S&W M67, were first-up for defense duty, my only long guns at the time being a Ruger 10/22 and a single-shot 20 gauge shotgun.

I married and moved out in 1989, and those two revolvers carried on with me.

My first home defense gun was a Beretta Model 84, that while it certainly wasn't the Po' Boy Special, it definitely seemed well suited for the job at hand.

After I traded the Beretta in on another handgun a S&W Model 10 with a 4" barrel, along with a 3 D cell Maglite flashlight, served as my primary home defense gun for many years.

Ruger Mark 1 with a 4" barrel. My parents got it for me when I was (gasp) fourteen and after I got back from Basic my mom let me keep it in my room. Up til then, she kept it in the firesafe in her bedroom unless I was going shooting with it. I kept that gun for 14-15 years until it got stolen when one of my cars was.

A shotgun maybe a 12 guage semi-auto or one of my 16 gauge SXS bird guns.

I really didn’t have a house gun till 93 we’d been married 14 years when I bought a KGP-141, CC wasn’t law back then.

Myself: HD wasn't a concern when I started as all were used for recreation. Today, I have various types/calibers concealed throughout the house.

Wife: Purchased before I met her, a FEG Mark 2 .380. Sill have it. Excellent condition.

Enfield No. 5 that had been hacked up by Bubba. Bought it at age 19 to use as a cheap hunting rifle, it was my only centerfire at the time so it did double duty as a self defense weapon. IRRC, I paid $70 for it in 1981.

In my early twenties, I received a hand-me-down Colt SAA in .357, it was my only handgun for some time.

I grew up in a house full of guns, but didn't start buying until I was in my mid twenties, as cash was hard to come by for me at that time. Now I'm a bit better off and can afford the occasional toy.

My first home defense tool was a single shot 16ga shotgun a friend gave to me since my mother and I lived alone, and I grew up in a not so great neighborhood. I don't even remember the make, but it was fun to shoot. Stupidly, I traded it away for some nonsense when I was about 19. Many have come and gone since then.

First time i kept a loaded gun at hand was several years ago during a major remodel of our house. For weeks at a time plastic sheeting was all that stood between us n them. So i started keeping the sp101 .357 in the night stand.
My wife was transfered to North Carolina for a couple years (i was to follow but never did. She returned when they closed that location... its a whole story, lol). They were acquiring another company and tensions were high. She recieved a death threat over the phone and so i gave her an old .22 revolver to keep at her apartment. There was never an actual problem but i certainly made us both feel a little better.

Age 14 - 18, primary defensive arms were a DAO Enfield .38, a .22 Mag Single Six, and a New England Firearms 20 ga singleshot. I still have the Enfield as a reserve HD gun, my brother has the Ruger as it was originally his, and my Dad (just turned 82) has the NEF for his primary HD longgun to this day.

My first gun was a basic 870 pump.
I got it before the second Obama election as I was concerned that if he lost the loons on the far left would riot and if he won the nuts near us on the far right would go nuts. Thankfully nothing happened, but researching what to get I learned a lot. Having a friend who is an NRA instructor also helped.
