Pockets apparently were larger "back in the day"

Indeed this vintage Heiser "pocket" holster is very much like one that came with a Colt Model 1908 Pocket Hammerless my brother bought some 15 years ago.

It has factory nickel plating along with factory pearl grips with Colt medallions on them.
It's the "crown jewel" of his pocket pistol collection.

Couple of Colt Mustang Pocketlite 380's shown, I use to have one. Length 5.6 / Height 3.9 / 13.7 oz
Kahr PM9 Length 5.4 / Height 4.0 / 15.9 oz
They are basically the same size, the Kahr being 2 oz heavier but 6 rounds 9mm instead of 380.

My current pair of pocket pistols. The Colt 1903 is a .32 ACP from 1928, and the other pistol is a Savage 1907 from around 1911, also in .32 ACP. It's really interesting to see the workmanship on these little automatics, they're filled with machined steel parts. They both still function just fine, I do shoot them occasionally every summer. I'd even consider carrying the Colt from time to time, as the flat, rounded profile would be a lot easier to live with than the block, squared-off edges of most modern autopistols.

I'm mildly on the lookout for a Remington 51, a Colt 1908 Vest Pocket, an FN 1910, a Walther PP, a SIG P-230 in .32 ACP and a Mauser HSc to add to the collection at some point. Money and opportunity will decide what gets added and when. On the modern-side the Glock 42 and Kel-Tec P-32 are on the list, as I have experience with both of them and feel they are good representatives of their classes.

Looks like pockets come in all sizes; Here are a couple of Captain Kangaroo-sized pocket pistols I have; top one is a 5-shot .38 Spl.Taurus, don't know the model number, bottom is a M66-1

Taurus looks like an 85, which is J-frame sized. Put a two finger boot grip on it, and it slides right into many pockets. Trim the hammer spur, and it draws nicely out of those same pockets.

The 66 snub, yeah I got one of those. Iffin' I was 6' 9" tall instead of 5' 9" tall, I bet I'd have some pants with pockets large enough for a 66 snub. ;)

Bulldog .44 will fit in the front pocket, not a short and flip flops gun but it’s light and not large at all. A 2” barrel would make it a dream in the front pocket. Thu have the Boimer but I need a front sight.

Colt Agent, S&W 640 Centennial, S&W 638, Ruger LCP and Kahr CM9. The hardest one to pocket carry is the 640 at 21 oz. The rest are all lighter than 17 oz. Kahr is smaller than all except for the LCP.

Pocket guns for fun.

The Charter Arms is a J-frame sized gun with part of the barrel in the frame window, thanks to .22 LR being shorter than .38 Special.

Very nice, agreed on the Bearcats. I've been eyeing those for a while. I think I'd prefer a Bearcat in .22 LR over a Single Six, if given the choice.

I really like that bearcat, I am gonna put that on my want list.

Some posts "cheated (non pocket guns) unless they have really big pockets!:)

Almost everyone forgets that when guns like the Colt Pocket Hammerless (1903) were being made most men wore full suits in public. The pockets they were referring to were side pockets on suit jackets not trouser pockets. Vest Pockets (Mousers) were for watch pockets or a ladies handbag. Clothing styles back then made concealing a pistol easier for men than it is now. Women in those days had no option other than a handbag. Pants pocket would be last option for most back then just like it is for me now.

Here is a Beretta 418 that I recently picked up at a LGS. tempImageSfEKOE.png

Just out of curiosity, what actually constitutes a pocket pistol?
2” barrel or less?
Or whatever conceals in your pocket?
It's an elusive definition. But I don't think it's meant to include "any gun I can fit in a pocket." I can fit a S&W Shield or Sig 365 in many pockets. But, they aren't usually considered true "pocket pistols." My understanding is that today, a pocket pistol is more like a Ruger LCP, Beretta Tomcat, S&W Bodyguard, and all of the old school variants of similar size. That's why I said my 642 isn't really a true pocket pistol, although it can fit (barely) in many pockets.

I suppose that's why pocket pistols are smaller now.

I think a parallel is how much easier it is to pocket carry with a winter coat and the large pockets in many, probably more like the coat pockets of yesteryear.
