I would have answered, with flashlight and hand gun. However I have security lights all the way around the house.

Even though I wear a sidearm all my waking hours, I just figure that I'd rather have a long gun (even a rimfire, which was what was handy) if I have even an inkling that there might be a real problem to deal with. That way at the very least I have a backup gun.

Our house is about 30 years old and doesn't have the best lighting either inside or out. I've been thinking about installing 4 to 6 floodlights all on a single wire and switch. Just another one of about ten thousand things to do and spend money on. A couple strategically placed motion lights might help though ...

Unless I look out the window and see who is there. I absolutely answer with one...

I am often carrying a .32 around the house concealed....

Sometimes the .380 or the 9mm though.

Strange Poll.

It asks if you either "Do" or "Don't: as far as answering the door with a gun.

Never was the option "On Occassion" presented: like when it's past 10:00 PM and your door is being "pounded" by someone who sounds impatient - or whatever.

I certainly don't see the need to get so uptight about it - like every time - as some of the posters on this thread seem to be.

You need an option for "I dont open the door at all unless they called ahead" Or, "I don't even get up to look"

House Rules

There is a standing rule at my house that family members identify themselves upon entering, This is due to our location which is way off the beaten track. Anyone who fails to do so will have a variety of different calibers pointed their way.

My daughter lives a few hundred yds.from my house. One day, she asked a visiting boyfriend to walk down to get some items she needed for baking some holiday goodies. He knew I carried & my daughter cautioned him to knock & identify himself before going in. Still, he went brain-dead & just walked in, no knock, no id. When he passed through the foyer, the first thing he saw was me with a 1911 aimed at his head. It's amazing how many colors his face turned in such a short time. He got what he came for & left in a hurry. My daughter called a few minutes later, wanting to know what had happened, because her friend was sitting on the sofa shaking like a leaf. They wound up breaking off their relationship about a month later. That was fine withme; I didn't care much for him.:)

Inside my house, it depends on where a family member is as to what an intruder would face. When I leave the house I carry either a 1911 or a S&W model 21 in a custom inside-the-waist holster I made myself.

Both my better half and myself answer the door with our weapons. And depending on the time of night the Mossberg 590 may or may not be within reach as well.

Been answering the door with a gun after dark for over 30 years, and always with a gun now for the last 7 years. I've read way too many home invasion stories not too.

True story: about 28 years ago the door bell rang at 03:00 suspicious I grabbed the Ruger Black hawk. At the door was 3 drug types, a panel van in the drive and a 4th in the vehicle. Thumb on hammer N finger at the ready I turn on the outside lights and open the door enough to get a better look making sure they could see the 7 1/2 barrel of the .45 at my side.
Nervously they stare at the gun and then at me, and studder, "D D D you know ......." me "no never heard of them" wake me up at that time in the morning when I have to get up at 05:00 and I promise I will not be pleasant, or condoling.
Long story short no I did not know them or the person they wanted, never heard of them, did not know where they live (well duh) and told them to beat it, this was the pre 911 emergency line days and when you live out in the country you are on your own.

The .45 at my side was what decided the day, although they were stoned they were not stupid enough to try and be rude and make demands, and left when told to.

Well I answer the door with my fire arm (since if I am dressed I have it on) but more importantly I have an early warning device in the form of a wireless motion detector mounted on my front porch, placed in such a way you can't see it until it's got you and if it's got you I know you are there. Gives me an extra 6 to 10 seconds to check the outdoor camera. If you are supposed to be there you are welcome, if you are not, then I have plenty of holes in the back yard that need filling.

Just kidding about the holes in the yard but you will know you are not welcome if you are not.

I have answered the door armed a few times, but generally I don't.

One time my wife should have let me answer the door with a gun, but didn't, and I was glad for it in the end (sort of): we saw some sketchy-looking guy hiding behind a car in the neighborhood. I called 911 and they were VERY interested in what the guy looked like, when we saw him, where he was going, etc. Normally calling 911 didn't produce many results, so their response was surprising.

Shortly thereafter we get a knock on the door and my wife just answers it like nothing special going on. As she opens the door, I'm thinking "noooooo... you idiot..."

At the door are four, rather large police officers who were looking for this guy. Given their heightened state of alert and agitation, I can imagine they wouldn't have been too pleased had I shown up with gun in hand.

Afterward, we discussed whether she should have just opened the door and she admitted that she hadn't even thought about it at the time. :banghead: She thought it was the neighbor who we just spoke with a few minutes earlier. We agreed to be more thoughtful about opening the door in the future....

9 times out of en i have been carrying that day and don't take the ccw off until i go to bed, so by answering the door and carryig then yes i do anwr the door with a gun on me, other than that unless it s dark i don't grab a gun prior to answering the door. i don't have may friends and the ones i do don't know where i live, and i don't socilize with the folks in my neighborhod so they have no reason to come around especially in the middle of the night if someone is comming over they know to call first.

Two years ago, before I bought my house, I lived in an apartment complex. One day, we had a note posted on our door form the management saying that there were home invaders in the area who were posing as selling magazines. They would produce a gun and rob the occupants who answered the door. The note went on to say that two apartments in our complex had been robbed. This was unusual, because this was an upscale place.

Three days later, there is a knock at the door, and I went to answer it, armed as always, and there are two males there, one on each side of the door. They stood far enough apart so that looking at one, the other was out of your sight. The one who was speaking was a thin white male in his 20's, unshaven, and wearing a sports coat, but it was so wrinkled, it looked like he kept it in his glove box. The second was a black male, thin in his 20's. Behind them in the parking lot was a female sitting in a car with the engine running.

The one trying to sell me magazines kept waving his hands alot, and holding papers in my face. I got the impression he was distracting me. I looked at the second male, who was reaching in the front of his pants. My alarms went off, and I backed in to the apartment to gain some distance, while drawing my weapon. The two males ran as the door closed, and I don't even know if they saw my draw or not.

I called the police. The trio was never located. I don't know if they were the robbers or not, and I guess I never will know.

I will usually grab the largest cooking knife of the magnetic rack right near the door. I dont have any pistols(can't...) and thus don't CCW so any long guns are currently being properly stored in lockable containers...

About three years ago, we had some guys stop by with Russian accents selling books. "Your neighbors informed us that you have a child, how old is he?"

Talk about condition orange. The alarm claxons were absolutely RAGING.

I was LIVID. But in retrospect, I think the guy was just fishing. I don't think any of my neighbors would tell some stranger whether there are kids living in my home or not. We reported the instance. And when the guy showed back up in the neighborhood going door to door, (I realize this might sound crazy) a neighbor and I hopped in the car followed him around until he left the neighborhood. I don't know if that was crazy of me, or just being a good citizen. But man, some stranger asking about children in the house really flipped me the #$%& out.

Rather then having to keep a gun on me- I keep a shotgun behind the door, and behind the couch. And in the bedroom. And in the panic closet with extra ammo and a phone.

My wife and I have a code- (discussed many times here) that lets her know when to get to the panic closet and call 911. worst case she goes to the bathroom if she can't get to the closet, I keep a stash in there as well. Plan your disaster!!!!!

well guys I confess I didn't read all the way through this but if I am repeating another post then I apologize. We don't want to scare common visitors nor do we want to look paranoid when we answer our door.

What I always do is grab my gun and a newspaper both in the same hand with the newspaper under the thumb. When I answer I have a gun in hand ready to address any evil. Should it be a friend then I invite the in and lay the gun with paper down so they don't see it.

I don't have to draw and if someone tries to push his way in all he will see is a newspaper in my hand just before he goes down
