Poll: How much ammo is too much?

I don't think you can have too much. I like to keep a couple thousand rounds for each gun I have. I just need more storage space.

KB:Im sure you'll get really far in a vehicle in that situation.

In what situation? I didn't say anything about a situation. I've got a Chevy 1-ton with a jib crane, and 800# ain't that much weight.

Jest braggin' up my truck, bud. Common among rednecks. Not for everybody -I gotta work 3 hours of overtime to fill up both tanks. But when you want to move something big and heavy, ahhhh, there's nothin' like it.

1000 rounds per caliber you shoot. Except .45, 9mm, .223, and 7.62x39. Those should be 2,000. 10,000 of .22.

At least that is what I keep on hand!

I want to have no less than a five year supply. Since, for example, I shoot 5K rounds of 9mm a year, I should ideally have 25K rounds set aside.

I don't actually HAVE that much, but it's a goal. :)

200 rounds per big game hunting caliber -- that's a lifetime of hunting per caliber
1k per hand gun caliber -- keep empty's for reloading
for .22 -- wow that's tough, I can't seem to figure that one out, its a big number!

AND reloading stuff -- you can mold bullits and find brass, even make powder, but how many primers do you have? That component worries me more then the rest.

How about 2 guns per caliber? forget spare parts and have multiple working guns.

Irish proverb, "may you live forever and the last words you hear be mine."

you know you have to much ammo, when 1) you have to build a seperate rebar reinforced bunker to store it in, 2) the local gun stores come to you when they are out, and 3) uncle sam has you listed as an emergency ammo supply depot for the u.s. and n.a.t.o. armed forces! :D :what:

I can't really say how much is too much. I shoot 2500rds per month at least. That is spread between 9mm, .40, .223 and 12ga. I'd love to have a years worth in reserve, but that is a lot of money and space. Even if I had that much, it would still need to be replenished at the rate of 2500 rds per month, so.... I should be able to finish out my life with 1,200,000 rds or so. In that case, I guess that 2,000,000 rounds would be too much.:neener:

Question. Has anyone ever encountered a city or county code regarding the amount of ammo one can have in their habitat.
For Fire reasons only.

I'll answer with a question

How much fun is enough? How much money is enough? How much love is enough?

Their ain't no such thing as too much money, fun or love or ammo, IMHO.

Oh man, well, I think im going to call up winchester and just pay them about 100,000$ for a continuous supply of ammo, No screw that, im just going to build my own factory

Minmal: 1,000 rounds per gun. Not per caliber, per gun. IE: 2 AR's that run 223? Then 2,000 is the minimum. With a few odd caliber exceptions like my 444 Marlin.

Optimal: Figure my average annual useage and times it by 5.

Too much

TOO MUCH, no such thing. At last count I had about 13,000 + rounds of various types of ammo. I can't have too much around. A trip to the range will burn up at least 300 - 1000 rounds just for me on a short day. An all day trip with guest will take 1000 - 3000 rounds. Most will be 22 caliber. 100 - 200 in 7.62x54r, 500 in 7.62x39, 200 in 9x18, 200 - 300 in .45 etc,,, it adds up quick.

ONny time you have too much ammo is when you're trying to load 9 rounds of .45ACP into an 8 round Wilson, or 31 rounds of 5.56 into a 30 round magazine.....old age, eyesight and forgetfulness when counting leads to "too much ammo".

For me it is enough to have 2000 rounds for each caliber - 9mm to .45ACP. 5000 should be enough of .22 for the one gun I have in that caliber. I rarely shoot .223, so 1000 for that. 500 of 12ga as well.

The only people I know that have a large stockpile of ammo are survivalists and folks that visit gun forums.
