Purchase Denied

I was at a gun show once buying a new Ruger M77 compact .243, and got denied, my paperwork was correct and I am also a CCW holder, over the years I have purchased at least 20 handguns and half as many long guns, boy was I steamed :fire: . The gun dealer said it happens all the time, he said when there are high volumes of call traffic, the ones that dont make the server come back as denied. He said he would try again in an hour if I wanted to hang out at the show, I did, then finally my name was called on the intercom. I was approved and left with my rifle.

I'm surprised that the FFL didn't call back to and give your SSN. This happened to my brother once. He was denied and the FFL reviewed the 4473 with him and he found out that the SSN that was given was one number wrong. The FFL called back nearly immediately and he ended up with a "proceed".

Do any of you really think that giving your ssn on that form is going to mess up your privacy or security? Get real. You have a better chance of having your credit card number ripped when you pay for the piece. If you want the gun then, with less problems, give them the ssn.

To me less is better. If the information on the form says "optional", then I don't provide it. And have never had a problem with firearm purchases.

The FFL questioned the denial and asked if I could give my SS# at that time. He was told that they couldn't do it. He suggested voiding the sale and re-submitting. Once again he was told no. I asked what would happen if I decided to buy another gun and submit paperwork. He said he didn't know if it would be denied or not because of the recent denial.

Also, he told me that when the store inspection is done every couple of years, that the denial forms are looked over.

The best I can do is to submit info and fingerprints and hope to get the personal identification number that I can use from now on.

So now the wait is on...I was told that it could take a loooooong time. We shall see.:(

Yep, that was my understanding too ... no "mulligans". Once you get denied you stay denied until you fix it.

they used to use my SSN as my DL# here
although they did change that, it's still more than a tad late for me to worry about it

I use my DL and CCW Permit (with my fingerprint on CCW card, 'cause you don't get one without that) at LGS,and they always copy both, and if anybody thinks those two in combination will keep their SSN a big secret, they are living in the wrong century

I put my SSN on my tax returns too, and as cold and cruel as Uncle Sam too often is, he ain't no A.I. cyborg encrypted boxen, "he" is a whole lot of people you will never meet who can look at your stuff anytime they are so inclined, legal or not

post it (SSN or DL) on my mailbox in neon, no, but if you want to buy a gun or get a tax return, "just do it"

I don't like recording my SSN on 4473's. I know that the data base can identify you more easily with the number. So, why not give it to the dealer on a separate piece of paper and let him key it in for the NICs check but not have it recorded on the actual form?

Here's my advice, take it for what it is worth. Go through the process to get yourself a UPIN. It'll go in that line next the SS# that everyone always asks the dealer what it is. After that, fill out your paperwork and always use the UPIN. No need for the optional SS# to be put on the paperwork. Your background check info with be retained under the UPIN and solve any future mix ups.

Because that would be a violation of FBI NICS procedure and result in the dealer losing his access to NICS.
The dealer can only call in the exact information that the customer writes on the 4473.

I have a really good friend who has the exact three same names, and the same birthday (year and day) as a rapist in Michigan or someplace. When he found out years ago it was a really big hassle to get a pistol permit and almost got him locked up. Now still every time he buys a gun he gets delayed at least three days, still after all these years.

Didn't know that.

I read the first few posts then replied.

If you really want the gun now. Have your wife, father, brother, sister, friend buy it. Then buy it from them. They bought it and a week later didn't like it anymore so you took it off their hands for them. Happens all the time. Just saying! ;)

That would be a straw purchase and is illegal.

Moreover, the dealer isn't that stupid. ATF compliance inspectors look at all denied 4473's and the ultimate disposition of the firearm. Finding out it went to the OP's wife or sister would very likely cost the dealer his license.
