Range wear - why?

As others have said, we all have every right to wear whatever we feel like to the range. If one dresses like Rambo normally, there's no point in putting on a golf outfit to go shoot. However, when I see someone all decked out in military duds shooting paper at the range, it does strike me more as "dressing up in a costume" than the practical, functional, duds they would be under other circumstances.
As for me? I wear whatever I'd wear otherwise. At work, I wear old jeans, boots, and usually a rather worn shirt. (I'm a dentist, but no clotheshorse.) That's what I wear to the range, although if it's warm out, I change into a sleeveless T shirt. I don't play golf, and I'd HATE to dress up like some of those guys do...

I met up with a co-worker at the outdoor range and he bring his "big boned" friend wearing camo pants, white sneakers and Under Armor shirt. My co-worker was wearing a dress shirt, jeans and cowboy boots. Hillarious.

I just wear what I would wear working in the garage or something.

I like to wear a speedo every chance I get. It goes well with my girlfriend's bikini that she wears to the range with me. She only comes there so she can watch my brass...... I'm a reloader, ya know.

Just to clarify my fashion critique/rant post.

Wear whatever you want, but in society we tend to assume based on looks. I'm not as worried on a shooting range, but stopping for gas and other side trips before and after it is nice to be somewhat presentable. Just like if I was working around the farm and had to grab something from the store,

Sure people will understand if you look a little messy, but I just try to keep a neat appearance whenever I can.

Anyways back to your regularly scheduled thread, still in progress.....

I was going to ask if it was OK to wear my camo thong! :D

My 12 year old likes to get fully dressed in camo but I have a rule in my house- only one piece of camo clothing unless you are hunting or on a mission (not the LDS kind). :)

I wear camo stuff all the time but typically just pants or shorts. BDU's are great for winter outdoor activity.

Too many wierdos at the firelines these days shooting tons of rediculous foreign jobs with bullpup stocks. I am not even going to comment on their gun handling techniques let alone dress and apparel. Tis why I belong to a private club.... Good Luck!

oh sure MarshallDodge, burn THAT into our brains. LOL.

I just wear what I normally wear. Jeans and a tee shirt, and sometimes a hat.

I will generally wear jeans, boots, button shirt. I only wear camo when I'm hunting...so none of mine looks mil-type...its more grass and river cane. We're waterfowlers.

I'm even planning to wear a orange vest for trips to the targets. I want others to see me down there.

In my case, it's Wranglers- indigo 13MWZ or black Shadow Canyon- and riding boots, Stetson/Resistol/Atwood hat. I may or may not be wearing a realtree hardwoods shirt and/or safety orange goose down vest. If I'm not wearing a camo shirt, it'll be one of my Wrangler shirts of the Gold Buckle or Painted Desert lines.

In any case, I may be shooting a levergun or a M1 Garand.

Does anyone here think I'd be wrong for my hat to be a four-peak Montana crease, possibly in OD green? I don't think so because as a cowboy's hat, it pre-dates the U.S. M1911 campaign hat.

I know people who I've never seen at a range and whom I have never seen with a firearm of any description or whom I have never even seen riding around in a highway that leads through the woods at some point-whom I have never seen wearing anything but camoflage.

Some of these guys seem to spend the majority of their leisure time at one or another beer joint. Wonder if there is a barfly forum where some barfly is wondering why some of the other barflies wear camoflage while getting drunk all of the time?

I've got some gear that I don't take to the range simply because I don't want the hassle of being stereotyped by people who don't know me from Adam.

I'm much more impressed with your safe and responsible handling of firearms than I am with how in style, out of style, different, or unique your dress may be.

Yeah, what he said! What about those people who dress up all... COWBOY style? Whazzup widat? I mean, seriously. And they actually are having FUN, while dressed up all goofy-like... while playing with guns. Grown ups.
Can you believe it? ;)

If it makes ya feel good and it doesn't hurt anyone else, my own take is, go for it. Even if it draws a chuckle from others.

As Sgt Hulka said, "Lighten up Francis" :D

Or not.

I'm convinced that the Camo Clan are the hardcore SHTF types who are just getting ready for the end of the world. When the grid goes down, you'll wish you had practice shooting targets in a Ghillie Suit too.

Why does anyone do what they do?
Because folks have Rights, and Folks are gonna do what they are going to do.

Range: Don't ask me the last time I went to a Public Range, much less shot at one.
Camo: Don't own any. Never have, never seen a need for it, and the few times I was given a gift of camo, I declined, exchanged, or gave away.

I am a born and bred Southern Boy, I drink my coffee black, my tea unsweet, prefer wood and blue guns, spoil dawgs, rather assist kids and ladies than guys in shooting, and I have no problem if a lady wants to change her own oil, and I am inside cooking something up...
If a lady wants to clean my gun, and I choose to take the laundry out of the washer, hang her delicates to air dry...

Screw the stereotypes , I am ME, I gotta Right to be me, and I am centered enough to know who and what I am , doing whatever I am doing.

I also have a tendency to give off perceptions as to how I want to be perceived, and for ME, being a regular fella that makes it real difficult to figure out me, is best.

Guns? What Guns?
I only thought Police and Military could have guns , much less shoot guns.

Invited to learn how to shoot: I thought one had to have a license to do that.

Shotguns? Are you nuts! Them things kick like a mule on steroids, and why would anyone want to shoot something that kicks!

Invited to go hunt? Why? They have drive thru fast food, joints, pretty girls in diners that serve you food.

But ya'll can sweeten your tea and wear camo at the Public places if'n you want - that is your right. :D

Oh we gals don't dress like this for you guys going out honky-tonkin' , we dress like this to show off and piss off the other ladies anon lady

It does not bother me...

I do not advertise anything, other than what I want to advertise.

Some folks are targeted as having guns and all around here, by wearing camo, knives clipped to pockets, vests, logo range gear, vehicle sticker, fake bullet holes...

Some BGs visit ranges and case the crowd.
Some BGs case folks out and about, like at the bank, or anywhere in public, including Ganders, Bass Pro, Academy Sports...
Hunting season hits and casing the parking lots of diners, gas stations and other stops folks make.

Oh yeah, folks get robbed at gun point in the driveway, or that small rest area, or whatever.
Advertised themselves real well.

Wee hour breakfast, still some traveling time to hunting spot, car pulls over to take a bathroom break - robbed at gunpoint.

Heck one old boy so proud of logo gear, sticker, camo, and all not only got himself popped coming home from the range, they were in the home when he arrived, his stuff packed up and out, just waiting for him to arrive to get the last bit he had.

Turned right around with insurance money, and they hit him again.
He advertised himself.

I know a little bit about "advertising one's self" and not only Firearm Related stuff, other Genre' where folks get robbed, hurt, kidnapped and all.

I know as I have not been kidnapped - yet.
I've come real damn close though...

Ha! You can't see me!

I wear camouflage patterns so as not to give away my position at the range.

All the other guys stand up where the benches are.

Ha!

They shoot a lot in my direction, but they can't see me at this end of the range.

I have it all to myself.

Camo rocks.

I wear exactly what I would wear around town, which is usually jeans and a T-shirt.
If a guy wears camo around town, he will probably shoot with camo at the range. Some people use camo as a fashion: it happens right here in London, in Camden. Of course those people don't go to the range at all ;)
However I have to say that I would find it odd that a guy doesn't wear camo around town but wears it while at the range.
But that's just my opinion...

I've formerly worn BDUs or DCUs to work everyday. Having done so I've found it to be quite comfortable, and utilitarian. When shooting from a prone position the reinforced elbows and knees are nice - they resist wear. Long sleeves of appropriate weight material worn with proper undregarments can keep one cool and prevent sunburn in warmer months, or keep one warm in colder months. The long sleeves also help reduce places for bugs to bite you. The boonie hat keeps the sun out of your face, and off your neck. The pockets are nice for keeping up with foam ear plugs, boxed ammo, spare mags, spent brass, etc.

Sure, you can get all that utility in solid colors, but hey camo is inexpensive and plentiful on the surplus market if you weren't in a job were it was issued to you. Camo is also poular amongst hunters - may as well practice in what you plan to hunt in so you'll know where to keep your gear in/on the clothing, and can make changes before you head to the field if gun/gear/clothing catch on each other, rub against you the wrong way, etc.

I don't personally wear camo to the range, but I see the practicality for those who choose to.

I wear what i usually wear daily... Woodland camo BDU pants and the shirt varies... might be camo. might be black. might be bright yellow with the FOX racing logo on the front, who cares?

Why camo? if it goes with the weapon, why not?

outdoor range is where i usually go... it fits.

I like to wear my blue colored circus clown outfit. Complete with white and green camo pattern face paint and pink spiral painted tie. On saturdays, I wear my off olive green circus clown outfit. Unless its the 3rd saturday, then I wear red and white polka-dot clown uniform w/orange shoes.

Everybody looks at me, but not one person says anything!

Yet.

Bikinis

I had been assisting some good looking ladies on shotgunning, and they wanted to attend a serious shotgun shoot I was attending, to learn about competition.

HOT, Humid, Southern Day.
They showed up in short short cuff offs, and flimsy tank tops.

Not my fault some guys get distracted easy and miss targets...

I play for keeps and got into the REAL Serious shooting part.

Off come the short short cuff offs and flimsy tank tops.
Bright Neon itty bitty bikinis...

Not my fault some folks lose focus and miss targets...
Granted some others were walking into parked cars, posts, benches, each other...

Shooting is 90% Mental and 10 % Physical.

Not my fault some lost Mental Game...
All I was seeing was the leading most edge of clays, one at a time...

I havn't gone shooting in such a long time I don't know what I wear...lol

Thanks Arctic Assault. It seems that I finally found the forums I have been looking for. I've been part of AR15.com as a member for a year or so. The only problem is most members are cops and military. I have really no problem with either, but they are single minded most of the time. I don't like people who post arguments over rank, battlion, status, and the like when it comes to guns.

What really needs to be argued is gun rights and civil liberties!

Surplus pants have always made good knock arounds. Cheap and hard wearing, you can take pair of old BDU pants and they'll out last a pair of jeans for knock around wear any day of the week.

You can get 90w motor oil on them when you're working on the truck, you can wipe your hands on them to clean the CLP you spill off them, and you don't mind coming home filthy from the range when it's dusty or muddy. If they don't clean up well enough in the laundry, you toss them or turn them into a cleaning rag and pay $5 for the next pair.

I'm partial to British DPM's or the $9 digital pants 5.11 blew out a year or so ago. Very comfy and they go great with Hawaiian shirts. :D
