Range wear - why?

I sweated my butt off in BDUs/DCUs for 20 years because Uncle Sam told me to -- I wear shorts and an old tee shirt to the range now or maybe jeans and sweatshirt if it's chilly. As far what anybody else wears -- to each their own. Maybe I should sell my old BDUs at the range? Not sure many of the cammo dudes at the range wear medium regular, though.

I always wear full camo, a boony hat, combat boots, and my Ru Paul 08 pin everywhere I go. It's the only way to make sure that no one thinks I'm a member of the UN, the CIA, Homeland Security, the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, or part of the worldwide Jewish conspiracy.

The problem isn't the camo, it's the person wearing the camo.

Just like it isn't the gun, it's the person holding the gun.

Although I find it takes a certain type of person to wear too much camo. The fake ex-seals/ranger/recon/air command types, and the "lets kill all the a-rabs and get it over with" types, both of whom I find really annoying. Not all of them are that way however, and it really is unfair to judge them all because of the guy rambling on about his days as a seal, and who then cannot even manage to make it on paper was wearing all camo.

Funny about the Seal deal. I know one man whom I later heard had become a SEAL. He was a blackbelt at the Bujinkan Atlanta Dojo back in the late 80's. Junior or senior in high school then. Graduated from Annapolis. A couple of years later, I heard he completed BUDS successfully.

He was a little guy, kinda goofy acting. wore black plastic glasses. The goofy acting was a put on just to get you to underestimate him. He looked kinda like Mad Magazine's Alfred E. Neuman. I heard he really embarassed a good many people doing OPFOR during his training.

I've seen him once since then. He still walks around grinning and blinking owlishly. Heh. To hear him talk with people who aren't close to him, you'd never know he is a high level black belt, a naval officer, and a SEAL. He doesn't act tough or manly. He acts like a geeky wimp.

The same guys that wear full camo to the range are the same guys that wear full camo on any and every trip to the "deer lease" even in the off season. Why, I don't have a clue, but my brother and I get a kick out of watching them gear up like they are going into combat.

It's threads like this that make me wish Al Gore had never invented the internet.

It's their personal preference.

I have a pair of desert digital 5.11 pants that I'll sometimes wear to the range and will often wear into the woods or something because they were tough and cheap- in fact, I hate the pattern, but for like $9 I'm not complaining. I have other milsurp clothes too for the same purpose. And, I don't see the problem with wearing a pair of BDU pants (woodland) and a black sweatshirt or T-shirt around if I so desire.

Y'know, it hardly matters what folks wear to the range. It's as much a personal choice as what they're shooting.

Would we be critical for someone that is shooting an AK on the range or an M1A? Why rip the folks that show up with milsurp wear any more than milsurp-type guns?

This morning I had to work around the "farm" and put in a fence post. BDUs and T-sirt and boots. This afternoon it's Aloha shirt and shorts and Crocs. I could be shooting wearing either getup. It all depends in what I was doing before I decided to go shooting and what was comfortable. Considering my orange Aloha shirt, bright blue T-shirt, grey cargo shorts and lime green Crocs I'd guess folks would prefer to see me shooting in cammys.

Are we concerned how we'll look to antis or non shooters? If we're at the range it is unlikely that we'll encounter those folks so who are we to offend?

when I go to the range, I wear clothes.

And we're all very grateful :neener:

Seriously...who cares? I saw a lady there one day in her full cowboy shooting regalia, buckskin jacket, long skirt, etc. She stuck out like a sore thumb, but who gives a rip? If she was happy (and I can't imagine how she was, it was 90 degrees out there that day) then who am I to fuss?

For the record, I wear jeans or (in hot weather) capris and a tee shirt. Never anything that the brass can fall down, though.

I know lots of people who wear camo all weekend no matter where they go. Why, I'm not sure, but a lot of those people are deer hunters so maybe they associate those clothes with leisure time.

Dunno, but I don't see it very often here. Maybe I just go at the wrong times, but usually what I see is people wearing the same thing they'd wear anywhere else except maybe an NRA hat or two, and the range officers standing around shooting either the breeze or whatever gun one of them brought that day.

Myself, I have to wear special clothes all week, last thing I'm gonna do is wear special clothes when I'm having fun.

here's the only camo I wear

actually I do have some BDU pants I bought for playing paintball, but usually I don't wear them for much else. They don't fit me quite right.

some people have been posting that they wear camo pants, or BDU pants or whatever, at the range and around town. That makes sense. most of the time these days people regard camo as fashion. But the guys who wear full camo, with a tactical black facepaint, well, they look pretty dumb. basically if you dress up like this kid, you look pretty dumb.

I have shot a couple rounds of trap in a Tux. I drive a limo sometimes, and I was on the way back from a wedding. The limo attracted more comment than the tux.

I do recommend folks wear their hunting togs sometimes to the range to see how things fit together.

The shotguns I use for clays have 15" LOPs. The one I shoot geese with while wearing a 4 in 1 parka while sitting in a layout blind has a 13 1/2" LOP.

Catch my drift?....

Hunting clothes

I will wear my hunting clothes when I am working w/ a rifle that I am going to be using on an up-coming trip. Feel how tight the fit may be when holding up a rifle for a shot for more that a few seconds. Even kneeling, sitting or prone may have a little different comfort or discomfort with or with out suspenders or w/ a heavy jacket and the rifle not feeling tight on the shoulder.

Just a normal trip to the range, jeans and shirt. No cammies

Sam.... god, my eyes.

I neglected to remember that, and remind my wife of it, the first time I took her to the pistol range. She was not pleased.

Every time we get ready to go somewhere my wife often sarcastically says "You're wearing that?" I often get tongue lashings when I leave for work that my tie doesn't match my shirt or some damn thing! BUT she's never commented on what I wear to the range! Hmmmm. After enjoying the hell out of this thread, I think I'll get myself one of those "Rambo" outfits. Or if it gets into the 90s next week, maybe I'll show up at the range in a jock strap and a pair of thongs (I think the gals call them flip-flops today). :D:D:D

I generally wear my camo wet suit and full scuba gear when going to the range. Dressed such, I can practice my stealthy approach and engagement from the creek of my sworn enemies, those pesky crows and their assault beaks. They are reaping death and destruction on my garde... er,... tactical food supply. ;)

I have many friends who are in the military or who are contracted by the military, and they wear BDUs or ACUs all the time. One thing I have noticed is that they seem to always be comfortable in them.

When I go shoot, I wear what I usually wear: carpenter pants, a t-shirt, and shoes without holes in them... getting gravel in your shoes is no fun.

The only camo item that I own is an ACU-pattern boonie hat. I'll tell you why I like it -- it breathes, keeping the sweat from pouring down my face and neck, it keeps the sun out of my eyes, and keeps my neck from getting sunburned. It's very comfortable.

To be honest, if cammies are as comfortable as they look, then it's only a matter of time before I try them.

I hafta say, though, I haven't ever seen anybody at the range wearing tight jeans ant a poncho made from a tarp. That's what Rambo looks like, after all.
