Rare rifles

I thought you were ! That johnson of yours looks good enough I double my first guess to $4000 . The others are accurate. The .284 pre 64 Model 88 is a bit low too, there were not alot made pre 64 and they were quite popular in their day and for good reason as they were very accurate for a lever gun because of the one piece stock , and very smooth quick shuck with a decent trigger. The .257 Featherweight does command more value than some other calibers . The .375 H&H pre 64 is allways desirable and it took me 40 years to find a sweet one that I could afford.

Photobucket has currently lost all my photos, and I have a few "rare" rifles I'd show :(
Looking back I can see my usage of the term "rare" was an oversight. Wow. Some very fine rifles here.

I guess the rarest long gun I have at present is a Wehrmannsgewehr, but since it just looks like a refinished G98 the photos don't impress.

My chassis CZ527 chassis gun is probably one of a kind. The base gun and all the parts are currently available, so anyone could put another together if they wanted.

My two Martini projects are also one-offs. Not so much rare as idiosyncratic.

Remington's Model-720 was one of the finest and most beautifully finished bolt action rifles of all time, but was made only during the early 1940's. Very few of them made it to dealer's racks because of WWII and the military buying existing inventories. Later, the remaining few were awarded in military rifle competitions, as was this one... Holy Smoke ! I didn't even know these controlled round pre Walker rifles existed ! I thought it went from Remington Express Enfields to 721 ! Wow they look slick !

Have always loved the Wehrmannsgewehr story.. Do you reload for that??

Yeah, that's pretty much a requirement. I don't think custom ammo guys make 8.15x46R due to all of the possible bullet diameters -- mine's a fairly common .319" but I understand the older German single shots can range anywhere from about .316-325".

My specific rifle was a vet bring back with a duffel cut. In late 2017 it had been sitting on the used shelf at a local shop for more than a year, so when I finally asked about it they quoted $300 even. When I picked it up, they threw in a set of reloading dies, 15 RWS cases and 92 sized cast bullets for another $20. Other than repairing the duffel cut, the rifle was ready to go with a minty bore, though I'm pretty sure the bolt was a later replacement as it should have had a straight handle. I bought another 20 RWS cases from Huntingtons and made fifty more from 30-30 brass. I used IMR 4227 for my initial handloads and it worked so well that I haven't tried anything else since. Seems happy with bullets in the 165-180 grain neighborhood -- I order these from Montana Bullet Works.

Reformed 30-30 and RWS rounds, with a .308 Win for comparison

For fun I also made up some scaled down Wehrsport targets for 25 yard practice.

Capable of much tighter groups, but the tiny notch on the Lange Visier sight is a challenge!

Nice side by side photo.. Well looked in one years ago and know Buffalo arms made the rounds for them.. But they were pricey.. Beautiful rifle. Any clue when yours was made??? And does it have a serial number can you tell the range?? Also are the parts as numbered as a WW 1 rifle??

And I know I am being greedy here but I would love to see a photo of the 8.15x56r round compared to a normal 8mm to a 30-06 round.. :)

I will not comment about the price you paid for that rifle.. because you know and I know that was low by 2007 standards let alone 2017.

Thanks. The receiver was thoroughly scrubbed and renumbered (three digit); new proofs are all on the replaced barrel. The Lange Visier was also restamped for Wehrsport distances.

Incidentally, the original wood block in the magazine well was annoying in use -- cartridge rims catch in that space at the front and won't enter the chamber. I have a friend who owns a local art bronze foundry so I was able to make a wax mold of the feed path and have it converted to brass. Feeds much slicker without any permanent alteration.

Well, since you added a smiley ... sorry that the bullet types are potluck -- I usually shoot cast slugs in my sole 7.92x57 rifle.

Many Many Moocho thanks was was like about a 100 times better ride then I was expecting or deserved.. many many thanks...

I like the markings

And Sir, this sentence brought a tear to my eye, no one should have just one 8mm rifle...Its not right... The good lord made so many so all of us can have 10 or 12 min.. :)

But it is a very nice ultralight Husqvarna postwar sporter with an FN Mauser 98 action! If you only have one ...

Wow! If you dont mind my asking what is a real Trapdoor Officers Model worth?

A lot depends on condition. A minty one can run up to around $20-30K last time I looked.
I really have no idea just what mine would bring as it is quite worn and has several non-original replica parts. (Tang sight, Wiping rod, front sight.)
It is still shootable but has no rifling left, so why bother....
BTW, it is an original, (other than the replacement parts already mentioned.)

Tres Cool.. Is the "Pistol" grip a period add on or is it a later add on????? .. I like it none the less..

Wow, I wish I could say that was awesome.. but we are dealing with levels way above awesome... so is that pistol grip easily removable..??

Held on by one screw.
H&R made a fairly good replica of the Officers Model, but as far as I can tell, it didn't have the pistol grip. (One warning about the H&R: the trapdoor latch isn't very good and can come loose. Could ruin you day of shooting.) There is a fix available. I believe it involves replacing it with and original latch. Apparently not too difficult to do.

I have seen the H&R version, it looked nice. Thanks for explaining that.
