Wandering through one of my locals, looking for a new (to me) deer rifle, two model 70's jumped out at me. Rifle one, $799, is a pre 64 M70 in .270 in good shape with a nasty Banner brand optic, nice wood, ancient crusty rubber recoil pad, slind swivels/carrying strap. Rifle 2 is a post '64 M70 featherweight in .270 with QD swivels and a Leupold 3-9x for $699. I'm having some trouble gauging the tradeoffs, and this is what we have teh intertron for, so please jump in and help me thrash this out.
So you don't have to ask, it's for whitetails, probably from a tree stand, probably under 100 yards, and I've got other deer rifles- this is totally about what premium you assign to the pre-64 action- Would you pay $100 more for one, with better wood and iron sights, over a press checkered one with maybe $300 more of optic on it, newish?
They're both consignment guns, so haggling dosen't really come into it.
