Why do you own guns?

I liked this from someone else's, altho I removed hunting.

  • Self-defense
  • Recreation/competition
  • As a bulwark against government abrogation of civil liberties

I have to question the statistics given as xx number of guns per 1,000 residents. Firearms are not registered in the State of New Mexico, any number given as xx / 1,000 is purely an extrapolation of some type as the State does not track gun sales. Where did the numbers come from and how did they verify the accuracy of the statistics?

I agree with you about this. The only thing concerning guns New Mexico has a handle on is the number of concealed carry permits. Considering the abilities of Santa Fe to mishandle and lose information I wouldn't consider that to be accurate either.

I own guns because I like them. I like to shoot them and to improve them if possible. My main hobby.

I got my first firearms at the age of 17 to hunt with. I didn't really acquire any more through high school and college because a 12 and 20 gauge pump and .22 semi-auto covered my hunting needs, and I just didn't have any spare money!

But after started a full time job, I discovered that having a couple guns and having some extra cash, led to more guns appearing. So my reasons for owning guns are:

Hunting
Spontaneous firearm procreation

Really though, this sums it up pretty darned well:

  • Protection
  • Recreation
  • Hunting
  • As a bulwark against government abrogation of civil liberties.

I have always had a keen fascination for any thing mechanical; especially guns. First toy guns were courtesy of Hubley, Marx (Golden Guns), and Mattel (Fanner 50s). From there I moved up to Replica Guns (still too young for the real thing), and a Crossman Marksman BB gun. First revolver was a Charter Arms Undercover; first semi-auto was an Astra Model 600. Guess I just enjoy having guns in general and have always appreciated what they provide me in terms of target shooting, self defense (and home defense), hunting, and collecting.

Being called a Hilbilly, Redneck, Cracker or Honkie has no bearing on which my love affair with guns began and I probably could also be described as a hoarder of them and the ammo I will work hard to create for each one's individual sweet tooth.
As I am a member of the over the hill club and I have woken up to a new days I have my friend's on myself and strategically located in my home.
I liked guns and had only shot a single shot, 14.and 20gauge shotgun prior to my first firearm purchase.
I have tired to remember for sure the first year Wal Mart put a new store in Corinth, Ms. 74 I believe it was and they mailed out sale papers and low and behold one was on sale and I counted all of my savings.
There was a Marlin Glenfield model 60 22 for $36.36 and I had almost $37.50.
I begged Mama, and Daddy both to carry me

Well I like precision machines and I like them for doing precision tasks. Couple that with I like explosions, raw power and such. Firearms fill that void and they are useful tools for self defense survival. So what's not to like about them? Then there is we need to do it so that the future generations can be taught it is good and sound to do so.

If they are getting their data from registered guns then its all screwed up. Arizona does not have gun registration of any kind. If Arizona is not up there in the top much less ahead of DC then the methodology is truly messed up.

The whole thing contains a high level of bogosity. What and how was the question asked for the first part. I definitely doubt such things.

It's pig's I want to hunt hogs at night suppressed in Ms. On private land it's 7x24x365 open to use any means available to hunt them. I think they own me due to the fact that they make me clean them and lazy by nature must be exercised as if they were dog's. If you don't take them they just act like a Cigar Store Indian View attachment 235669

I do not carry so that I may impose MY will on others.
I carry because I WILL NOT allow others to impose THEIR will on me.

Also, Hunt, punch paper and steel, shoot clays and enjoy handloading to much.

Not to mention the 2nd gives me the right to do so.

I would say something snarky like...why not...but I won't.

2A...says we can. when I have '***** that say that isn't enough you need to be taught. okay...started shooting at my dad's side at 5 with a .22 and worked up from there to when I was in the army shooting 105's and then 120's.

regardless...its fun. its my hobby. and its a bit of a legacy to hand down to mine after I am gone just like my dad and granddad did for me.

D

If I knew what it is like to be able to acquire a new firearm when I saw it for sale and money wasn't a problem I would tour Gun shop's in my spare time lol.
I would be doing my best to put it in circulation.

Methinks your multi-purpose, all-in-one tool cart/reloading bench/gun storage rack is at max capacity! You might want to add another work bench area for some of your equipment.

Some old guys--Jefferson, Madison, Tench Coxe--all told me to :)

As to the Species of exercise, I advise the Gun. While this gives only moderate exercise to the Body, it gives Boldness, Enterprise, and Independence to the Mind. Thomas Jefferson, 19 August 1785

Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom? Congress shall have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American ... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the People." Tench Coxe, 1788.

I was reading a study that shows all the different reasons that people own guns: https://www.wingtactical.com/blog/needbased-gun-ownership/. I wasn't surprised that "protector" was the highest percentage, but I was surprised that "collector" was the second lowest, at only 8%. And "hunter" was only 11%, which is super low to me, but maybe that's because where I live, the close school for the first day of deer season.

Anyway, why do YOU own guns?

Because I am free to do so. :)

I haven't figured it out yet. I guess because I don't play golf, bowl or fish that much anymore.

It's purely a recreational pursuit. Haven't shot anyone yet so it can't be real high on the list of reasons.

Why do I own guns?

1) Fun.
2) Hunting.
3) Self/home defense.
4) I like them.
5) Defense against tyranny.
6) Competition.
7) Job requirement.
8) Target shooting.
9) Because I always have.
10) Because it's the American thing to do!

:)

Honestly, I suppose this is a perfectly sensible question for a non-gun owner to ask the gun owning public. But, in truth, I never really give this much thought. I have had a lot of guns over the years, and shot many more. But, I don't really give much thought to owning them, or the fact that others don't.

Exactly! I've always had guns. My parents had guns, my granddad had guns, everyone I knew growing up had guns. I know that some people don't have guns, but so what? I have a good table saw, as well as quite an assortment of other woodworking equipment because I enjoy woodworking. I know that a lot of other people don't. But asking those people why they don't have woodworking equipment is as absurd as asking me why I have guns. The anti-gun bigots are never going understand anyway. I won't waste my time explaining it to them because all they want is an argument. There's some kind of saying about "wrestling with a pig."

Growing up in the late 50's, early 60's and watching all the cowboy and westerns on TV, I couldn't wait to get my own lever rifle, and wheel gun! My father bought me my first gun when I turned 14, a Winchester 94 .30-30 which I still have.
I started shooting when I was about 12, and joined a .22 rifle club that had a range in the local elementary school.
Guns have turned into a life long fun, safe hobby for me, and both my wife and self use them for personal protection!

I put great stock in my life. I also spend a lot of time around wild animals. So.............

Self Defense and Defense of Loved Ones
Recreational Shooting
Bit of Preper Mentality/Ability to Hunt
Historical Relevance and Collecting fun
Tinkering Needs Fullfilled

I always thought they were neat. I collect stamps too but they are not as much fun to play with.
I can think of a great way to integrate those two hobbies. It may degrade the value of your stamps a bit though.
