Today i bought a new marlin models 60, had to retire my old one as it had been shot out. I want a scope to go on my new one, something fixed at a lower power 2x would be ideal. I really like the profile of the nc star pistol scope. (this onehttp://www.ncstar.com/store/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=102 )

Can anyone recommend a good scope? Would the scope I have the link to work even though its a pistol scope?

EDIT: This rifle is mainly for plinking and squirrel hunting in the woods. thought about putting a red dot on it. Anyone have any experience with the less expensive (not aimpoint / eotech) red dots?

If you want a fixed power scope for your rimfire that is inexpensive, just look at the Bushnell line, but the Bushnell 3-9x rimfire woulds just fine at under $50. It doesn't get much cheaper than that.

You want a scope with a full 1" diameter tube. Not a small diameter scope such as people used to mount on rimfires and air guns.

Also check out the Weaver rimfire line. They have a 4x fixed power. They also have a 2.5-7x that is nice and compact for rimfires which I have on one of my rifles. Excellent scope.

I don't exactly see your thinking about a red dot scope for a 22. I assume you are thinking that it would be good for fast shots? Runinng game shots perhaps? A bit of practice will give you that comfort level with a low weight variable or 4x scope. I used to shoot rabbits on the jump with a 4x rimfire scoped rifle.

Try a 1" tube 3x9x32 scope in the tall see-through rings. That's how mine is and I can use the sights for close up work. I can also see the .22 bullet holes in a target at 100 yards with that scope. With a 2.5x7, I can see what I want to hit but not the actual hole I made. Being able to clearly see your groups makes adjustments very easy.

Ndh87: You actually wore out a Marlin 60? Amazing....

Thanks for the replies, is there anyone who makes a fixed 2x rifle scope? Would a pistol scope work if i mounted it as a standard scope or would eye relief be a problem?

The Weaver 2.5-7x gives you the option of using it at the lowest power setting. You'll like it, but it will cost you around $200.

The eye relief would be a problem on a rifle unless you mounted it further up on the barrel which would require drilling and tapping for scope mounts.

If you truly want a 2x, go with a red dot. There may be some shotgun scopes that are in the 2 or 3x area. But you will get used to a regular scope rather quickly and you'll be able to see your game more clearly and shoot more precisely. Isn't that the objective?

you can get el paso made, all steel, weaver fixed 3 or 4 x scopes, I have several if interested. Also, for new, there is an excellent scope that is tailor made for rimfires, but can take the recoil of a 338 Lapua mag; it is called the Tasco Golden Antler series, it is a 3x9 power scope, it comes with bases and rings, and it is rated for BREAK BBL, SPRING PISTON RIFLES!!!!! Did you get that??? and it is 50 bucks or less, but here is the best part, the objective bell is only 32mm, which means it is not a huge scope to put on a rimfire, and it has an adjustable objective, that's right, an AO, down to 7 yards!!!!! Most scopes with all this capability, and this small, is going to cost you over 100 bucks, all day.

Tasco has been making this scope for about 10 years, but they only make in small batches, and they are usually very tough to find.

My wife has a BSA Sweet 22 2-7X on her Mossberg, and really likes the range compensating elevation feature. In fact, I liked it enough to get a Sweet 243 scope for my Handi-Rifle...

This rifle is mainly for plinking and squirrel hunting in the woods.

That's the key. Do NOT put a red dot on it. In my opinion, the dot covers too much for a precision rifle like a rimfire, and doesn't offer the magnification you will sometimes want and need.**

For a hunter or plinker .22, I like a good 1-4, 1.5-4, 1.5-5, or fixed 4x. Possibly a 2-7. Look for an objective lens size in the 24-32mm range.

What's the budget? If fairly high, the Trijicon 1.25-4x24mm is very very hard to beat. On a budget, a Weaver Classic K rimfire 4x28 follows the KISS principle nicely. But again, what's the budget here? I could have other recommendations...

**Dot sights come into their own really on only two types of guns: A CQB fighting rifle, like a semi-auto, intermediate round rifle used for short range combat. And the other is a big bore, short range hunting rifle, like a muzzleloader, .45-70, .44 mag, .444 marlin, etc., where you don't need the utmost precision to make the hit you need.

I want to know how you "shoot out" a model 60?

Me, too.

rangerruck ,... Seems like their everwhere...<:))

Lots of solid advice following your original post, but i'm surprised no one's pointed out that NCStar is widely considered so much junk. I'd stay away, and look at some of the others recommended here.
I just stumbled into a stupid-good deal on a Weaver 2.5-7x32 classic V7 for $40 NIB !!! (long story), and as chance would have it, it's also for a Marlin 60 that i still ain't even got around to buying yet !!

I agree with post #15. Get a Nikon Pro-Staff. I have 2 4 powers, one 2x7 and a 3x9. They are still marked for $100 bucks at my WM for the 4 power.

The 4x is set for a 50 yard paralax, the 2x7 is set for 75 yards and the 3x9 for 100 yards. They have much longer eye relief than any Bushnell or Tasco in the 30-40 dollar range.

You only have to buy once if you buy a decent scope. Twice if you don't. I will say 22s are easy on scopes though. I mounted a Cabelas Pine Ridge 4x on a 45-70. It lasted 15 shots and was all over the paper. I think they are made by Tasco.

The optics snobs must all be out buying fireworks or something. I can't believe nobody has yet berated the OP for considering anything less than Zeiss. :p

I think Im going to go with the 4x. I guess I'll get used to the slightly higher power. I just like the look of a fixed power scope.

I used to always mount fixed 4x scopes on my 22's. It was only when I started shooting more paper and less cottontails and squirrels that I switched to the 2-7 and 3-9x rimfire scopes. The 4x is just gives you a great look on a 22 rifle and you will learn quickly to be very fast with it if you rifle fits you well (stock).

Hey, CRITGIT, what's ya got against the BSA? I got a pistol scope on a Ruger Mk2 I bought not long ago and it's decent. I'm not real sure it'd hold up on a heavy kicking caliber, but it works on a .22. I've been getting input from both sides on BSA scopes. They're certainly cheap, which makes me nervous, LOL, but I bet they'd be fine on a .22.

The one scope I'll never buy again is Simmons. I've been real impressed with the newer Bushnells, optical quality has greatly improved from their cheaper scopes of 20 years ago in the one's I've tried. I have one on my .22 mag, a 3x9. You don't need a Leupold on a .22, but get something better than those little 3/4" or 7/8" or what ever they are 10 dollar .22 scopes. That stuff is junk.

I had that model 60 for at least 10 years, my first rifle. i cant even begin to count how many rounds i put through it. got to the point where after the first 10 or so shots rounds just went everywhere. Also I would have to pull the trigger a few times before it actually fired.

NO< NO NO, sgt knuckles, that is not the same scope, this is the one I am talking about.
look closely at the enlarged pic, and also read the description on it.
again, in brief, it is a 3x9x32, with both a AO down to 7 yards, and it is rated
for Adult, spring piston, break bbl rifles. that is outstanding.

Looka that difference in pics between my scope, and your scope pic.
Also, when you physically pick up this scope, it is heavy duty, it feels about twice as heavy as a scope this size, very solid parts and build.

Oh yeah, if it says BSA, then run away!!!!
only optics worse are anything at all by NC star, which is not worth using as a doorstop.
