Remington 870s after the sell off.

There are plenty of old 870s out there and I would take one of them over a new one every day of the week. I have owned and worked on old ones and new ones. The new ones are not up to snuff.

And actually the Roundhill Group does not own the Remington brand, Vista Outdoors does along with all the ammunition buisness. For the Roundhill Group to use the Remington brand they will have to come to an agreement with Roundhill or call them ?????? 870.

They get free use of the Remington name on firearms, part of the deal.

The 870 is the 1911A1 of shotguns.

Somebody somewhere is going to make them and as with the 1911s quality will vary greatly with the manufacturer. I don't see them disappearing from the new gun marketplace though it may take a bit for someone to decide to go for it then tool up.

Used ones aint showing up on the gunshop racks.
And I heard the pricing has gone silly.

Shame, I'd like an older Express youth 20 or a Special Field (the latter already silly priced).

I've had well over a dozen 870s.
Magnums, Police models, Express, Wingmasters, Special Purpose, and Special Fields.
Only have one right now, and it's been my only 870 for the last decade.

Its a cheapo Express Supermag w J lock. Yup the rib aint perfect. But its not horrible.
Its been top gun at F&W dove hunts, and put some turkeys in the freezer too (23" bbl).
Its been a champ.

Have no idea when it was made. But it aint from the glory days LOL.

Had a pair of Wingmaster Magnums, bought in early 90's. Both Remchoke, a deer model and a vent rib.
Minty. Nice wood on em too.
Too nice.
I went Special Purpose and sold em.
Have had no probs w Express models, or Sportsman (the pre Express cheapies).
A clean older Express youth 20 w a swap to full size synth stock set would be my "poor man's Special Field".

Well I see that Remington Defense still has thier web-sight up. So there might be some hope.

Last time I checked they only sell to L.E. and Military. And now their parts supply chain is cut off.

The 870 is the most successful shotgun (likely single model firearm too)

11 million built. There are over 10 million model 500 mossbergs. 100 million AK. I like the 870. But as far a newer guns go I wouldn't give a premium over a 500 unless I wanted to use a pistol grip. (For hunting i prefer the Mossberg safety and slide release. For a pistol grip they are not as good) But I totally agree that they will be picked back up. If not there are clones out there.

My 1970's vintage 12 Gauge Remington Wingmater is my most prized shotgun. It has been matched against others that were 50 times or more expensive guns in both field & competition & it has never failed to do anything the others did and more. If I could only find affordable 12 gauge shotshells...

I work in manufacturing equipment maintenance. The running joke would be "which March first"

Good point! But the main point is that they paid for their FFL and paid a buttload of the money for the IP, so if the lawyers and bean counters have any say in it I reckon they're be looking for return on that investment ASAP. And it's not like they're putting a man on Mars- the 870 has existed for 70 years. And I think Roundhill actually has the Remington tooling, too. It's not like they're reinventing the wheel.

Are you throwing the 700s in your blanket condemnation?

Remington has had some serious Quailty issues recently. I wouldn’t touch a 700 manufactured since 2012ish. The last newer 700 I handled was a SPS model a guy bought cheap at Wallyworld and brought me to rebarrel and when I pulled the bolt out first thing you could see was the bolt lugs weren’t cut square. Scary stuff. I still like the older ones though.

I can’t count on fingers and toes the Rem made Marlin 336’s brought to me jammed up with rounds still in them after the first shot.

I’m a Mossberg/Ithaca guy because I do not like the 870’s riveted ejector. I’ve replaced a few of those and that’s not a cheap date.

Not like those plastic Mossberg safetys, huh ?
I am a retired gunsmith. IMO the 870 and the BPS are the two finest pump guns ever made. The BPS is heavier and doesn't feel as good in the hands to most people, but is a great gun.
The all machined parts crowd will get all misty eyed over a Model 12 or a 37, but neither are more reliable or longer lasting and are much harder and more expensive to work on when they do need work.
I did once receive a 700 for a customer with a couple of issues; one of which was ill machined lugs. Sent it back on their nickel and when we got it back ( < 3 weeks) it was as slick as a Rigby - well very nearly.

I will agree with you a model 12 is a pain for breakdown. I like BPS’s but they just seem like they are one frame too large for their gauge to me, fine running shotguns though. The Mossberg safety’s are quick and cheap to replace with a steel one if the plastic does break.

Now I won’t say I absolutely hate 870’s, I started shooting trap with one, still use it sometimes to this day. But the new ones are just crude compared to even 20 years ago.

I have no love of the Model 12 and pretty much have an allergy to Mossberg 500 or 835.
Did like my BPS Upland Special 20 ga (non engraved).
Not as nice as my 870 Special Field, but close.

Have neither now, but will buy one of em again should they pop up reasonable.

Yes, my 870 Express Supermag aint perfect (rib has a little wow to it, but slight).
It also has the J lock.
And its been top gun (23" turkey model) in the dove field a few times.
It runs. Its synth. I don't care about it. And it runs (and still looks new dangit).

I dunno what yr my 1100 SP was made. The orig bbl was cosmetically damaged so I dumped it and got a reg blued bbl.
Receiver was also spotted so I gunkoted it. Its a duck gun so who cares.

The 1100 Trap I think was '77..........can dig it out and check.
Was gifted to my dad who gave it to me (he a lefty- never shot it).

Cheap Remingtons fit me and I do well with them.
Have tried some more expensive rigs........that didn't work as well.
Got no problem dropping critters w my cheap ol Remingtons.

I doubt you will see 870s or 1100s coming back anytime soon. If they are smart, Roundhill will bring back the V3/Versamax line as those were selling well and one of their successful hunting rifle models. But without a dealer network, engineering staff, sales staff, suppliers, employees and a somewhat dysfunctional website, I do not hold much hope for this to go well.
