Hi i was at dicks sporting goods today and saw a remmington 770 for $300 bucks. i was wondering if its any good or not? it comes with a bushnell scope and factory boresighted, but they boresight it before you take it home. is it anygood?

Bottom of the barrel Remington that is known for it's bolt sticking closed and the scope is the cheapest Bushnell you can get(made in China). The price you saw is about average.

No. It's a crudely made steaming pile of junk, an embarrassment to the Remington name.

For the same money you can get a Marlin XL or XS 7, which is a vastly superior rifle in every way.

I agree with the idea of getting a marlin XL or XS7. If I was in the market for a budget bolt gun right now, thats the one that would get my nod over the Savage Axis, Stevens 2000, or Rem 770

My cousins boy brought his 770 over a year or so ago and asked me to swap stocks for him as the original the sling mounts were broken off. I looked it over and sort of scolded the young man for not taking care of nor cleaning it. So before I swapped the stock I set about cleaning it. As I was pushing the brush from the breech it got "loose" about an inch and a half from the end then tightened up again before exiting the barrel. So we looked down the barrel and you could clearly see that there was a bulge in it. I then wiped the outside down and used venier calipers it measure the barrel. Right off the top of my head I think there was a about 0.022 bulge in it. Either way he could not ever remember shooting it with anything in the barrel. So to make a long story short he contacted Remington and the ended up sending him a new complete rifle. Good service for a crappy rifle.

Wouldn't touch one.

You can get a Savage for little more. Even the cheapies from Mossberg and Marlin (new bolt rifle) might be worth a look. Although the Marlin is probably made in the same factory now.

Howa 1500 is about 10 times better too.

Not a good buy when you can get a Weatherby Vanguard at my local gs for a penny under $300.00. If you compare the Howa-based Weatherby with the Model 770 from Remington you will see why the Vanguard is a good deal and/or the Model 770 (even with the blister-package genre scope) is a bad deal for $300.00.

I have handled both the 770 and xs7. The xs7 has a much higher quality feel to it and has a VERY nice trigger which is fully adjustable. I had planned to buy one in 7-08 for deer hunting next season but ended up trading for an m77 mkii instead. I would definitely recommend the marlin over the remington.

Go search on youtube there is a video of a 770 with a blown up barrel. Consensus is they are absolute trash.

I have shot the Remington 770 and i can tell you it is a complete piece of junk. I have also shot the Marlin XS 7 and it's a far better gun. Good accuracy and overall a pretty nice rifle for the small price tag.

I know a guy who has one and has hated it since the first time he shot it. Now he just uses it as his loaner because he did the right thing- saved more pennies and bought a 700.

I know three people that sold them after the first season. my cousins broke at the plastic receiver mounts. The words I would use to describe them are not of a "high road".. so I will not!

While I have no personal experience with this model Remington, I am good friends with a good gunsmith that has been in business more than 30 years. His opinion is that this Remington has no redeeming qualities. Those were not his exact words, but a direct quote would make the Highroad people unhappy.

If you can find one with the spelling that you posted, buy it, should go up money wise with collectors

Why someone wants to spend his hard earned cash on a Remington 770 when there are the much better similarly priced Savages, the excellent Howa 1500 with their beautiful "cousins" Weatherby Vanguards really baffles me....

Just curious but how many who posted negative opinions about the Remington 770 actually own/have owned one?

Well not too many I hope, hopefully they learned from some other poor soul who had one. dude the receiver is in a plastic shroud, and it mounts to the stock in plastic! not sure about you but they couldn't be too great! and everyone I know that has had one for any amount of time had nothing but problems, and the people that didn't keep them couldn't sell 'em for more than 100-150 bucks. which means no one else wanted it either. I've never owned one. shot several, hunted with several guys who had them, and I've cleaned and worked on them. several I knew had bolts that would hang up. wouldn't fully open and wouldn't close. they were just junk!

Never owned one and never shot with one....all I did need was holding it in my hands, trust me it was sufficient.....very flimsy, cheapo feel....even the little Remington 597 rimfire feel more solid......if they shoot right they could be a good idea if Weatherby Vanguards, Remington 700SPS or ADL, Howa 1500 or Savage would cost much more....because you can have them for $100 or so more, it makes the 770 actually pricey for what it is....in my opinion.
