This is the first review I've ever done for a firearm, so I'm going to try my best. I have no idea as to how I ought to do it.
__________
I bought this gun on Saturday, October 8 in a private sale at The Nation's Gun Show for $520. It was the result of research done by me, and input from a thread by fellow THR members.
At first glance, this gun looks pretty tactical and futuristic. It's all made up of polymer, it's got gentle lines, rails are available, and of course, it's done in that inexplicably threatening black like an AR. It's lightweight, smooth, and in my experience, it seems to fit naturally in my grasp. They are available in 29 inch and 32 inch configurations. I got the latter. You can increase the length of the stock by adding on recoil buffers and spacers. The gun isn't very tall; it's not even 10 vertical inches high from bottom of the stock to the summit of the front sight post.
The controls are great for one trained on the AR-15. For one who was brought up on the AK, as well as battle rifles, the controls are a bit of a pain. Fortunately, its light weight mean that even short college otaku like myself can manage to reload with our fore hand and leave the other on the grip. The design is fully reversible and can be used equally well from the left and right sides, so trigger hand reloads are still an easily possibility.
The sights are one area of this gun I don't really like. My issue is that they are aperture sights. This would work well on a weapon I intend to use at at least 150M, but for potential 4m engagement distances, they are not a good thing to have. My issue is that the holes are rather small. There are two setting for the aperture sights. The first one is intended for short range and is this one is fittingly labeled SR. The second one is intended for longer range shooting and is labeled LR. However, even the short range sight has a hole too small for my taste. Fortunately, the rear aperture sight and be folded down so that it resembles the rear sight of a Sig 550. This is my favorite configuration. The front sight is a post and it is fully adjustable for elevation and windage. It can be folded down too. All the sights are fully adjustable. The gun is optic friendly. There is a standard picatinny rail between the sight posts.
The trigger is my absolutely favorite feature. The pull is neither too light nor too hard. As always, Beretta does a great trigger job. I find that I can tell when the trigger is about to break and fire a round.
The Cx4 has its own magazines and does not accept other Beretta mags by itself. However, adaptor sleeves are available for various Beretta pistol magazines. Beretta does not sell very big magazines. The mag capacity I get with my 45 ACP model is 8 rounds +1 in the chamber.
Accuracy is good. I managed to get a 4 in dia group at 50 meters on my first mag. This gun is exactly what a carbine should be: an intermediate between a pistol and an intermediate caliber rifle.
How is reliability? I haven't had a single issue and I've shot bullets of 6 brands through it. Nothing gives this gun issues. I haven't even needed to clear a stovepipe yet.
The greatest thing about this gun is that it's flat out fun. I have only had a couple of shooting sessions with it, but I am thinking of keeping this gun for the rest of my life and making it a family heirloom. The gun goes up to my shoulder, my eyes align with the sights, and I naturally point at whatever I want to hit. I have no doubt that with frequent practice, I could win competitions with this gun. I have no idea as to why the poor sap sold me this gun in the first place. I think he wanted enough cash to get a custom AR.
As for handling, I think it's just about perfect. I still have to keep on refraining from trying to wrestle it around like an SVT and instead I only have to suggest to it where to go and it follows my body. My friends joke that I'm finally using a gun appropriate for someone like me. The only think it needs now is some anime decals and AK style open sights and I will call it perfect. I can't think of a better gun for HD either.
What else is there to say asides from: THIS! IS! AWESOME!
