One more ...

Work schedule will keep me from going over everything carefully for a few days, but hope to get some range time this weekend. But on first look, fit and finish seem very good.

Self rolled. 200 grain Hi-Tek coated Missouri Cowboy #5s over 5.5 grains of Red Dot. Hope to chrony and accuracy test this weekend.

Got to the range today. Really like the GP! But ... the front sight has to go. I really don't like the fiber optic; would much prefer a plain black target sight.

I put about 25 rounds of Winchester 240 grain cowboy loads through it, and 25 of my hand loads. Unfortunately, I couldn't get my chronograph working so no velocities to report. I'm guessing the cowboy loads would have been in the area of 700 fps. My 200 grain hand loads were clearly zippier ... maybe 850? Both were very comfortable. And the hand loads were more accurate. Here's one of the target of the hand loads shot at 15 yards, single-action, supporting my forearms on the table:

Wasn't very happy with my 25-yard shooting, and think the problem was that I couldn't get a clear sight picture with the fiber optic sight. At 15 yards, I was actually able to shoot tighter groups with my Bulldog, which has standard sights.

All the loads cut the paper cleanly, and I was very pleased with the outing. But I will be looking for a different front sight.

So far mine has shot some stuff okay and others not so okay. What it really likes is 180gr and 200gr XTP bullets with a pretty stout charge of Unique.

I need to try Universal since it is similar but meters better.

I have found W-231 and Accurate #5 to be very good powders for 44 SPL. With jacketed or lead bullets.

I shot a variety of different types and weights of ammo through the GP yesterday. I also shot the same ammo through a 4in 629. I used mostly handloads but also shot a couple rounds of factory ranging from 180-255 grains.

The 629 shot just about everything a bit better. Some ammo shot well in both guns while some did not.

The GP really likes 180 and 200 grain XTP bullets loaded with Unique. It doesn't really care for Buffalo Bore's 255gr Keith-style load nor does it really care for Cast Performance 255gr hard cast. I have to wonder if these bullets are maybe a bit too hard to obturate into the rifling the way a softer lead alloy might. I also had a few 245gr plated bullets using Titegroup.

I took a bunch of pics and will post a few up once I get them sorted. Rather than bore everyone with a bunch of photos I'll probably pick a couple examples of best and worst groups from both guns and add them to this thread.

We should also discuss what acceptable accuracy is from a 3in "snubnosed" revolver. Is the GP a target gun and what should we reasonably expect it to do? I doubt I'd have as high an expectation of itty bitty groups if I was working with a similar revolver from another company.

I consider a 5-inch group at 25 yards completely acceptable in a short-barreled defensive revolver. I'm guessing that the GP is capable of better than that with the right loads. The real question is how well I can shoot DA offhand! THAT will be my challenge once I settle on a load!

usbp379, are you getting any leading with any of the bullets? i'm assuming the chamber throat diameters are .432". maybe why those .430" diameter hard-cast bullets aren't doing so well.

I haven't noticed any serious leading. There's just a bit after firing a few rounds but nothing that doesn't come right out with a brush and a few patches.

that speaks volumes about that gun. leading almost always points to something misaligned, or out of spec.

luck,

I have been shooting cast bullets sized .432 since the throats measure .432-433. Bore is 430 and .418 lands and grooves.

Posted by our friend DPris on another forum. Encouraged by this news as I believe the little gun is capable of better accuracy.

Also, my sample has the gap under the front sight. This has been the least of my concerns but I'm still glad to read that it has been corrected.

Just off the phone with Ruger.
The front sight issue has been addressed & should not appear on new production going forward.

The chamber issue is being worked on.
May or may not go with SAMMI specs, but they'll work toward better consistency in picking one throat diameter & sticking with it.

I'm encouraged.
This is a neat little gun & I WANT it to succeed. :)

Also, if the GP you already bought has a problem with chamber-related accuracy, Ruger is aware of the issue & should be able to correct it if you return it for service.

Thanks for this. Mine may go back for service; I'd like to make sure it is to spec (even though it seems to shoot fine thus far). Glad to know they are fixing the sight issue.

i think ruger should leave the throat diameter @ .432". if they bring it down to .430", or lower, there will be issues with the throad diameter being less than the barrel groove diameter which would be bad for accuracy. it's about time sa revolver shooter learn to shoot soft lead bullets at moderate velocities. this should also force bullet manufacturers to start making 44 cal. bullets with .432" diameters.

imo,

murf
