S&T In The Event Of Civil Unrest?

Me and my fiance work in NYC and there really is not much we can do short of take of work... she explained she works in Harlem. I work in Bed-stuy Brooklyn...

Are either of those areas close to or in likely riot zones?

Do either of you have any vacation time coming? Election day would seem to be a good day to take it.

How do you plan to get back to PA during a riot?

Additionally, I am on the 5th floor, so the chances of a confrontation are slim to none. Property damage to my vehicle if they get in the parking garage would probably be the worst situation.
Unless, of course, the goblins set the building on fire.

You might get to skip the confrontation aspect. The conflagration concept isn't any too appealing either.

How's your landing-from-a-fifty-foot-jump skill these days?

It would be extremely difficult to set this building on fire. It's practically all block. Miami has very strict building codes because of the frequency of hurricanes. Not to mention its enormous, more of a complex. Its basically the shape of a rectangle cut down the middle into two squares. One square surrounds a pool (my apt) and is about 75 yds across, the other surrounds a meditation garden. Even the interior walls separating me from my neighbors on the sides and above and below are block.

QUOTE: i've heard there are supposed to be riots if obama doenst win. but ive also heard the same will happen if mccain doesnt win. >>>...

It sounds like that the politically charged crimes are already happening and increasing.

I am taking my family out of the country and we will be watching this from the in-laws in Asia. I don't care what they take from the home, property can be replaced. But people's safety is what matters. I do not want to add to the fire, but for sure this election is much more contentious than before. Friends of many years are on two sides, it feels like a civil war is about to erupt.

"...Lyle Beefelt, chairman of the Prince William Republican Committee, said the neighborhood likely was targeted because it is heavily Republican. But this election also seems more contentious, he said. In the 2004 presidential race, he said, the county's GOP headquarters received one or two complaints a week about yard signs being stolen or defaced. Now, he said, there are about 10 a week. Virginia is one of the battleground states in this presidential race, and hasn't gone Democratic in a presidential race since 1964.

As for politically charged graffiti, he said, "We haven't really experienced this kind of nastiness in Prince William before."

Prince William police said they began receiving complaints shortly before 4 a.m. Local Republican leaders said they had heard that up to 35 homes and businesses had been hit, although police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez said police had received complaints from 13 homeowners and five businesses by mid-afternoon. ..."

Food, water, batteries, extra prescription meds if you need them, stuff for the kids (toys, games, diapers formula).
Comms - cell service may get overloaded, so get some walkie talkies.
Gassed up cars.
A serious evac plan.
A good hose and extra fire extinguisher.
The thousands of rounds of ammo you have might make you feel good, but you aren't going to need much. A gun or two and some ammo will do just fine.
Know your neighbors so you can look out for each other.
Stay out of the downtown areas and off the interstate as much as possible.
Keep a camera handy. You may be able to record stuff that will be useful for insurances adjusters and in prosecuting criminals.

Communication is a big deal. I remember the night that the L.A. riots got going. I was in Santa Ana that night and I had a scanner with me. I could hear L.A. units calling for backup; dispatch reguarly doing 'radio checks' to determine where units were; reports of fires and lots of radio traffic so it was obvious that something big was going on. A scanner will give you early warning of civil unrest.

A short wave radio is also a good idea. You can bet on the local news being censored or having limited coverage. With a short wave radio you can pick up broadcasts from all over the world that can give you a better idea of what's going on.

Short range walkie-talkies or CB's are also good as you want some way to keep in touch with family in the immediate area.

With civil unrest, the police can be overwhelmed within a day as they were in L.A. It can then be two days to a week before troops arrive, so plan on enough food, water and other supplies to last up to a week. If you have large, ground level windows facing a street, get plywood and sandbags to cover it to prevent drive by shootings into the home.

I find it interesting that the 1st of the 3rd is in the U.S. to use to put down civil unrest. Our military has taken several years now to pacify a country that is roughly the size of California--and they still haven't succeeded. What do you think is the chance that our military, stretched as it is, could pacify large areas of unrest in the U.S., along with current duties in Iraq and Afghanistan? IMHO--they couldn't.

That makes it very likely that if troops are called in they are going to come in to put down the unrest and put it down hard. Basically, I'm betting it would be the infantry version of 'shock and awe'. Put the unrest down hard and fast, then quickly return control to the police.

If that is the scenario, you want to lay low and appear to be as harmless as possible. Do everything you can to keep as informed as possible as to what is going on in your area. Hunker down and wait for the storm to blow over.

The military isn't going to come down hard like that. No way. Americans will respond a little more kindly to a military presence than an Islamic insurgency, don't you think? This is not Iraq or Afghanistan. Chill out.

More of the same, food, water and provisions for a few days. Pretty much have all of that at all times. If expecting racial trouble, gang trouble, or the usual living close-to-Detroit type trouble, I typically load extra mags and keep the fast-shooters handier than normal. Fire up the scanner and make sure the camcorder batteries are charged. And stay home more.

And why not? Do you think most of us in SoCal weren't cheering on the former ROK's who had barricaded their stores and shot several looters? Do you think we didn't want the military to have the cojones to do the same thing? As long as they leave the law abiding citizens alone I'd bet the troops could get away with quite a show of force.

This ones on its way south fast. but one point loneviking hits obliquely is that the last thing you want to do is draw government attention to yourself. I would rather hunker down and take my chances W/ the (hypothetical) rioters than turn myself over to the government.

Treo--exactly! You want to seem to be the most innocent, law abiding citizen possible as there is no way you're going to take on the firepower of a Brigade and come out anything but dead. Lay low, be quiet, seem harmless and wait for things to blow over.

so post that info on a web site the govt would NEVER be monitoring???

We have not had wide scale riots since the 60s. The NG back then did not have much training in riot suppression, so did not do all that good of a job. Riot suppression is now a part of that training. Most police departments are better trained as well.

Personally, I think the answer is to announce a shoot to kill order for rioters. And then do it. It won't happen because the rioters are from the same political party as those running the areas likely to have the problems, and in many cases are a big part of their political base of support.

Back in the 60s, a lot of riots were stopped only when a significant number of rioters started showing up dead. I can't imagine who might have shot them, but it had a very calming effect on the other rioters. My guess is a lot of drop guns got tossed into rivers back then, making it real hard to determine just who might have offed the miscreants.

I remember Kent State and that was about it.

When I say don't draw government attention I'm thinking more of a Katrina type situation where people went to government evacuation centers and got their guns taken away, had to abandon pets, had to leave grandma behind and such like. I don't think we will have to evacuate but if we do I'm taking back roads.( I already know which one) I wouldn't, at all costs, go to a government run evacuation center

i don't remember any large scale killing of rioters.
it did not take large numbers for the rioters to get the hint.

as I recall it was under a dozen in chicago. i doubt any were ever solved. random gang killings most likely.

I think we all have backdoor plans.. all we can do for the next week is wait and see.. be as prepared for what you might think is a worst case scenario and keep em peeled.. I am a very short distance from being 'unavailable' in untrackable terrain.. :)

WEll I would be prepared- but I too am leaving the country on election day- not for any fear or anything- its just when the wife and I are leaving for vacation- so I am planning to send my guns over to a friends house who can watch over everything for when I do get back in the country. We did wonder if we are going to have some problem getting back in if SHTF but well see, I think that 6 weeks va-ca means anything crazy would have been cleared up. but then again it could get really ugly here in the south, might not have anything to come back too....

I am still dreaming of the Independant Republic of Alaska... might be heading north ya'll... :D

Seriously though.. I am not a professional but find myself making constant tactical assessments of terrain, supplies, escape routes... not to mention the people around me.. I learned to be paranoid being a motorcyclist in california.. situational awareness is a fundamental tool of survival under those circumstances.. J

One thing I haven't heard ANYONE mention is black garbage bags... Hang them from the inside to keep light from getting out! ;) Don't want anyone to see you are home. If things are bad in your neighborhood, saw some trees down to block the road(s).

Food, Water, Power Source (generator or like), firearms, comms (phone, cell phone, radios), pay attention to the news, VOTE EARLY and PRAY.

I remember all the fuss about Y2K and it amounted to nothing.

If there is civil unrest, it probably wouldn't bother me as I'm in the boonies.

I don't even get TV here (unless I buy cable). I keep up with the news on the internet.

I agree its not likely to get bad on a "Mad Max" level.. and Im not in one of the larger population centers where people tend to riot more.. but..

Good thing I bought that mega roll of black trash bags.. :)
Ya know... is it a 'sign' that while I am sippin my coffee and readin here on these boards.. I just noticed the movie that is on sci-fi... The Stand by Stephen King... writer? or prophet? hmmmm???

Just a few things I don't think were mentioned. Be sure you have at least a 2nd lock on each door. Be sure each window can be locked. Have enough cash on hand that you can get to an out-of-town relative or friend. Keep gas tank over half full. Have at least 2 flashlights that work and an extra set of batteries. Have a non-electric light source (kerosene lantern, candles, etc)scheduled to last for at least a week of use.
Most of these are cheap items that can come in real handy if power is down and normal service disrupted.
Also do you have some basic hand tools: axe, shovel, hatchet, hammer, saw, nails...? These will expand your ability to deal with various situations.
