I have a nickel 6" 586, no dash number, just plain 586. It has been stored in the box it came in for about 10 years. I recently got it out figuring to sell it and found that the trigger sticks back when I manually lower the hammer. It pops back forward with any kind if jarring. It doesn't stick at all when dry firing in either single or double action, just when I manually lower the hammer.
I popped the side plate and blasted it with pressure can gun cleaner, let it dry and then lubed. Figured that would fix it. It didn't. What should I look at next?
Thanks.

Loose strain screw? Tighten the strain screw all the way. Have you replaced any springs? Too light rebound spring can sometimes cause that. Any action work by someone not qualified to do so? Bad trigger jobs can be responsible. Return to S&W for the firing pin/bushing mod if it hasn't been already. The recall is still open as far as I know.

It could still be old grease; I would leave the sideplate on, cock the hammer, then spray cleaner down in front of the hammer and in front of the trigger. Work the trigger and hammer a bit and spray again.

+1

If it ever worked before storage, it should still work.

I'm betting old dried grease inside the rebound slide is binding up the spring.
Or the tiny spring behind the DA hammer fly.

Hose it out several times over with the red tube on a can of WD-40 and keep working the action.
WD-40 will loosen and cut stuff out the gun cleaner spray won't even touch.
Then blow out the WD-40 with an air hose and relube with Rem-Oil or something.

If you decide to take the side-plate off again to do it again?
Be sure to loosen the mainspring strain-screw first before cocking it so you don't bend a hammer or trigger stud.

That could cause the trigger to stick back.

Thanks. I bought the gun brand new, fired it maybe 100 times, cleaned and lubed and put it away. No problems before. 10 years later, the trigger sticks.

I have a no dash 585 and had the factory upgrade. Maybe your hammer nose, i.e. Firing pin is sticking in the bushing.

Send it in for the upgrade. I'm shooting mine in an IDPA classifier thus weekend. A jammed cylinder would be embarrassing, wouldn't it?

Another area that can cause a sticky trigger return is the cylinder stop. The ball can stick in the cylinder notches or the spring can be kinked if the gun is not assembled properly.

This happened to mine. I took the trigger mechanism out. I don't remember the specifics, now, but I seem to recall it required a large screwdriver and the trigger group looked like a mechanical octopus. As intimidating as it looked, there were no springs that shot out, and no parts fell off. C&L'd it well, reassembled with no drama, and the problem was solved.

Mine was almost brand new when it happened, too. Similar round count, plus I must have dry fired it another 100 or so. I found no obvious gunk nor any rust in mine. No lint or foreign obstructions. No obvious burrs or machine marks. I think it was just not lubed well at the factory, maybe. The trigger return on a 586 isn't very strong, to begin with.

If the gun worked ten years ago and doesn't work now, clean the inside. I bet the oils solidified and gummed up the action.

If you can remember what you lubed it with 10 years ago, this seems like a good data point in favor of not using it again.
