S&W M&P9 problems

FWIW: With nothing more than a quick stripping, inspection and cleaning out of the box, my recently purchased compact model has been flawless with 350 rounds of mixed FMJ and hollowpoints fired thus far. It gives up little or nothing in shootability compared to my trusty old Glock 19, while addressing the latter gun's minor shortcomings. In fact, I call it a "better-feeling Glock." ;)

Some notes about the takedown tool: it has a lug on it that fits quite tightly and requires one to rather forcibly push in and twist to seat. After a few hundred withdrawals and insertions I'm not sure how long this will last, but it cannot and has never fallen out while just shooting. It is not just a takedown tool, but actually retains the interchangeable backstraps and is an integral part of the bottom rear of the grip, so it cannot be left out. The little point on the end is designed to flip down a sear deactivation lever, which eliminates the need to pull the trigger to remove the slide for cleaning but does add an extra step to the process. Any similar-shaped tool - or your little fingernail for that matter - can be used for this, or you can just pull the trigger and dispense with this altogether.

IMO your "double-feeding" problems are caused by some fault in the extractor - which is supposed to mechanically/physically pull the case from the chamber - and have nothing to do with "limp-wristing." (BTW, I fired one magazineful out of mine with my left/weak hand and had no malfunctions.) And this business of the takedown tool/backstrap retainer falling out of its own weight suggest some problem with the groove or notch in the frame into which the little lug fits.

Give them another chance, but make it clear - politely - that if not corrected this time they should consider replacing your gun.

I knew S&W had major problems with some agency sales. The NJ State Police tested SW99 duty guns that screwed the pooch big time
Fwiw the NJSP ordered their SW99's custom made with a very odd manual of arms that is worth reading about. As I recall they wanted them to be traditional double action but without a decocker.... Either way its an interesting read if you dig up what they actually ordered.

It is also worth noting that the SW99 is essentially a Walther P99. How much design input or manufacturing input S&W is not really clear to me. One way or the other, the SW99 bears no similarity to the M&P.

Try the FN p-9 you'll like it as much as I do.
Shoots very nice to point of aim out the box.
Comes with three mags. And I havent had a FTF with
500 rounds down the tube so far with out cleaning it.
I love the grouping at 15 yards very nice to handle and light.
Just try one you'll like it. :D

Update

A bunch of my mail was recently stolen/never delivered so I missed the first 2 shipping labels S&W sent me.

However, to their credit they were persistent and they sent me a third label so I just sent my pistol off next day air.

Hopefully my next post will be good news.

I have a 9 and a 40 M&P, neither have given me an ounce of problems and I've got an estimated 6,000 rounds through the pair of them.

It's not a systemic problem. No one I know, including my shooting buddies who have them have had any issues at all.

Sorry to hear you got a bad one.

My pistol has come back from S&W. S&W sent me a UPS shipping label and had my pistol back to me only 6 days after I shipped it back to them.

The barrel was replaced, as well as the takedown tool in the handle. I asked them to install novak night sights for me since I had to ship the pistol back tot the factory anyways and they ended up putting them on for free.

I am honestly suprised with their customer service. A new magazine would have been fine, but top of the line tritium sights is going above and beyond.

The only other problem I have is with one of my magazines...somehow two rounds can get wedged together side by side in the magazine. But that is a small thing. I dont' mind swapping out magazines as long as the pistol itself works, and it does now so I am very happy.

I too, have my M&P9 back from S&W. It took 3 weeks. They changed the extractor and the ejector. So far it is functioning well, but it is so cold out (8 degrees) that I can hardly stand to fire more than one mag at a time.
I may have to wait for spring.

I had the exact same problems with my Kel-Tec P40. It was a small gun with a big kick that I couldnt handle. I sold it to a friend of mine that weighs about 100 pounds more than me and is about 4 inches taller. He has no problems with it. I now own an M&P 40 and an M&P 9, and have had no problems whatsoever. I plan on purchasing the M&P 357 soon, so I'll have all 3.

Finally got to shoot my new M&P9 yesterday. I bought 2 extra clips for it, and went through 2 full loads on all 4 clips (136 rounds) with no problem at all.

Since this is the first thing that comes up when you google 'M&P9' I wanted to post that I purchased an M&P 9 in July 2008, and have since fired 800 rounds without a single issue at all. At around 500 rounds my 105 lb 5'0" gf fired off about 30 rounds and didnt have a jam occur at all (even though her Kahr mk9 jams 1 in 14 or so if shes tired from having weaker hands).

Im new to guns so I cant give much info or say that I know this gun is great, just wanted others searching for this gun to see that a gun purchased mid-2008 seems to be working for one new owner, and I couldnt be happier.
