Sad Sad day for my PT1911

Taurus owners take a pretty bad bashing from a lot of gun snob types. Every manufacturer has guns that need to be returned for one thing or another and Taurus makes so many guns you will hear of more problems than with others. The PT 1911 is a nice pistol and no more problematic or a POS than any other. There are countless happy owners.

I agree. Every brand has its lemons. A few days ago there was an active thread on THR about the guns that people had had problems with, and Kimber--a pretty reputable company that sells its 1911s for considerably more--came up repeatedly. On the internet, fact and opinion, allegory and legend, all get blended together. Most of the "authorities" have no first-hand knowledge.

I will say this, though--6 to 8 months is way too long. Taurus should take care of its existing customers first, then fulfill other orders. Personally, I'd take it to a local gunsmith to get an assessment, then make the decision as to what I was going to do.

that does suck. my dealings with taurus has not been very good either. it took me over 3 months, and cost me $65.00 to get a recoil spring replaced. if you can get a refund from them by all means, DO IT! and never buy another taurus again! when their sales drop, they will have to figure out why. but many of us know where the prolem lies. to bad they do not care enough to fix their customer service department:mad::fire::banghead:.

You should have payed under 550 for that gun. Go buy one for twice as much and then wine about it. Most basic packages will have some minner shortcomeings . See whats wroung with yours first . Might just a cheaply price idem ,fix it and go on. Ever part on that gun is standard 1911 across the market. I know onw guy that shoots one in production class and has acouple 1000 and has replaced the safty but like most changed springs fireing pin and done some trigger tuneing. OH ,likes his cheap gun. His other two have several 1000 dallors invested and have had most all parts replaced over time.

I see as many threads about Kimbers as I do about the Taurus. Kimber does turn them around faster.

Wow, that is basic gun maintenance 101 for a 1911. Why wouldn't you just do it yourself?

I agree and for what they charge, they SHOULD run perfectly, plus they SHOULD NOT have a plastic MSH.

I have put countless rounds through my pt1911 without a single hiccup.... I have said many times and obviously will say many more, it shoots circles around my springfield, I couldnt be happier with it...

Man pets the dog and gets bit. He pets the dog again and gets bit again, and again, and again. Another man walks up and pets the dog and he doesn't get bit. Yet another man walks up and he also gets bit. Finally another man walks up and goes to pet the dog and the two men who were bit say "Hey, don't pet that dog, you'll get bit" to which the man who didn't get bit responds "That dog doesn't bite, and besides, those two guys are dog snobs."

Anybody who has to send a 1911 back to the manufacturer to find out what's wrong with it should not own a 1911.

Sent back for a new recoil spring? That's bad. I can't think of a simpler semi-auto handgun to change that spring in - even a Glock is more difficult.

I will go a step further... if you cannot change a recoil spring in pretty much any semi-auto, then stick with revolvers...

Ok - I can easily agree with the recoil spring point or any other equally elementary maintenance/repair issue. But when you can't immediately discern the source of the malfunction, and you're not a gunsmith - what are you supposed to do?
What is it with the 1911 that you have to be a virtual gunsmith to comfortably own one? Is the design that obsolete that it is less of a serious firearm and more of a hobby, like owning a vintage car? (which is not necessarily a bad thing, if that's just the way it is)

I'd let a local smith fix it. Then sell it. Chances are it can be fixed for much less than the cost of shipping it back. Not to mention the time and trouble involved.

First off

all guns break. It is a fact of life. I have heard a lot of good about the Taurus 1911 so I recently bought one. I ahve over 1000 rounds through it in the 5 weeks or so that I have owned it. I have had exactly two bobbles with it and both were with my hand loads. On one of the rounds I was able to deteremine that I failed to to crimp the case and the gun was very dirty so it failed to return to battery. I did not determine what was wrong with the other round before I fired it. I have owned two Colt 1911's over the years and sold both of them because they were not reliable. The Taurus is reliable. It is unfortunate that your gun broke but I would take it to a gunsmith and see if it is something simple to fix. Have him check the whole gun out, I doubt that he will tell you it is junk. If you no longer trust the gun then ask for your money back and get something like the STI Spartan. I will be keeping my Taurus. I trust it almost as much as I trust my Glocks and that is saying something.

HAHA, no as in pointing you towards my signature.
Lol - sorry BCCL, but I just couldn't resist that one!:D

CZ223, what type of ammo have you run through your PT-1911 - specifically, was there a variety of defensive HP rounds thrown into the mix?

I have a Colt Defender that would fire once and jam every time. Not for a minute did I believe the Colt was junk. The extractor (MIM) was junk and the Wilson Combat bulletproof replacemant part was $29. I did the install myself, not exactly a drop in but pretty basic. Now I have a Defender that is reliable and fully functional. I believe in working on what you own, be it a car, boat or firearm. I gives you some insight as to how things work. But as Dirty Harry said, "a man's got to know his limitations".Take down the Taurus and fix it yourself.

So far, mine has had Winchester 185gr Silvertips and Winchester 230gr JHP's ran through it, without a single problem.

Doesn't matter what you look up and/or review. All products, be they guns, computer hard drives, tires, whatever, have polarizing reviews. only people who really hate or really love something bother to post a review. It's easy to hate, and people who spend a lot on (insert shoes, lexus, les baer, high end dishwasher or whatever, as appropriate) seem to feel obligated to defend the product they bought against a cheaper one. some sort of self justification.

All that to say, does taurus make junk junk and only junk? No. Does taurus have a higher lemon rate than other companies? Probably. I figure they are the Hyundai of the gun world. started cheap, getting better, but still having to shed a reputation, tighten quality control, tone down some claims, etc.

and in the interest of full disclosure, I"ve got a pt1911. I've had a few problems, all of them ammo related (personal reloads) I don't like the sights, and the grips and finish are crappy. But the trigger is nice, the gun was cheap, I don't feel like a I have so much $$ in it I have to baby it. Overall I am pleased with it and would recommend it to a friend, with a caution that sometimes they break, and taurus makes a higher number of lemons. they were a better deal when they were cheaper. like the sks.

I'm agreed with crankshop----if you have something you should at least be knowledgeable for its basic principles and to trouble shoot it when it ain't feeling well. this goes to hobby stuff, homes, cars and even compu

Fix it sell and join the burned by Taurus once and never again club. People buy into the "Taurus has improved" nonsense. I bought one of their titanium Trackers in 2003 because I believed the Taurus is good now reports. After paying to ship it back 3x for the same problem with a minimum two month turn around time I sold it at about a 50% loss. Nobody wants to buy a used Taurus because they figure someone is dumping a problem gun. If you got a good Taurus count yourself as lucky. For me the problems and hassle were not worth the $100 I initially saved by not getting a S&W. Given the S&W I would have bought now sells used for what they were new in 2003, and is going up in value, the Taurus was by far the worst firearm buying decision I have ever made.

Ok it was the pin thanks Grizfire, and I contacted Taurus for a refund instead of a new gun, hope that will be here before the new gun would have been here. I can also change many parts on my 1911's but did not want to void Taurus warranty glad that I did not considering they will be sending me a full refund plus the tax. Not sure what to get this time but sure I can find something.:D
Thanks for all your help everyone.

The Taurus "Lifetime Warranty" means you'll be dealing with them for the...REST of your life! Enjoy your introduction to the "Fool Me Once" Club. Hope things swiftly work-out exactly as you wish. It took me months & months (& months & months...)
