This sounds crazy I know, but I’ve used W231 and Titegroup for reduced powder rifle loads. Clean Shot is plentiful locally right now so I thought I may stock up on it. I can run it in all my pistol cartridges. However, I haven’t heard of anyone using it in rifle cartridges.

I have a target/small game load using cast bullets in 30-30 that uses W231. Clean Shot seems similar to Bullseye powder in terms of speed. I got the load from the Marlin Owner’s forum for 30-30 Miniature and Short Range factory loads copies. They listed several powders but Clean Shot was not among them. Any ideas on where to start or if this is a really bad idea?

Definitely get it for pistol. In .30-30 I have no idea. Maybe load it like W231 and see but you are on a narrow ledge there. If you compare Clean Shot loading data to the other powders listed for identical projectiles it doesn’t really line up that well. I compared .38Spl and 9mm where I had bullet matches in other powders and it’s closest to Accurate No.2 - which probably doesn’t help but is as far as I’ve gotten this morning with looking.

It might be too fast for my uses. The recommended load at Marlin Owners is 5.5 grains of W231. I settled on 5.7 as the most accurate in my rifle. I’d drop down to a 115 grain Acme cast bullet and 5 grains of Clean Shot if I try it. I currently use a 135 grain RNFP.

I tried 2400 but had pretty bad leading. I’ve shot the same bullet with both H335 and W231 with no leading issues.

Leading... or powder fouling? 2400 likes a full case and pressure to burn well... same as IMR4227, W296, et al. I've used AA5744, for example, in a reduced load... and not really that reduced... and I had to use a shovel to get the crap out of the barrel... it simply did not burn well at that stage.

My dad's 6.5x55 sweed load was 14 grains of 2400 with a cast bullet. Right about there is my plan to test 4227. There are #9 loads in a manual I have somewhere but mag pistol seems to work really well in reduced rifle loads.

Pretty sure it was lead. It came out on the first patch like black glitter. Accuracy went from OK to terrible in about 6 shots. I was running pretty hot, I think. One of the other members here helped me straighten it out. Leading went away after dropping the charge, but the accuracy was never there.

Sounds like you had shear on a soft bullet. Might want to drop back to start and see if you get accuracy. A harder mix sounds warranted.

I moved on from 2400 powder in my 30-30. It's far more effectively used in my 357 Mag loads. That and given I'm looking for a replacement anyway, I probably won't try it in cast or reduced rifle loads any more. The bullets are Acme, which I believe are BHN 16.

For 150 berry's 15.8 of blue dot is gooder. I should test it on the 170 cast some day....

I want to try blue dot in 9mm too but haven’t seen any. If I do, I probably won’t like the price.

I found both no 2 and no 5 conversations on other boards via google. Several people shooting 115-125 gr. cast with no 2 at plinking velocities. No 5 seems more popular.

I don't consider ball powders for reduced rifle loads....
W231 is a ball powder. Flattened ball, but a ball powder. That's all Winchester has; ball powders.

I would try it. I've used Clays, Bullseye, Promo, W231, even Trap 100 in reduced rifle.

I would use a 10% reduced W231 charge, and see how it goes.
