To me a handgun is a lousy SHTF choice, since I can't have a rifle I choose a Thompson Encore 15" .308 then I can shoot all those guys with Glocks and S&Ws before they get within range.

+1 for the wheel gun.

I'd probably go with the 357 magnum. Since you can run 38 special rounds through it and both calibers are pretty much everywhere.

I might go with the 44 magnum just because of the sheer power of the gun.

Either way I'd pick up dozen or so speed loaders for the revolver.

I would not go with a semi-auto simply because I wouldn't have time to break it in and I would want something that was going to work perfectly out of the box with the least likelyhood of jamming or fouling in a SHTF situation.

In Arizona, Texas, and California...the SHTF is ALREADY hitting the fan.

The "Reality"...to compliment the 12ga., .30-06, and HiPower I already have.

This isn't another of those usual "you can only have one gun" threads. We've all seen those where you have to pick your favorite handgun. This is different and you gotta be honest with yourself to anwer properly.

Assume you are unarmed and social problems have broken out all around you. You get one trip to an armory to pick the one handgun that you will immediately have to protect yourself. There won't be any time to break the gun in or tune it up or send it back to the factory for repair. This isn't about looks or ego. This gun you have to grab and go with.

though, admittedly, the SP101 would be my very next choice. The toughest runnin' .357 snub of all time!

Much as I really don't like the kick and slower fire of a revolver, I'd have to pick something in 357. Dead reliable, always goes bang.
