I have been looking for a rifle in 308 and found the Stevens model 200 in the right price range (under $300). Anyone here have an opinion or expierence with one of these. Seems to be the same as savage without the accu trigger.

I had a Stevens 200 .223 for a couple of years. Great gun to start with. Mine could do 3/4" on a good day, the trigger was a little bit stiff though.

I'd buy it again if I were in that budget.

It will be for my son on christmas. Hopefully something nice without breaking the bank.

Get one...only difference between it and the Savage is no accutrigger. Get an SSS trigger, prefit barrel and you will be GTG.

I love my Model 200 in .223. I installed an E-Z Pull trigger assist for about 40 bucks. I have a Simmons 44 magnum scope on it. Works great.

Nothing at all wrong with the Stevens 200 but for about the same money I would look at the Marlin XS-7, You may prefer the Stevens, but I like the Marlin a little better.

I like both for different reasons. Out of the box I like the Marlin, due to a better stock and trigger, but with a little work (stock and trigger) I think the Stevens has the potential for greater accuracy. Both are good solid rifles and a great value.

:)

The Stevens 200 is a mix between the pre accutrigger models and the first accutrigger models. It has the old 3 screw trigger but the receiver is the round top like the accutrigger model. If you buy bases for the rifle you need the accutrigger model bases. The ones I have seen used the staggered feed mag and not the centerfeed that the new Savage models use. That may have changed though as I haven't checked them since the centerfeed came out for the Savage line.

So its a slightly unique but still 10/110 action, standard Savage sporter barrels, and the old staggered feed polymer stock. Basically the pre-accutrigger model but with a rounded top to the receiver.

Great rifle for the price though I do like the accutrigger and would personally spend the extra money for a model with that. Still mine shot well enough, especially for the price.

Personally did not care for the Magazine. I suppose some are real good OTB, some evidently are not, I got a 7mm-08 that shot a 4" "group". sold it within a few weeks.
Action: did not care for how the bolt on mine did not seem all that tight-feeling at the bolt handle when closed.

I don't consider myself a great shot, so if this rifle is used by someone who really knows how to shoot it would be really impressive.

These are all from factory ammo. 180 grain federal power shock, the cheapest I could find. 200 yards.

They have a great search function on their site.
Unless I missed it before, they recently added that, and it is handy. I used it just today to help a friend find a nice .223Rem. turn bolt, and it sure was helpful...just don't hit back because it's coded in Adobe Flash.

:)

I don't have a picture of it available but I took my Stevens 200 in ,223 and ditched the tupperware stock for a laminate stock, pillar and glass bedded the action and it shoots my 52 gr. Hornady AMAX loads with 5 shots that can be covered with a dime. Yeah they are good rifles but in a cheap stock.

Yes, ditto they are great guns, and the $300 price is middle of the road right now, so you are getting a pretty good deal if the gun is in perfect condition.

I've got 3 Stevens 200. 1. 22-250 2. .223 3. .308 and only the 22-250 don't punch beautiful groups yet. I suspect based on the OTB performance of the other 2 it's either barrel break-in or load developemnt.
That cheap stock I fixed by sanding all the mold flash of as well as sharp edge on checkering, Glass and piller bedded and expanded foam in but stock to cut down on twanging when fired. I also painted all 3 with Krylon Fusian paint. It Don't Wear Off.
BTW I read that barrels are not standard Savage thread pitch so and are different rifling that Savage. So you can't buy Savage replacements but they do install and adjust just like Savage.
These are good guns.

Savage has 9 centerfire LH action offerings; Only two with accustock & accutrigger. They have a great search function on their site.

Yes Savage makes left hand rifles but they don't make the Stevens 200 in left hand. I have had a few lefty Savage rifles over the years and really like them. I just wish they would produce the Stevens 200 in left hand.
