Steyr M9 beating up your brass?

My M9 is beating up my brass and it seems to be due to the "loaded chamber indicator" being pulled across the brass upon being ejected.
Is this typical with this pistol?

Also, what are the thoughts about the filling in of the primer pockets? The ammunition is new S&B 115 grain. These rounds fire normally in every other respect in the M9. Further, in every other 9mm handgun I own there is not the filling in of the firing pin strike as is seen in the attachment. The cases in the attachment were fired from both of my M9's.

Haven't seen that affect on the casings fired from my M9. I make a note to look more carefully at the casings next week when I hit the range. Definitely something not right about that.

S&B is not reliable in my Steyr M9. I can't get through a box without a failure to extract. I don't have this problem with other practice ammunition, such as Winchester USA.

I've noticed 2 little nicks in all of my used brass out of the M9. Not to the degree that yours is though. I was using Magtech ammo

Wierd

I also own an M9 and have never seen anything like what you are seeing. Could it be that your Chamber Indicator is sticking out too far?? I wish I could think of a good way to measure how far mine sticks out. I will try to find something that is a similar width like a dime or something then you will have something to compare it to. Just a thought.

Went to the range yesterday, sure enough, my Steyr does the same thing.

I have never noticed anything like that on the brass fired out of my M40. I'll keep an eye on it though. If it is what sturmruger is suggesting I wonder what is keeping your Styre from FTEing more often?

Sorry Hahn

Sometimes my brain doesn't work in a normal fashion so normal people don't know what I'm talking about.

FTEing=Fail To Ejecting

Most of the time it is seen as FTE for "Fail To Eject"

Now that I look at it should have read failing to eject.

Sent an e-mail to Diamond Shooters Supply. They did not seem to know about this problem. I think I'm going to e-mail the main Steyr offices to see if they know whats going on.

Flashpoint,

Thanks.
Thought it may have been that, but the "ing" through me off.

I also saw a fair high number of failure to eject/extract about the time I was putting round 500 through the pistol. I installed a "very heavy" extractor spring and that put a quick end to that problem.

Beav,

Please let us know what they have to say.
I've been entertaining the idea of contacting the main offices as well. But was interested in seeing what you gentlemen had to say before doing so. Plus I didn’t want to burn a second "Pistol Purchase Permit" on the same firearm just to get my M9 back from repair if I could solve the (problem?) mystery myself.

The CLIO in my county has, in his political correctness, now limited us to 5 purchase permits per year and talk is, that he may reduce it to two!

Ok. Went to the range and shot my Steyr.

Sure 'nuf. there was the divot from the Firing Pin on the primer and two other light dings on bottom of the casing that weren't there when I loaded the magazine.

If I know where my digital camera was, I would take and post a pic.

My S40 leaves the same marks.
they're caused by the firing pin being spring-loaded against the casing until the slide cycles all the way back, and the striker/firing pin is caught and retained by the sear assembly.
More or less a normal consequence of the way this mechanism is designed.

Got a reply back from Steyr. I don't have the exact e-mail with me but Federic Pavat/Steyr stated that by looking at Steyr Hahn's picture the outer mark on the rim is the loaded chamber indicator but the marks in between the primer and the rim are due to dimensional issues with the brass. He then refered me to Diamond Shooters Supply. I have a bad extractor on my Steyr right now that I need replaced/repaired, I might have Diamond Shooters Supply take a look at this while they're at it. I'll attach the exact Steyr e-mail when I head in to work tonight just in case I misunderstood something. :)

I'm heading to the reloading room to take a look at my brass. I have not noticed this yet with my M40 and have not used any S&B.

I get the same results with Winchester white box.

This is what I got from Steyr;
