Stopped at my local sporting goods store today to buy a couple of pounds of H Varget and a pound of IMR 4064. (& perhaps whatever caught my eye on the walk through the candy store)
Was I ever surprised at the price of gunpowder! One Lb of H Varget had the price of $32.99 & one Lb of IMR 4064 was priced at $29.99.
Add in local sales tax & s $100.00 bill is gone gone gone.
I checked the online prices from two vendors & I would break even on the 3 cannisters of powder including shipping and the $30.00 HazMat fee.
I did walk out without spending my hard earned $. I can understand a local store needing to make a bit more money, but 1/3 more???

Roger

One of the stores near me is about 10 bucks higher on everything than they need to be. No wonder the stuff never leaves the shelves.

Unless local sales tax is more than 50% I don't think that two lb would run you 100 bucks (the hazmat is already built into the marked price in every retail store I have ever seen).

Personally I pay the 30 bucks/lb locally if they have a powder I want to try and don't plan an online bulk order for a while onto which I can tack a 1lb trial can for "free" (hazmat-wise). I wouldn't buy in bulk locally, but $30 for a pound locally sure beats the $20+$25 hazmat, plus regular shipping = ~$50+ it would cost to buy a single pound online.

$33x2=$66

$66+30=$96

$96+Crazy state tax= over $100

Just saying ;)

I find that the "Mom & Pop" sporting goods stores are way cheaper than most LGS. I like supporting my LGS but sometimes I just can't!!

We have one of those stores also. They get $5 for CCI primers or $45 per 1K, and they're powders are super marked up too.

You would hate trying to reload in other countries - saw an ad for a gun shop in NZ where one pounders of Hodgdon powders were $80 and up

Your prices seem to be the going rate at local stores - between shipping and hazmat, carrying costs, minimum order quantities required, etc., all those costs get passed onto you. Don't forget the 11% tax we all pay on ammo and components that is built into that price.

That is why you buy in 8# jugs; but until you are sure if the powder will work for your use, you have to suck up the 1# prices....

OR you go in on a buy with a bunch of folks and buy a case or two of one pounders and split the hazmat/shipping costs

This is why it makes sense to buy powder and primers online, in gigantic quantities. It's like ripping off a bandaid. It hurts at the time, but it hurts less over the long haul.

I like that. I buy 8#'ers to try but I won't pay over $10 a pound. I didn't anyway but now that I have the AR to load for I might have to change the rule.

I stopped in a local gunshop last weekend and found out they're not goning to stock 8# in rifle powder anymore. I bought two dusty 8# in WW-760 for $110 each. That ought to hold me this summer. Sticker price was $135 each.

The 2 LGS in my area are pretty decent. A few $ over typical online price in most cases. Have to pay state sales tax too, but that isn't the store's fault.

$21.99/lb of H335, $19.99/lb for W231, & $30.99/1k Win primers. Only thing I felt I got gouged on wwas CCI #41 primers @ $37.99 but I've similar prices online but also a lot lower - maybe it's their supplier since everything else is pretty reasonable considering it's a retail store.

Just ordered for PV and man! their IMR 3031 went up! 142.00 for 8lbs!!! I wont be ordering to much from them now on and thats not the only thing that went up!.:cuss:

All business needs to make a profit to stay in business. It is amazing that you think that you need X$ but not the next guy. Walmart etc. have closed many local business, and we complain because we don't have a choice, yet we don't want to pay these people to stay in business. You are paying for the convenience. The Govt. knows who and what with the internet. Save a dollar and lose your rights.

Recently (2 weeks ago) bought 1lb. of Hodgdon Titegroup and 1,000 #500 CCI primers for $55.39 including WV sales tax (6%). The receipt doesn't break down the parts, but I know the Titegroup was $18.xx and the primers were $37.xx and he gave me a break for getting 1K primers.

Team up with a shooting buddy you can trust & bulk order from Natchez or the like. Order all of the predictable, tried & true powders (4895, Benchmark, Varget, Bullseye, 700x) you can in as much bulk as you can get in 1 Haz Mat fee. Only order your experimental stuff 1 lb. at a time & split it to play with.

They get a $1000 bill from me about every 6-8 months if I'm having fun.

Hey Jack, you are complaining about paying under 20 per pound? Really dude? Guess you are in for some sticker shock as you go shopping, especially as the hazmat has gone up

HAZMAT only went up $2. I haven't looked in a couple weeks but I probably have enough for the rest of my life if it wasn't for that auto loader I just bought.

HazMat went up on my last order to PV a few weeks back. Varget which was $139.50 is now $145/8# jug.

I'm getting my next PV in order before we see any additional price hikes. I talked to PV a few weeks back and they indicated that they were going to be putting a price increase in place.

I ordered 4 lbs of powder and 1K primers last night from PV. Total cost including shipping and hazmat was $129. The same order from my LGS would have been $158 tax included.

For me it is $25ish,depending what brand powder ,primers are $35. At the one and only place that stocks up,and they are p****s.So I would be happy to buy online and let them close up.

It so happens a small gun range/hobby gun store 1 mile from my house, a new owner bought it and he gets this and that for reloading supplies, if I give him a list of powders and such, whenever he goes to pick up supplies(he drives to a main distributer, rather than ordering and paying the shipping/hazmat)he will pick my stuff up also and sells it for about what Powder Valley does,or a buck more. I just have to give him time, maybe 2 or 3 months sometimes, when he has enough to go. I'm giving him as much business as I can,and slowly he will stock more stuff as long as he knows what to get.
