I owned a Marlin94 357 but it just wouldn't cycle reliably. I have since wanted a 77/357 and can't seem to get it out of my head. Please talk me out of this rifle.

My only complaints were.....

the sticky recoil pad.

small bolt knob

bolt handle to close to scope when bolt is open, hard to work the bolt right quickly.

didnt like 158 grain bullets, nor did it like hard cast lead

.38's tend to rim lock in the mag, which requires you to drop the mag, and fiddle with them to get things unlocked.

Other than that, nothing. :)

I love mine. Accurate enough as long as you don't get the barrel too hot. My bolt works just fine with a 1-4 scope on it. It's my backup deer rifle this season, not that I think I'll need it.

If you can do it, I would suggest it.

^^^ this.

Keep the barrel cool and it runs pretty accurate, once it heats up it'll start stringing on you.

Mine wears a Redfield 2-7x, shoots 158 XTPs into clover leafs @50 yds, is easy on the shoulder and ears, and my wife likes to shoot it. It's the only 357 caliber firearm I still own.

I guess I can't talk you out of one...

By all the other accounts the Marlin should have been a dream to cycle and shoot. Why didn't you simply fix it or get it fixed? Clearly it had an issue that needed attention.

The Marlin 1894 in .44Mag I got to try was a great rifle with enough kick to make me think I was seriously capable of doing some harm to targets or that it would make a good in close hunting arm.

Oops, almost forgot. The Ruger. No you shouldn't buy it. You might like it and then where would you be?

This coming from the guy that just dropped about 1.5x the cost on a single shot Uberti High Wall in .38-55 so I could shoot at steel out to 400 yards or more with rainbow trajectories.

Life's too short. If you like bolt rifles and you like the .357Mag and it won't make you miss a house payment, braces for the kids or anything else important then go for it. The worst is that you may need to stay in and eat KD for a month.... :D

okay, don't buy one, get a lever action Rossi or other brand even a cheapo handi riflle....to me they are a great rifle, Ruger is Ruger...great firearms

There's a used stainless and synthetic one locally for sale. It's overpriced, but I've checked it out a few times. It seems pretty solid, and .357 rifles are exceedingly fun.

My Stepdad has one in 44Mag, it kicks like a mule! A fun gun to shoot for sure... His only gripe is he wanted more brass for load development, couldn't find any!!!
