Tell me about AR-style .22s...

I have a Colt M4 made by umerex for about 20 years. It has a carbine stock and takes the same Colt flat top carry handle. I put an old Isreali surplus redot on it and it is 30 years old and still glows faintly ! It also has a light gathering light pipe deal that works great in the light and the 10 or 20 round Colt Mags work well in it and are easy for children to reload . When I found there was a simple screw adjustable recoil spring I dialed it in for standard velocity CCI ammo and it seems close to 100% reliable. It looks exactly like a Colt branded M4 ! The flash suppressor is threaded on but not 1/2x28 ! There is an adapter to 1/2x28 mid tho for a suppressor.
Al that said I much prefer my 16" take down 10-22 . I use the Ruger 25 round magazines and the double ended 50 round ones with perfect reliability. The kids like the looks of the Colt M4 , and shoot it a bit, but soon want to shoot the 10-22 with it's BX trigger and a supressor and don't look at the Colt :)

I haven’t messed with many but have seen some pretty crummy plastic “kinda looks like an AR.” ones.

What is the “style” you are looking for exactly. Just a .22 rimfire with an abnormally high sight height vs bore centerline or just something black that doesn’t look traditional?

The first ones I remember were in the early-mid ‘80’s like the Italian EMF AP-74 and the fairly rare Federal engineering XC-220. There have been some less than reliable ones out there since then though.

I only have one .22lr AR upper, I bought to introduce a Young new shooter to the platform and the sight system (KNS front/NM rear), I used a CMMG “dedicated” upper on the same lower they were going to be shooting with the centerfire upper.

Figured it would be the most identical, no crummy trigger or different locations of cheek weld/ sight height, safety, mag release, etc. vs something that’s not a “real” one, because it is a real one.

I went back and forth on just a chamber adapter conversion but none of them shot as well as I had hoped for.

Only the second time you ask him. The first time you do he will say, “What?”

HUH?????????? :D

.455_Hunter, as you can see there are lots fo good reasons to own a 22 conversion and/or dedicated upper or even something like the S&W M&P12/22 or the Colt M4-22. The nice thing about building your own dedicated upper, you can build your upper anyway you want it.
