the 5.7x28 nato - my theory

I spent part of my afternoon at Kaw Valley Gun club indoor range today. I just had to try out my new redhawk. There was a big sign on the 2nd door leading to the firing line. That banned that round from use on this range. It explained that it had the potential to penetrate the backstop. I guess i didn't realize they had that much zip.
Sounds like someone at the range is gullible and has fallen for the Bradyite hype in the MSM. If you believed the New York Times and other press-release peddlers, you'd think that the FiveSeven's penetrating ability with civilian ammo was just shy of tungsten-core .30-06.

I was referring to the idea that the varmint grenade would be a good SD round. There is a reason that the military has paid money for rifles like the Barret .50 and .338 Lapua.
It's not because they want a round with a superior ability to deposit energy.

My 5.7x28 is nothing compared to my 44mag super red hawk when it comes to penatration.

5.7mm is a neat little bullet. But the little 20gr bullet is underwhelming in a combat role. Car doors and auto-glass are big inhibitors for such a light weight-high velocity bullet.

But if all our enemies were nudist jihadists on bicycles in built up cities on open streets then maybe I will change my mind.

Apples to handgrenades

OK as you are entertaining thoughts of using the five-seven in a defensive role and using varment grenades on the wrong type of vermin and at ranges that truely render the weapon useless. I have something for you to chew on.

I'm not going to compare it to a rifle or rifle round.... nope to easy; all modern military rifle rounds make 5.7x28 a joke at all ranges and under any circumstances.

As a SMG I would say that the added range gives it an edge as a "compact rifle stand in" that would possibly be better than a SMG in certain circumstances as a last resort weapon when someone finds themself dropped into combat unpepaired (pilot's best friend potential for sure) so im going to give it a possible legitamate use there. But I would go as far as to say that when a SMG is taken into battle intentionally it is meant to be used at pistol ranges or a little further and virtually all realistic pistol ammunition used in SMG's would get that job done better (kill the creep faster at close range).

Armor penetration: Sure if you are millitary or law enforcement... You and I can't get that ammo and the millitary and police have better toys. Kind of useless there, too.

Lastly, a pistol comparison. You and I are not likely to run up against body armor, so lets change armor penetration to penetration for this. That's actually a factor according to the FBI, where AP is not.

You like a Pistol with 20+1 capasity.
You like a pistol with long range accuracy.
You like a pistol with flat trajectory.
You like a polymer lower.
You like 10mm.

This is not the gun you seek. this is a plinker or conversation piece, at best.
What you are dieing to get your hands on is a Glock 20 with Ardondo +5 base plate.

20+1 ~ check
long range and flat trajectory ~ check
Polymer ~ check
10mm ~ check
Way better penetration ~ Check
Rapid target reaquasition ~ not as well but each shot delivers 3x the ME, at least, so you wont have to shoot them 20+1 times and then pray like you will with the 5.7
AP ~ probably not, but they will wish it had.

I mean honestly it is having to use special law enforcement/military, illegal to the public loads to almost be as good as a low end 9mm, which itself with the police only +P++ loads is almost as good as a real side arm.

If it's not fair to kick the five-seven's butt with a glock 20 compairison I will let YOU compair it to a Grendal P30 with 30+1 rounds of .22 magnum just to add insult to injury if .22's are your thing (also no good as a combat weapon).

I give it the rating ***better than a knife***

Have fun thinking and rethinking your .22 to try and find some real use in combat and back to the 10ring with uncle Ted I go. :neener:

made the new account because I considered getting a this FN pistol untill I realized that it wasent worth anything honestly and found some one trying to ratonalize it in the same way I tried and failed. Glock fan sure they are nice pistols and I love my Glock 20 but I did mention a Grendal for further comparison and I could have gone on with other better choices but dident. im probibly going to discuss firearms here now that I found you guys. Way to welcome me BTW lol. I realy think this pistol is a neat idea it's just a shame that they restrict the good ammo. the AP stuff is the only real reason for a 5.7x28 dont you think? Always wished they made a bull pup .223 pistol with an angled mag so that it's off to one side of your wrist and this is as close as they have gotten but still no cigar. As far as being a Glock 20 fan you got me I love mine.

Why?

Name another CCW (comfortably carryable) that containes as much as 21 rounds of 10mm double tap? Combined ME, KE, take your pick just top it if you can in something you would carry every day concealed. I tried by looking into the five-seven but I was barking up the wrong tree. So I'm a fan untill there is something better. ;)

I hope your not comparing this dimunitive round to the 7.62 nato, it may be a good round but in combat esp mout situations more power means versatality.
