Should I anticipate any issues using the rail supplied by Marlin with the purchase of my rifle? My scope option is a 3-9x40 Tasco.

I don't know why I'm the only person reporting problems with the Marlin scope base.

I'm pretty sure that it would work fine with the smaller scopes normally found on a .22 lever rifle, but the scope I have mounted on mine is quite a bit larger than what most folks would consider normal. The big scope's weight and length offer more stress and leverage to the mount.

My experience has been very positive with the Marlin rail. Because I had no other choice at the time and needed to scope the rifle for the Valentines shoot I put a huge old Burris target scope on mine. Absolutely no tendency to string in a vertical plane. Believe me I was looking for it but it just isn't there.

Just another data point. Soon I hope to put a more appropriate scope on my rifle but I'll probably go back on there with the Burris to shoot the Shamrock Shoot.

Now I've gone and done it...

Here I was, all fixed up with an assortment of perfectly usable excuses, and I screwed it all up.

Yeah, I used to be able to say"Parallax" or "Mount" or "Trigger", and everybody believed me...

Now look at me.

Not a single excuse in sight.

You are looking at a Model 39 with a recent trigger job, a brand-new extra beefy Bsquare mount, and what just might possibly be the only 3-9X40 VX1RF in the whole state of Texas.

If I fail to produce some real nice groups with this setup, it's MY fault.

What have I gotten myself into?:D

Yeah that looks sweet, but how about that lace!? Is that hand made?:D
I bet that set up lives up to your expectations and then some!

I decided to mount my Tasco 3-9x40 last night and I don't know how common it is to mount a scope and not need to make a single adjustment to zero it in, but the very first shot I took was dead center on the pinecone I shot at 25 yards or so. I took 14 more shots and hit it everytime! I'm off to buy a lottery ticket now. Here's my set up as it is with the Tasco, My ex took all the lace with her so I had to settle for wool.

That reminds me, my Dad has a Browning BL lever rifle that he bought for me,(us), when I was a kid ,way back in the early '70's... if there's enough time, perhaps I could borrow it for a little comparasin test. I haven't used it much over the years; just sight it in for him now and then. He's 77 years old and needs it to defend his homestead from the red squirrel minions. Between he and I, the red squirrel population on our side of town is well under control. As I remember, the Browning is a good deal lighter and shorter than the 39a and has a much shorter lever stroke.

Browning BL and Marlin 39a comparasin

Frank, I will do my best; even if I don't get the chance to submit an entry with the Browning, I will post a comparasin target when I'm able. Perhaps it will work out that I can submit an entry with it; it kind of depends on timing and weather. That's a task I will enjoy doing!

...the only 3-9X40 VX1RF in the whole state of Texas.
And perhaps the only 3-9X40 VX1RF on a 39 on planet Earth.

How could one possibly fall short of a 0.25" group at 100 yds with that?

Pressure is on ... :D
__________

I agree, Angus: nice rifle.

OK, now it's all starting to make sense to me.

My original scope mount used the Marlin base, and Millet rings.

marlin22014.jpg

This setup was VERY rubbery and flexible. I got vertical stringing and the scope didn't hold zero well. One pound of pressure on the front bell of the scope would noticeably flex the whole thing.

The Millet rings had a cheezy base clamp, with minimal clamp area, and I correctly identified that as part of the problem.

So, I changed it up, and went for overkill.

scopemount001.jpg

I got some beefy rings with nice strong clamps, and put three of them on there.

This setup worked very well indeed. The vertical stringing was gone, the scope held zero, and there was no discernible flex anywhere.

There were a couple of problems with this setup.

First, it looked stupid. At the range, folks would look at it without knowing the background and just decide that I'm a moron.

And second, the Marlin base doesn't have a screw slot where the third clamp goes. In order to do this, I had to butcher the mount with a cordless drill and make my own slot. The clamp covered the butcher job, but I knew it was there and didn't like it.

So, I re-did the mount.

39eotech003-2.jpg

I got the beefy Bsquare mount and put it on with the beefy Bsquare rings.

Nice.

Except for one thing...

It's rubbery and flexible all over again. Not as bad as the original setup, but not as rigid as the three ring circus.

So I looked at it.

I wiggled it.

I looked at pics of the three ring circus.

I wiggled it some more...

And I changed it.

39eotech.jpg

Now we're talking!

By moving the front clamp closer to the rigid part of the base, I eliminated the flex designed into the mount.

It turns out that the front ring on the three ring circus was doing nothing.

The strength was coming from the location of the ring on the base.

Because the Bsquare base has multiple slots, it readily allows me to put the rings in a position that works.

This setup is rigid, and does not flex when pressure is applied to the bell of the scope.

Finally, I'm happy. I believe I have a mount system here worthy of the scope and rifle.

Now, for some range time.:D

I think your perception was mistaken. They weren't thinking 'he's a moron, ' they saw that you had MORE ON. :p

It's an easy mistake to make, though I usually make it the other way around according to my wife... :D

I managed to sneak out at lunch and fired about 50 rounds.

For some reason, I decided to not put locktite on the mount screws and they came loose on me.

No biggie. I can fix that.

The good news is that my group sizes appear to have been cut in half, and I now feel like this rifle might be a contender.

I'll deal with the setup some more tonight...

inner mag tube

The inner mag tube slips out of the magazine when the mag is unloaded. Follower is fully extended and spring provides good tension on the follower.

Any suggestions for a fix?

Inner tube

Hi p3boy
First a big welcome to the Model 39 Forum
 I am a bit confused about what you described in your post. The little pin protruding that locks the inner tube in the outer tube should keep that from happening. In other words how does it load? The slot the pin fits in may need some tender dressing up.:)If, on the other hand, you are talking about the inner tube just coming out of the end of the outer tube, it is designed to do that. Found if I used the cylindrical multichamber reloader, the funnel can bugger the end of the outer tube if you are not careful:eek:. I stopped using it on the 39. Other tubes seem to be a mite thicker and don't bend as easily. I now have a headache and need some coffee. Hope I was a little help.
I am sure others with more experience and knowledge will be along to help and welcome you. And check the Postal contest at the start in the Stickys.:D:D

ShakyJake, thanks for the welcome. Great site and some wonderful contributors.
The pin holds the inner tube if at least one cartridge is in the mag. However, with an empty mag there is no pressure on the pin and the inner tube rotates slighly and releases from the outer tube. Seems like the follower and follower spring should provide some tension but doesn't. Haven't used a funnel for loading but possibly crimping (slightly) the end of the outer tube might help. Always hate to bend metal to fix a problem. Gun is 1970 vintage and has less than 200 rounds fired.

loose inner tube

Hi p3boy
Understand about not crimping metal. Mine is a '77. No idea how many were put through it. I have put about 4-500 in the few months I have owned it. They are addictive. I checked the outer tube (here we go again):uhoh: and the slot the pin fits in has an ever so slignt bump, lack of better term, that retains the inner tube pin causing me to push down slightly when I rotate the tube to extract it. With the inner tube (empty) closed and pulled up in the slot mine can not come out. Give that slot a close inspection, there should be a very small bump for the pin. Hope this helps.;)

I got my base loctited and torqued down yesterday, so I ran out to the range again on the way home from work.

I'm not sure what's going on, but for some reason I have to run the adjuster all the way to the left to get my impact point where it needs to be.

I can get it, but just barely.

I suspect that I have mis-matched my rings and it's holding the scope crooked.

I'm going to look into it.

Oddly enough, when it was hitting six inches to the right it printed some nice groups, but when I crank the scope all the way left to center it the group gets bigger.

I'm going to beat this yet...

Mountie

Hi, Rimfire
Man, that mountie has some beautiful graining (?) in her furniture. One of those real classics that improve with age. Can't wait to see how she stacks up in the Shamrock. Most appropriate to follow you home for ST. Patty's day ;)

bet u can't remember

sold guns for a living for 40 years and would bet most of you'se cannot remember when the "Golden 39A " retailed for $99.95. It was then and is still the finest lever action rifle in the "world".

Can anyone recommend me a decent scope for my 39A? Fixed or variable, I'm not fussed. I need something under $250 though. I bought a Tasco World Class 2-8x32 for my CZ, so something similar would be in order for the 39A.
