Thread Locker
I brought home a NIB 39a a couple years ago. Right away I decided to change the sights for accuracy sake. Just so happened that one of the guys at work was a degreed Gun Smith. So, not one to sqaunder a chance to maybe learn something, I brought the rifle to him and we changed out the sights. That was all fine and good and the XS Ghost Ring sights worked well but I did not like the looks of them. I R&R'd the sights to the original and just shot it alot to get good enough to stone a running grey squirrel last fall.
All was just hunky dory exempt for some thread locker clinging to the top of the receiver that I could not get off. I tried a number of ideas and then finally having to admit that I do not know everything called the manufacturer of the stuff.
They said the easiest way to get it off was to SCRAPE it off with razor blade! With a bit of a tremble in my voice from the thought I asked for another solution. The next idea was Acetone (ain't got none) next! After the acetone came rubbing alcohol (got that).
So, I started the proccess of applying the alcohol and reaplying the alcohol and reapplying the alcohol until my patience was shot and I scraped it off with my Buck Knife. I was more careful than a nerosurgeon on the discovery channel. After I had scraped down to the finish, I went back to the alcohol and finshed it up. After the intense operation was complete I applied some oil to the area.
I think the alcohol soak helped to soften the stuff a bit, when I scraped it it came up fairly well. I probably would not have tried this without having a fixture to hold the rifle perfectly still as the chance of a mishap would increase if you were trying to hold the rifle still and scrape at the same time.
Just thought this might be of some value to others.
