The action still seems a bit stiff on this old fellow. Any suggestions for smoothing it up will be appreciated.

It will smooth out some with more shooting. The 39 action is more clunky than say a Henry, but it works. Just cycle the 39 quickly and all will be good.

The quickest way to smooth that action out is shooting fast at close up tin cans and such while standing. It seems shooting at paper targets from a bench just makes you notice the lever action getting in the way more.

Lowepg, not odd just different to me as I'd never seen a 3/8" rimfire grooved rail on a 39.
Usually they are weaver type.

J-Bar, old doesn't indicate how many rounds have passed through it. Unlike many other lever guns that are made with brass or polymer parts, the 39a action is made of all-steel constuction and only gets better with use. You just about can't ware em out. Whatever your shooting position, cycle it "like you mean it". Also, you might want to clean the action with a good clp (Eezox or Breakfree). Great rifle, nice choice!

So true. I've got countless thousands of rounds through mine, and the action is slicker than snot, and the trigger has lightened up enough that if you think about it really hard, it will go off.
This gun is actually the reason I'm going to get rid of my .308 and get a 336 30-30.

Yeah, it's been abit confusing, one day we're all over there, the next day we don't know were anyone was, and then trying to get registered in a new place that didn't want to work the first time. anyway here we all are back in one spot. got out and shot about a hundred round in my neighbors backyard today, NICE!!! Kept tryin' to hit this squirrel that just didn't what to stay still. finally he disappeared. anyway still great to shot with someone I keep trying to get to buy a 39, he's says he wants one, we'll see. when i talked to him, he had 1 left in stock for $100. when that 1 is gone he said he is going to make some more and put them on the web site with the rest of his scope mounts for a more comperable price. so i'm debating on getting that last one, either way i'm going to get one from him. also Frank, i've been looking into a ruger mark iii or 22/45 and a silencer for it. found some pretty interresting info about getting around the sherriff signature here in our county.

That's what I was waiting for, a price drop. Not that I wouldn't of bought that scope mount for $100, if I had to. Thank you Frank for going out and have someone make a great mount that is going to continue to make one. After shooting your 39a with the mount and scope, as you know I fell in love with the 39's and knowing all the problems you had trying to find something that worked, thank you.
As far as a group of people who have, in some since, known each other for a time wanting to have a familiar place to go to. If that is "ELITIST", then I guess some don't understand the purpose of the club. And that makes me not want to be a part of a unwelcoming forum. And in their own words "OVER THERE" or "THAT OTHER PLACE"!!!

J-Bar, a really nice swap! Look for ammo it will like the best for accuracy. My 4 year old 39a and only rifle, has a scope for Sr eyes. Then a year ago, have special prescription lenses with higher strength for distances. Have loads of fun with your new swap!

That'll allow me to mount the sweet little Leupold 4X rimfire I've got knockin' around on the 39A. Now, if I could just find some 50's reproduction wood for the thing, I could finish the project.

Marlin 39A

I have a model 39A Mountie that I bought when I was 16 in 1967. The serial # is 134XX. What year would this have been made? I bought it used from an old gunsmith who passed away along time ago.

on the serial number should have a letter designator on the front. then check the marlin owners forum and i think. they have a marlin years of manufacture, check the letter against the list there. best of luck and look forward to seeing how old she is.

CB900 (I had a CB1100F way back when, by the way) your question about the wood has got me thinking.

My dad had a model 39a way back when I was a toddler. I remember seeing it before I started school. It was a microgroove rifle, so that puts it some time between '53 and about '59 or so when I can remember seeing it in the gun rack.

As I recall, the wood was dark. I mention that I remember seeing it before it could have possibly been 10 years old because I'm using that memory to base my opinion that the wood did not change colors as it aged.

The last time I saw that rifle was just before it was stolen in 1983.

It was the same dark color 30 years later that I remember it being way back then when I saw it as a child, and when I fired it the first time.

So, here's my comment/question about the wood on old rifles-

The newer Marlins look different. The wood is lighter colored, and shows more grain.

I don't think I've seen a recently made rifle with wood on it that looks like that old walnut did.

In fact, I don't remember seeing any wood any where that looks like those old marlins.

What's up with that?

Is that stain on those old stocks? I don't think so. I think the wood is dark clear through. I've taken stocks off before and it's dark on the inside and where it's inletted. Would they stain the wood inside a drilled hole?

Is it a different variety or species of walnut that's not available any more?

Is it a result of climate changes? I bet the guy that invented the internwebs thinks it is.

What is everybody thinking about this? Is it going to be possible at all to duplicate the stocks on an old Marlin?
