The Marlin 39 Club

I will post a photo (when my daughter shows me how to do it) of my 1940's darker wood Marlin 39A.

The 1966 Mountie that I own has the oiled wood which I will also post. The newer 39's have a Remington look to them with that crappy varnish or urethane finish.

The top rifle is a 1947 39A. Notice the bluing is far superior and the wood is darker. I believe it has a little stain that was added during it's manufacturer. That gun was my dad's after WW2 and was the first gun my brother and I ever shot. My daughters got checked out on it this past summer. The other 39A is a 1966 Mountie. It's wood has a wonderful oil finish to it. The bluing is not nearly as nice as the older/original 39 & 39A's IMHO. My next Marlin will be another 24" barreled 39A from 1966 which I am hoping to have home in about 2 weeks.

39 club "get well" Match for Jag

Howdy Folks,
Just found out a fellow 39 enthusiast, rimfire match honcho and all around great guy has some health issues he's going to battle with early on this year so I figured we could give him a show of support - a get well card so to speak - by shooting a rimfire match.

Some here may recall the battle with lymphoma Jaguar WON back in '06. In November of last year during a routine PET scan something was discovered on his kidney. Subsequent tests revealed it is renal cell carcinoma (rcc). He has an appointment with a surgeon next week to determine how to beat this one too.

So here's the plan.
Target - Using the original 39 match target - a 3x5 card - cut it into a kidney shape. An aiming dot is permitted.

Range - 7 yards and up, whatever is available and safe for you to shoot this time of year.

Course of Fire
- Shoot at least a magazine's worth at it. More is OK on up to a 50 round box's worth. Any position is OK

Scoring The object is to make the BIGGEST continuous hole measured outside to outside.

Eligible Firearms 39 or variation if you got one, but there is an "outlaw" division for any other firearm, BB gun, arrow or thrown spear, tomahawk or knife.

Due Date Lets get this done by February.

When you're done sign and mail them to me for scoring. email [email protected] or PM me for my address. After the match I will bundle them up and send them along to Jag as a GET WELL CARD!

Will do MO, and I hope we get big turn out for this one! So if anyone has some "cb's" you can certainly do this in the backyard (if you got one).

Fella's;

If anybody's interested, there are three 97's for sale locally. I have no financial interest in the guns or the seller. PM me if you'd care to.

Fast Frank checks in from a motel room in Jackson, Mississippi.

I'm on a road trip to get re-certified on some products we service.

Supposed to be an ice storm deluxe tomorrow in Atlanta, and I'm driving to Kennesaw.

Awesome.

Anybody shoot anything today?;)

Drive safely, Frank.

(We experienced that nor'easter blizzard a couple of weeks ago;
snow still on the ground. But today was a balmy 28F; low of 16F tonight.
At sundown, I rode my bike to get groceries wearing my heavy mountaineering gloves. )

No shooting here, yet. But getting closer to getting my 39 shipped out here. I'm psyched!

I picked up a vintage hammer spur and scope base for my 39A on gunbroker for total of $55 shipped from the user morgantrailgunstuff ... she seems to have a bit of pre and post 1983 39A stuff

There are variations, depending on the time period.

Probably my favorite gun :) I believe it was made in 1960, I love it.

Leaving Kennesaw tomorrow at noon, time to go home.

It froze and snowed all week. Not fun. The whole state was shut down.

Here's a gun I saw at Kennesaw Mountain State park. Apparently some fine Southern Boys dug in on top of the mountain and gave the Yankee Invaders a serious headache with that thing.

That's my truck next to it.

Welcome in, Justin. Nice looking rifles. I confess, I've never seen a white stock on a rifle before. What is that? Or is it an illusion cause by glare?

Frank, from this angle, that cannon looks to be .22.

Snow? You call that snow?

We just experienced our second blizzard of the winter,
the upper end of what you got.

Charles, have you considered just adding something like a recoil pad? Obviously, you don't need a recoil pad on a .22, but it would have the desired effect of lengthening the stock.

Why is it so short? Was it cut down, or are you just a large person?

Thant's going to be a problem.
Back in the days when Fajen and Bishop's were in business, they'd make you a special length rifle stock.
I don't know of anyone making Marlin stocks other than standard these days.

Some options:

A really thick stack of recoil pads. They make extension fillers for shotguns, so you could simply build up however many you need.

A wood extension.
Get a piece of good walnut and fit a long piece to the butt and re-attach the butt plate.

A custom stock.
A decent gunsmith or even a good woodworker could simply make you a custom stock with a much longer length of pull.
