Wildlifeforever, that's gotta be one of the best looking stocks I have ever seen on a 39AS.

And a little something to report to the 39 club...
Last night, I stopped off at the WalMart on the way home to pick up some dog food.
Being a creature of habit, I walked past the ammo cabinet so I could look at the empty shelf where the .22 ammo used to be.
I was quite surprised to see maybe 50 boxes or so of Federal 40gr round nose copper plated .22 Long Rifle in the blue 50 round cardboard boxes.
They were reasonably priced at 3.18 each, so I made them unlock the cabinet and I bought the maximum 3 boxes.
That's the first time there has been .22 sitting on the shelf in about a year.
Also, Today was a gun show here in the Woodlands. I went.
Guess what-
I did not see ANY $20 boxes of .22 ammo.
The "Ammo Flippers" have either stopped making money on it, or have not been able to get any.
Regardless of the reasons, I'm hoping that the two above noted situations are indicative of a return of reasonably priced and available ammo for our rifles.
And having said that...
Valentines day is coming! Traditionally, that marks the end of the shoot.
Am I to be the only participant in the "Five Shots On The Dot Challenge"?
Come on guys, Let's go shooting!

Like to be considered a member. Cut my teeth on an 1892 Mountie of my grandads in 1960. It was my woods carry gun for years after that. Later started collecting Marlins, now have about a dozen or so, 1889, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1897, 39m, etc.Catpop

Looks like Valentine's Day has come and gone.
As the only entrant in the Five Shots On The Dot Challenge, I appear to have beaten second place to a pulp.
That's O.K., I enjoyed shooting my rifle regardless of the contest. (Even if I stunk to high heaven)
The weather was nice here in Houston today, and is supposed to be even nicer tomorrow. Maybe Spring Time is coming around finally and this cold winter just might be over.
Heck, with the advent of nicer weather and the re-appearance of ammo we might even get to have another five shot challenge.

I have been a Marlin 39M owner/shooter since Sept 1970 when I was a wee lad of 21. It was the 2nd gun I had ever bought(the first being a Ruger Super Single Six, $72 price tag). I purchased the 39M from thee Ol' Herters Company out of Waseca, Minn. Any one remember them? Always an adventure reading their catalog and a bigger one to travel to the store. The catalog showed a price of $75 for the 39M, so I finally got around to going to the store on a Friday(was around 70 mile drive) and told the guy at the counter what I wanted. The price I was told was $92. I advised the catalog showed $75, he told me if I had come on Thursday that would have been the price, but they had a price increase. Oh well, cheap compared to todays price and the value is well over what I paid for it. I've shot everything from squirrels, rabbits, carp, cans, coon, rats, paper targets, and numerous odds and ends with the 39M. It's still in A1 shape with the exception of a small 'ding' on the forearm. If I had to rely on a gun for a 'survival' weapon, the 39M would be a top pick. My 7 yr old grandson and I had a outing this last fall, shooting several hundred 22 rounds one afternoon. He loved the gun and shot pretty decent after he was able to adjust the sight plane to his size. Someday it may be his. A great gun to handdown!!! Still have the Ruger too!!

Good to hear the old 39 is getting shot by a beginner. I have long believed it's what .22s are really for.

I went to the gunsmith who will be working on my 39a and he said that the pitting wasn't too bad and the rifle should look very good when he's done. Hopefully it won't be too much longer so I can take it out when it gets warmer. He suspects that he'll be done with it by then.

Another with 39 history questions. I've just broken mine out after years of quietly waiting. It belonged to my Father, who was never one to let the truth get in the way of a good story - he claimed to have purchased it from a rodeo trick shooter. It travelled with him over much of the US, The Yukon, and Alaska while he was with the US Coast and Geodetic Survey.
It bears the number 7166. I've done some reading that suggests being careful in selection of ammunition, so answers to that, and approx. year of manufacture would be nice. I've been to the Marlin history site, but it won't take numbers from the likely time period that this was made, so... Thank you in advance.

Had the Marlin below (with it's big brothers) for over a year, kept meaning to join this club but never got around to it. It's a 1983, I believe. Saw a shop locally with a perch-belly model (no clue on age) for $375 OTD. I think I might get a 2nd 39A .
