The Maryland AWB of 2007

Nicely done.

Frankly I think it's pretty weak sauce he suggested I was "attacking" him. He seems pretty thin skinned for somebody working in radio--I simply pointed out that hey, you're misinformed. You're saying things that simply are NOT true.

We'll see if he writes back. Maybe we'll even get some airtime.

Yea, I am interested to see if he gets after me for trying to help him get his facts straight.

Guido,
Excellent letter and response. I will suggest that you add that machine guns are already banned. At least that is close enough to the truth without confusing non gun owners.

Yeah, even though they're really "tightly regulated" and not "banned", the difference between the two is hard to explain to gun enthusiasts, let alone people misinformed enough to think an AR15 is a "machine gun".

I'll try to listen to Ed's show today to see if they discuss it. For a guy who talks like a tough guy on the air, frankly I find Maynard's thin skinned reaction to our emails pretty sad.

That's what we've been reduced to in this country--someone pointing out that you have the facts garbled is "attacking" you.

Sigh...:scrutiny:

Mike,

I had that exact thought but I figured for the sake of brevity that I not muddy the waters too much. If by some chance I get a favorable response and he is open to facts, I'm going to make sure to get that bit in there.

I have to say that I am really disappointed with Ed Norris. He seems like a "don't take sh*t" kinda guy. I don't know if he agrees with Maynard or if he is just doing what his boss wants. I wish I was able to speak with him directly, because I think we've seen where Maynard stands.

Helmet,

That seems like a typically response, when you being up facts that don't fit in an Anti's preconceived notions, they dismiss it and then question the size of your manhood.

Agreed. A lot of people are so thin skinned that if you don't go out of your way to be polite in disagreeing with them, like Guido did, they take it as a personal attack. Personally, I'd be interested to see exactly what the other people who emailed them said. Given that Helmetcase's comments were taken as personal attacks, I'd bet that a lot of what they took personally was nothing more than stating the facts.

btw, am I the only one who finds it funny that a guy named "Maynard" seems to be such a tool?:neener: :D

I had a thought. Since "assult weapon are supposed to be High Poweredinstruments of death" would it help to make up two dummy rounds? One of a 5.56 and the other for a 30-06 or even 300 win mag. Hold them up as a visual reference of a High Powered killer and benign hunting bullet. Or how about a 7.62 and 308? One is an evil gun cartridge, the other is a hunting cartridge. Cosmetics makes no diffence in what the gun is used for, its the persons intent. Visual presentation seems to have a good impact on people.

a better visual image would be a poster of a 14 year old girl shooting high power

Thats an interesting thought Mike.

I wonder how many Antis could correctly pick out the "high powered military bullet" from the lowly hunting round. I'd bet that a fair number would take a look at a 5.56 and a 30-06 and grab the .30 as the "instrument of death" every time. Rightfully so that the 30-06 is more powerful, but I'd bet they be surprised when you explain that they picked the hunting round and not the deadly high powered military round.

If the person actually knew what they were doing, and grabbed the 5.56 because its "for an assault rifle", they'd have a heck of a time explaining how that puny round is more powerful than the 30-06 hunting round when they are sitting side by side and the 30-06 is significantly larger.

I'm hoping that I got that point across to Maynard, but I highly doubt that.

EDIT: Awesome pictures Harry. Where is that if you don't mind me asking? It looks like a pretty big range.

I got another email from Maynard that was a bit more friendly, we joked about how bad the Red Hot Chili Peppers are these days and that I agree with his assessment that they're pretty boring anymore...and he smiled and agreed.

I made it clear my intention is not to ATTACK him or Ed Norris, but to EDUCATE them.

We need to keep hammering that point. Hopefully one of us gets some airtime on their show.

Oleg, you should do this.

In a slight addition to my previous post, I realize that the 30-06 was originally a military round for most of WWI through Korea.

However, most people associate it more with a hunting round nowadays than a former military round. So I guess it is "a deadly military round per se," but I think you guys understand the point I was trying to make in terms of modern "assault rifles." Just don't want anyone to hammer me on the military history side of the 30-06.

IMHO, playing the "which one is more scarey" game with someone afraid of all bullets gets you no where.

They need to see that the sport is as benign as golf.

I bet Gerald Ford would have been less dangerous with an AR-15 than he was with a Golf Club :D

Not to Get Off Topic.....

but I bet that Teddy Kennedy would be less dangerous with the .30-30 he feared, than he was with his car....

Back on topic: nice letters guys!

Michael

Reminder emails sent

Just fired off a round of reminder/thank you emails to the committee..Wrote up both a pro and an anti version. Both pretty similar, but I think the slight differences are good ones. Lemme know whatcha think.

Pro Letter
Dear Senator __

Thank you very much for your time and careful attention to those who gathered this week to testify in regards to SB - 43. I appreciate the effort you've given to understanding the issue at hand, and the feelings of those involved. I wish to remind you that your support is still desperately needed in the matter, and a vote against the bill is a vote for the continued freedom of the lawful citizens of Maryland. if there is anything I can answer or clarify for you on the matter I will be more than happy to do so.

Once again, many thanks for your consideration. Please feel free to add me to your campaign mailing list in the future.

Yours,
Kingpin008
Howard County.

Anti Letter
Dear Senator __

I would like to thank you for your careful and patient attention to the testimony of those who gathered earlier this week in regards to SB - 43. I am sure you are aware of how delicate this issue can be, and how desperate the need for support is even now. I wish to remind you that a vote against this proposed bill is a vote for the continued freedom of the law-abiding citizens of Maryland, and will send a message to the rest of our government to support bills that will change our state for the better, instead of demonizing innocent citizens. I appreciate your desire to ensure the safety and freedoms that all Marylanders enjoy, and I sincerely hope that your vote is able to reflect a further committment to your constituents. Please feel free to contact me if there is anything I might be able to clarify or answer for you on this matter.

Yours,

Kingpin008
Howard County

Depending on what time we all expect the outcome tomorrow (and what time I wake up, heh) I'll send another round to make sure everybody on that committee knows we're still watching what they do on the subject.

And by the way, what time can we expect word on the final vote? It was supposed to be announced Friday, right?

I'll be returning from Muscat, Oman tomorrow...

and have been following this with great interest. I hope there is good news for us all. Many thanks for all the hard work put forth by the THR freedom fighters. BTW, I asked the Oman police to let me have a rifle for a demo I was doing in the class, they gave me a Vietnam era Colt M16, pretty neat. Pics to follow.

Any Updates?!??

Just wondering if anyone knows when this is being voted on???

Will we know for sure if something is going to happen today?

Based on what I threw together for my testimony on tuesday, I wrote a paper to discredit CeaseFire Maryland's "every 48 hours" study.

Would you all mind taking a look at it and let me know what you think? Feel free to comment on anything: grammar, spelling, typos, wording, facts, etc.

(Oh, and even though it gives permission to copy and distrinute, I'd appreciate it if you didn't just yet, until I make any last minute edits. I'll post the final draft here in a few days, tops.)

Edited to say that this can now be considered the final version. Copy and distrbute at will.

I think the vote is today, we should be ok if Raskin holds to his word to not approve the bill in its current form and Brochin holds as well. IIRC, that is.

I finally got through to WHFS and Maynard, they gave me about five minutes on air.

I did ok, but forgot to mention that we're NOT talking about machine guns here.

Archangel,
Nicely done. I'm going to link to your post here on my site.

Feel free to use the anti-"Every 48 Hours" post from my site as well. :)

Arch, thats PERFECT!

Thanks for doing all that work.

Now we have some SOLID ammo against their myths.

It should be sent to Sen Jacobs and ALL of the Judicial Committee Members AND the sponsors of the bill.

I believe that there is a good chance for this doc to help nail the case for Raskin and convert him somewhat....he was at least responsive....if we can keep feeding him good info he'll have good reason to doubt the drivel that the Brady Bunch keep feeding them.

Some of them like Lennett are too far gone to consider coming back on their positions as it would likely have disastrous political implications but this is great!

Archangel, that looks good. One small suggestion I have is to point out that the "study" (along with just about every other anti-gun "study") is NOT peer reviewed, and therefore their research design, logic, and conclusions have not been analyzed or verified by impartial third parties. For anyone who may be familiar with research, the lack of peer review is a HUGE red flag to be skeptical of the study.
