The most creative anti to date...

After thinking on it a little, I'm guessing she views "guns" as having a will, and being able to cause someone to do something... It's not the person to blame - it's the gun. Hence, only criminals should be afflicted with them.

It's really hard to reach some folks, since they -know- that owning or touching a firearm immediately transforms the "victim" into a criminal... That's one of the major things we need to counter - the belief that "guns make good people bad."

That really is funny...I wonder if she votes.

This kind of stuff makes me think we should look into competency tests at the voting booths.

If people are worried about denying voters of different ethnicity, all we'd have to do is just put a really big, pist off guy that threatens people next to the voting booth and see who says "the police will be here any minute and they'll protect me". OR we could put a armed cop behind some of the voting booths and tell everyone it's for their protection and see who votes in them

"I think criminals should have them rather than us, because at least the criminals will be caught when they use their guns."

After spending lo, these many months on the Brady Bingo Blog, and Huffington Post, I have to say that that is THE dumbest single line I've heard.

The one about 'knives are better because they stab only who they want' is a close second.

My previous favorite was from a Huffnut. He said something to the effect that he would rather die, than have anyone other than a "uniformed" LEO defend him with a gun.

She hasn't given you her real reason, bloodedsky. The lame arguments from utility that she gave you look suspiciously made-up-on-the-spot, even if she made them up years ago. She might not admit her real reasons to herself, either. No, I can't guess what they might be.

In other news, we might have a new leader in the ongoing "What planet is this person from?" contest. This contestant comes from one of our favorite categories, Difficulty with Time, Space and Biology:

Another one in the same neighborhood covered her daughters' eyes when she saw the four bucks I had hanging on the wall and then after an anti gun/hunting tirade concluded with "Well at least they died as a family!"

Words fail me... :D

"I think criminals should have them rather than us, because at least the criminals will be caught when they use their guns."

Her feelings are clear. EVERYONE should be "caught" when using their guns, because to her, using guns for ANYTHING should be a crime.

I have found all of your comments hilarious. :) Thank you for posting them.

Some of them, however, were a tad bit mean--those concerning the inadvisability of her breeding, for instance, or those about her being stupid. As for the first charge, I happen to know the woman's daughter pretty well, and she's actually staunchly pro-2A and shoots regularly (go figure)--so in this case, the apple actually bounced away from the tree; so maybe it's a good thing my neighbour decided to pass her genes along.

As for the charge of stupid, my neighbour is actually very level-headed about many subjects; is well educated and well read; has many interests and hobbies; is extraordinarily kind to animals (she has owned 8 cats at one time, owing to a lack of other available homes for the cats); has a wicked sense of humour; and is, in general, a good person.

Until it comes to guns.

When approached with the subject of guns, she turns into a maniac. It is truly the sole area where I would consider her to be heart-stoppingly stupid (and I have known this woman for years).

Her comments were so wild--and, I have to say, they are the first of their kind I have ever heard--that I had to post them on THR.

I had to give you a bit of the other side of this woman. That having been said.... Fire away! There's so much great material there; I can't wait to hear more from all of you. :)

Well, I used to have a neighbor in my apartment building who freaked over the gun thing...

Then when we had an urban outdoorsman move into the building's basement, she's knocking on my door asking me to do something. Why? I had a gun.

I think that some of 'em also think that they're all-purpose tools - i.e., they make you bulletproof, work to evict bums, etc., etc...

I told her to call other guys with guns...

Made some assumptions of my own, didn't I?

True, but my point is that is what she thought, and that is likely not what happened.

I see this a lot. It is programming. Turn her brain on and see what happens.

Fear is one hell of a drug.

The neighbor said, "At least with a knife, you're killing who you want to kill and you're not accidentally taking out innocent bystanders with your knife thrusts."

I guess you didn't get around to mentioning to her that the UK bans knives too.

I agree, blaming the gun is like blaming the spoon for making Rosie Odonnell fat.

I put some thought into this and viewed it in this light. I "use" my gun weekly hopefully in a safe and law abiding manner in a facility so designated to do so, I don't feel I need to be caught like a criminal. Self defense aside I view shooting sports the same as golf, basketball or anyother activity people engage in during free time, in my opinion whether your drive a golf ball or get nothing but net or hit the bullseye you are threading the needle and it is a skill set that must be learned and hopefully one day mastered. And for the record I have friends who have been beaten with golf clubs and a baseball bat but don't know any shooting victims, so some folks may need to review their logic.

None of which is indicative of intelligence.

You're right, Erebus. None of the above is indicative of intelligence-- regarding firearms.

I didn't start the thread to point out how stupid this person is overall, because she isn't stupid overall. She's very intelligent.

I posted this because her logic regarding guns is stupid (absent, actually), and I have honestly never heard an anti approach the subject of firearms in quite the way that she did.

Let's remember, we all have a blind spot. :) Spots such as hers tend to be particularly palatable to one's sense of humour.

There is something that really frosts me. If she eats steaks or pork chops, goes out for Col. Cluck chicken, etc., how did she think the food got there? What is the difference whether the animal is killed in a slaughterhouse or by a hunter? It was still killed. The only people who have any business making such comments are vegans (those who use no animal products whatsoever). They are still wrong, but at least their arguments are not rooted in hypocrisy.

"At least with a knife, you're killing who you want to kill and you're not accidentally taking out innocent bystanders with your knife thrusts."

I take two issues with this one. 1) I doubt I'd ever WANT to kill anyone. I may have to and in that case I will, after exhausting all reasonable options given the situation. but I don't ever WANT to kill anyone.
2)If I ever do have to kill someone with my gun, there will be no innocent bystanders hit. Thats why I practice with my weapons. I want to be able to hit my target and nothing else.

BTW, does this neighbor know you own guns? Is she likely to hear a balloon pop at your next party and call the cops to "catch" you using your guns illegally?

...
Smile and nod boys, smile and nod.
Don't waste your time trying to convince her. She's beyond reason by now; the only thing that can convince her is if she experiences a crime. Which I hope she does not.
