Mighty fine looking Target Model, carefull how you stuff that in your kilt, them barrels get hot when you shoot them and that Target Sight might do some damage as well!

Do you think I'll be a bit undergunned with the .44 against haggis? I think I'll chance it.

I believe I would rather shoot it than eat it. I am sure 30 grains of FFF and a 452 round ball will put down most haggis.

I gotta agree with 72coupe, those .452 lead balls will do severe damage to most mortal haggis.

I prefer using 200 grain conicals on the "Zombie Haggis" however.

aye Jim, that's how I felt about my sheriff model when it was new. But I couldn't wait to feel those curves, spin the cylinder, and check out the fit and finish. Got finger printed muy pronto.

I ordered a NA but my box says "Steel Sherrif" and it don't say NA or Steel Sherrif on my gun.

Hi Jim,

The 5.5 inch barrel on revolvers is termed a "Sherriffs' Model" of most Cap & Ball Revolvers by the Italian gun makers. The "New Army" designation originally differientiated the earlier Remington "Beales" revolver from the later Remington production model. Nowadays most of these terms are applied haphazardly in the best Madison Avenue traditions of marketing and advertising.

We kind o' got two church 'families' and we're pretty involved in both this weekend. 'sides, still got my grambaby here and when i do wipe that '58 down for the first time i wanna be able to treat 'er like my grambaby...undivided attention
This comin weekend is the annual birthday picnic tho and i WILL make smoke with 'er saturday.

This is my entry. 1858 was bought in kit form about 30 years ago. Since then the cold bluing has worn off and has not been shot for about 15 years( to amount to anything.) Getting back into shooting/reloading/casting boolits again since I have found a range about 20 miles away that has all shooting capabilities. Shoots really well with 30 grains with 3F.
The ball ram was the only thing that came aready blued. LOL

I like that a lot. Looks like an aged original that had to have the loading lever replaced.

My wife would kill me if she saw me with vinager and Blumb brown near our new NMA. It still would not look as "good" as 30 years of aging though.

Tim, i've heard, but cannot vouch for,that used coffee grounds can help achieve that same look.
Maybe some research can verify the verasity of this and you could make the ram and base pin match the gun.

I also noticed that she has no bolt drag at all.

Swweet! Just make sure all the little crevices are clean of factory oil ( I've read that they use olive oil, FWIW). The wood in the handles will clean up with just a good wipe.

My 5.5 shot about 4" low at 25 yds when I first took it out using the .451 balls the factory recommends. I was irritated at first, then tried .454 RB. POI came up to just 1" low. Windage is right on. I'm still debating myself whether to file the front sight. For just 1" I might just learn to live with it, maybe adjust myself before I grind on the gun.

I have just taken up boolit-molding, but I haven't had a chance to try out my new 200 gr conicals yet. Many people seem to prefer the .454 out of those 3 load choices. Maybe I'll get that mould, too.

You can put me in that .454" Club as well. Not knowing what it would like to shoot I tried some .451" Round Balls first and had pretty much the same results as splattergun did. Luckily I had a partial box of Speer .454" Round Balls laying in the corner of one of my shooting bags and found that those seemed to be just the thing for my Pietta 5.5" 1858. Once I got my C&R License and an account with Midway and Mr. Potter I scored the .454" 200 grain Lee Aluminum conical bullet mold. Haven't looked back since.
