I sold off my other 4+1 shot 870 HD to my step father a few months back and couldn't shake the shotgun bug. I recntly purchased another 870 HD last week but, this one is the 6+1 round version. I decided to put a hundred rounds of number 7-1/2 birdshot through it along with 6 rounds of 2-3/4in 00 buckshot through it today at the range to see how it would pattern. Lets just say I'm tired and sore. The gun did have a few problems extracting some of the winchester birdshot cases out of the chamber. My friend at the range thought is was the action but I decided it could be due to the ammo. I kept some of the spent cases that were a bear to extract and tried to duplicate the malfunction. One thing I noticed about the cases that I did have a problem with was that they had a peculiar bulge around the rim. I didn't think it was the action at all especially when the extractor ripped a piece of the rim off when trying to extract the case. I just think that the cheap wal-mart wichester value pack ammo would occasionally swell in the chamber and be a real bitch to get out.

It may be the ammo, try different brands to see. Once you can run 200 rounds of your load of choice through it sans glitches, your shotgun is ready for HD. Run more ammo to ensure you are also.

Sounds like a dirty chamber to me.

Wisps of 0000 steel wool around a bronze brush, if you have cordless drill save some elbow grease. Easiest, fastest way to clean a chamber, bore and choke - always leave a choke installed to protect threads.

Plastic buildup gets worse with heat, shell is difficult to remove , and the extractor will gouge case head.

Brush around extractor and the notch where extrator fits in bbl, breechface, the chamber - This is where most gun related problems occur.
