Top 10 Manly guns

Seems everyone here equates manly with macho. Just for s&gs, allow me to temporarily take this discussion in a different direction, and with that said:

The top ten THINKING MAN's guns:

10. Mosin Nagant M44
Dirt cheap, powerful rifle and ammo. Handy length to deploy quickly. Inexpensive enough to own several to hand out to family, friends, etc. if things ever get real bad.

9. SKS
For a lot of the same reasons as the M44, but this one is more effective in most scenarios because it's semiautomatic. Not as cheap as they used to be and rising quickly, but still one of the best ratios of $ to firepower around.

8. 12g Pump shotgun
Puts meat on the table from squirrel to waterfowl to large game. There's not much in North America that this incredibly versatile firearm can't bring down, including 2 legged animals in your house in the middle of the night. Should have both sporting and SD length barrels and magazine tubes, and a slug barrel is an extra plus.

7. Pocket pistol in at least .380
When your macho friends have to leave their .45s in the car or look completely out of place dressed to conceal such a weapon in some situations, you can remain armed and prepared.

6. .22 rifle, bolt or semiauto
Every self respecting man has the ability to introduce new shooters including women and children into the sport. Also, how can you NOT have a gun that you can shoot hundreds of rounds with in an afternoon for the price of seeing a bad movie? Very accurate and puts food on the table too, and dispatches critters up to the two legged variety quickly with careful shot placement.

5. Sub2000 9mm or 40 S&W carbine
A small, foldable, very light and maneuverable carbine that shares magazines with your pistol is a smart addition to your self defense planning. It can be stored under your car seat or even worn folded and concealed under an open shirt or jacket ready to fire in 3 seconds flat. No it won't shoot through brick walls, trees, or body armor, but it will extend your range and practical accuracy over your pistol many fold in an altercation. Considering the type of threat one will most likely face in a SHTF "get home" scenario along with its ability to be carried concealed but almost ready to fire and the ability to accept 33rd magazines, it is an ideal "trunk gun" to keep in your vehicle to give you some serious firepower in case the worst happens.

4. 9mm or 40 S&W compact Glock (G19/26 or G23/27)
A high capacity, reliable and concealable pistol is most likely your first defense when things go down. Although the XD, M&P, some 1911s and others can make for an adequate alternative they aren't supported by the Sub2000 carbine.

3. High accuracy .308 bolt action rifle w/mil dot scope
Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Learn the mil-dot ranging technique and exterior ballistics of your chosen load and with some training, practice, and skill be effective out to 800yds with quality match ammo. An excellent bang for buck setup is the Savage 10 or 110FP with accutrigger topped with the Super Sniper mil-dot scope.

2. Saiga .308 in 16" barrel length
Sometimes you just have to turn cover into concealment. This is an excellent battle rifle substitute but without all the bulk, length, and price. While others are still struggling to get their H&K, CETME, AR-10, M14, etc. out from behind the car seat (or to afford one in the first place) your compact powerhouse is drilling through those concrete blocks or oak trees into your unlucky adversaries, or into their engine blocks stopping their charge or getaway. Undoubtedly one of the best bang for buck deals in firepower anywhere, the $350 Saiga .308 is built on heavier than normal AK receivers in the famous Izmash soviet rifle factory and also sports a heavy barrel delivering much greater accuracy than typical AK47s. 2 moa accuracy out of the box is not uncommon with match grade ammunition, however the triggers are not the best making this level of accuracy dependent on a very good shooter or readily available replacement trigger assemblies.

1. AR-15
Above all else, the thinking man needs a weapon he can depend on that is versatile enough to be used in almost any situation. The AR-15's excellent handling, ergonomics, accuracy, high capacity and modularity make it an extremely effective weapon in more scenarios than any other. It can be an effective long range weapon, and it can also be an effective entry or short range assault weapon. It's excellent ergonomics and sights give it advantages over the AK in short range gun battles, and it easily outclasses an AK at distances beyond 200 yards. It is a very reliable weapon if given a reasonable amount of care. Yes, thinking men are expected to maintain their weapons!

It took until the 54th post to even mention the .500 S&W.
Hello, I mentioned it and I was number 28.
And the S&W 500 is not a sissy gun. Unlike the Deagle, you have to have balls to shoot it. Especially with full loads. A pistol with the power of a bolt-action rifle? Jammin'!

can I substitute a mossberg 500 cruiser for the 870? ah I'm gonna get an 870 anyway. and my glock is on lay-a-way

As for shotguns the 1887/1901 Lever-action and the 1897 pump-action are high on my list

as for pistols the 1911 and high power are at the top and the GLOCK and Luger get honorable mention the former for reliability and the latter for elegance and style

for Rifles the SMLE, M1/M1A/M14, AK-47 and the AR-15 in no particular order and of course the Mosin-Nagants and Mausers get Honorable mention

I'm surprised no Lever ACtions made the list. I'd put a lever-action winchester or Marlin in place of the pansy crap plastic Glock any day.

only two mentions for the FAL...mebbe three...and there IS no other truer man-gun out there that went against the AK...

I am 4 out of 10...was 6 but need to rectify that situation...soon will be 5 with the purchase of a nice Block. :D

i think i can live with that list. but i would remove glock. its doesnt strike me as manly.

edit: as above, put the big loop lever action in there!

M44-feh. If I'm not mistaken, these were used mostly by REMF troops and wasn't even issued until the little disputes outside of Satlingrad and Moscow were settled, the real men carried the 91/30s and PPsHs. I would agree with a 91/30 on the list but not the m44. If its place on the list is justified by muzzle blast and recoil, its a girl's gun compared to a M95 steyr-manlicher- a gun that M44 shooters only dream of being manly enough to shoot:neener:

Can I redeem my 10% manliness if I have more than ten of one of the weapons on the list? But none of the others? Seven .45 ACP and three 10 mm...

Oh, the shame of it all...

I gather alot of you consider the glock as some kind of manly handgun. I'm not impressed with it. It does have a use though. At tupperware parties for show and tell.

6 1/2 of the 10?

By my count, I have 6 1/2 of the 10 - preferring the Swede to the Swiss.

I have a SMLE, GLOCK, a Swedish Mauser rather than a Swiss, S&W 629, AR15, 1911, Remington 870, so I am feeling fairly manly. :)

manliness

the k31 is in no way related to a Mauser. the action is arguably far superior.

Well, no, but I was desperately trying to raise my manliness by .5 of a point, using the fact that they are both bolt action military rifles from countries that start with SW.*

Sort of like a toupee, a comb-over or a trophy wife. :p

*and frankly, most school kids today probably don't know the difference between Sweden and Switzerland!

No particular order:

1. Double-barrel 10 or 12 gauge coach gun (Lupara for the Sicilians).

2. Winchester 1876 in .45-60 WCF, .45-75 WCF, or .50-95 Express.

3. Colt New Service .45 Colt with a two inch barrel, custom grips, bobbed hammer, and the front of the trigger guard cut out. The inimitable "Fitz" custom revolver. J. Henry FitzGerald carried one of these in each of his front pants pockets!

4. Thompson Submachinegun - any model in .45 ACP, but the one's with the removeable stock and drum magazines are the most manly.

5. M1 Garand. "The finest battle implement ever devised." - Gen. Geo. Patton

6. Webley Mk 1 through Mk 5 .455 revolver.

7. Colt M1911/M1911A1 .45 ACP.

8. SKS in 7.62X39mm.

9. Merwin & Hulbert Pocket Army in .44 WCF. (You can keep your Colts and Schofields, boys!)

10. A Colt Detective Special or S&W M10 with a 2 inch barrel in .38 Special. Hey! All those PI's in the movies and TV can't be wrong, can they?

My top ten manliest guns

1. M1 Garand
Taking first place is the mighty M1 Garand. As General George S Patton called it, "The greatest battle implement ever devised". The M1 Garand is a full blown combat rifle with maximum range of 3,500 yards and maximum effective range of 437 yards.

2. Winchester 94 in 30.30
# 1 rated deer hunting rifle with good brush busting effects.

3. Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun
High capacity 12 gauge pump shotgun, economic, reliable & lethal.

4. Smith & Wesson model 29 44 magnum
Dirty harry used one, need I say more?

5. Colt Python .357 Magnum
The Cadillac of handguns. Hand honed & fitted by Colt, very smooth action.

6. Colt Single Action Army .45 LC
"The Peacemaker"

7. Colt Model 1911A1 .45 ACP
It was designed by John M. Browning, and was the standard-issue side arm for the United States armed forces from 1911 to 1985. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

8. Glock 20 10MM
High capacity semi auto in 10MM Feared by liberals and nearly indestructible

9. Smith & Wesson 500
Based on S&W's largest frame, the X-Frame, the Model 500 is the world's most powerful production revolver.

10. .338 Lapua
For military extreme long-range anti-personnel purposes, the .338 Lapua is king. Even the .50BMG falls short (Do to accuracy problems with current ammo). This caliber is not recommended for Law Enforcement.
