Back on the main topic - I've always kind of assumed that König/Thorvald was largely a figment of Soviet propaganda. Although stranger things have happened, the idea of a dramatic duel between the cold and calculating Nazi super-sniper and the good-hearted Russian hero seems a little...cinematic. No firm evidence to cite here, though.
He wouldn't have used an M27, as he was a guardsman. He said he used an M28, though details are somewhat sketchy re. whether he used the 28/30 upgrade at any point. Iron sights for sure, either way. He was a little guy, and would set himself up in a little depression in the snow, just like a snowshoe hare hunkering down.
