tough situation

I am sitting here thinking that maybe he needs a non-judgmental friend. Someone that will just accept him with his warts and all rather than someone that is trying to change him or worse willing to turn him in to the police.

He is rational, has considered the consequences of his behavior and is comfortable with his choice. I'm sure under today's standards all of our founding fathers needed counseling for rebelling against the reasonable laws of the Crown.

There is a fine line between being judgmental and caring. That line is not easy to distinguish sometimes. To me the op sounds more worried about his friend than looking down on his actions. None of us though are in a position to say if the guy is rational or not. We have not met him or have nearly enough info to make that call

Very true.

Becoming a good listener can be difficult to learn. It is also a way to show how much you care for somebody.

As for being rational there is nothing to suggest otherwise. If his choosing to break the law is a sign of being otherwise he has lots of company...just look at how many people drive today. And in his case we know how well criminals obey no firearms laws and signs.

Like I said before...in today's society every one of our founding fathers would be considered in need of serious mental health intervention.

He's lucky to have a friend like you. Let's just that Friends don't friends go over the line. Keep being a positive person to him. Maybe he'll catch on sooner rather than later.
