Trump to Sessions: Ban Bumpstocks

Ok - I'll stand strong and refuse to give an inch - especially on bump fire devices. Remind me how much my courage helped in a couple months
At least you would have stood firm for something rather than capitulate. That’s something to be proud of.

Every time there is a tragedy and the left screams “Gun control!!” We start thinking of ways to compromise. “Well how about we offer xyz in exchange for abc?” This way we (might) get something in return for giving them what they want. But do we not realize that they aren’t the ones giving us a death by a thousand cuts? It’s us cutting our own wrists! We know the end goal. It’s been said here a thousand times. Total repeal of the 2A which will be followed by a totalitarian state. And yet here we are, trying to compromise because they’re whining and screaming and we feel bad.

We also preach that we should get young people involved in the shooting sports and teach them about the 2A and what it really means. And in the next breath we want to restrict those same people from owning firearms because some psycho kid with a terrible home life went on a killing spree. Unless of course they’re going to go to war to play world police. Then it’s ok. But when you come back, “Nope, sorry KID, you’re not old enough to buy that AR or Glock. You haven’t lived long enough.”

And we talk about spineless republicans in Congress!?! Some people need to look in the mirror.

All the rah rah we'll NEVER give an inch stuff sounds great but if you don't feel the winds of change coming you're not paying attention. I agree that it's a slippery slope and that this will be a death by a thousand cuts. That said I don't think it's a bad idea to try to get while we're forced to give. If you think affirmations and tough talk are going to beat the demographic swing that's coming, more power to ya

Already lost have we?

I hear the winds, I hear them as I stand on this slope with a rope of confidence. It is tied to the rock of logic. I hold it and call to the half-hearted, down in the chasm, to steel their resolve. I have bandages of reasoned solutions, because we all bleed together. Fatalistic, broken "why bother"s are the talk of the duplicitous.

I like my hobbies and won't give them up. Not hiking, not kayaking. I won't give up frisbees or motorcycles. I won't just stop using swimming pools because some "person" finds them dangerous.

I hope many have the strength to do the same. And a voice to speak it to those that would hear otherwise.

Did you really just imply that those politicians (grey hairs) who inacted the ‘68 GCA, the NFA of ‘86, the magazine restrictions in ‘94 and the gun control in California know more than we do so we should be quiet? Or is it the grey hairs that voted for those politicians and presidents who enacted those acts that I’m supposed to listen to and seek wisdom from? I would think I wouldn’t want to be categorized with those that voted that way.

NFA happened in 34. GCA in 68. Those politicians were elected by the people. That's how it works in this country. The people that voted for them weren't all grey hairs. You can vote in this country when you're 18. Check it out. Put yourself in any category you want. It's a free country.

I don't think we're on the same page. I don't WANT to increase the age. I think it'll do absolutely nothing. I don't want ANY new restrictions and I'm pretty much an advocate of rolling back any current restrictions you can think of.

I don't point to compromise because of guilt or because I think any of the proposals are going to be effective. While I feel bad about these shootingss I don't feel guilty at all. I simply think that regardless of how "we" feel change is coming whether we want it or not. My version of compromise would be to give something up that I think is on the way out anyway regardless of what we want (age increase) in exchange for things that I'm increasingly doubtful well get otherwise (reciprocity/SBR/suppressors etc)

To each his own though. I've got a feeling your firm stance and my desire for compromise have no real world bearing

Yep. Got my year wrong. And you missed the point entirely. But it’s fine. Ok. I put myself into the “Shall not be infringed” category. Doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 108.

im a single issue voter, I will not be voting for trump next election, solely from this one act...i voted to nominate ted cruz.
couldn't trust trump being a near life long Democrat . he has caved on every issue he ran on.

banning bumpfire stocks is a giant open door for banning all semiauto's in the future.

Hopefully everyone doesn’t share that sentiment.

Edit: After SBR’s, cans, and reciprocity, what else would you want? My point being that eventually, we’re going to run out of things to want and they won’t. Because they only want one thing.....

Shootings WILL continue to occur. The left will continue to scream. And we will have nothing left to bargain for. And then what?

I seriously hope that this is a satirical post and I am just not getting the joke. I can be a bit slow that way sometimes.

I have been a member of THR for almost 13 years. I think I am past the 18 - 21 bracket just a bit...

So why are you dissing grey hairs?

Membership in an online forum doesn't count.

The Hughes Amendment must go.
If a deal is on the table, Hughes Amendment repeal is a lot more relevant as an offset to bump stocks being made illegal than silencers or national reciprocity. The reason is that Congress has to decide what to do about existing bump stocks. Of course, they could be made contraband instantly. (With compensation?) But it's more likely that they would be grandfathered in in some way. From what Trump wrote, it looks like they would be treated as machine guns. If so, grandfathering them means that the registry would be opened in some kind of amnesty. But what do you register? The bump stock (an unserialized plastic accessory) or the underlying gun (for example, an AR-15) that the bump stock would be used with? And if you register the underlying gun, why not do a proper conversion and drill the "third hole"? It would be easier administratively to declare an across-the-board amnesty and allow registration of any unregistered machine guns, including newly made ones. Or simply repeal the Hughes Amendment and let people Form 1 them.

After all, bump stocks were a workaround because of the unavailability of legal machine guns. And, they were totally unregulated. If legal machine guns were available at reasonable prices -- even though regulated under the NFA -- bump stocks would disappear, as being unnecessary (except maybe in certain states).

What issues has he caved on?? Start naming them. He couldn't get Gorsuch through because of the 60 vote requirement.

We should have never lost SBR/SBS, suppressors, or have to deal with being licensed to conceal carry... but we do and thankfully a number of states have gone to permitless carry and in shall issue states people should continue to support legislatures who support permitless carry.

But nationally it's a completely different story. Politicians from one side of the nation are going to be voting on laws that affect the other side of the nation and like it or not, bump stock legislation is coming. It may not be in 2018 or 2019 or 2020, but someday it is going to come.

The question is do you want to be right or do you want to be smart?

The right thing is to plant a foot and say "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!" and the smart thing is to go to the table, make a deal for bump stocks for reciprocity and school security or something else.

Yeah, plus even with all the registered machine guns that were around before Hughes, none of them were being used in crimes. If the background check for machine gun registry is that intense that they could find out that you stole candy from a baby when you were 8 years old, then there's no reason for the registry to be closed at all.

Make a case for that and educate people that machine guns were legal up until 1986 and still are in some states today. It will change a few people's mind a little.

Let me be clear: Stonewalling ("no compromise") is usually the correct strategy in confronting antigun proposals. But if the antis have the required votes in both houses of Congress, plus a President who's willing to sign their bill, then you have to start negotiating, or you lose everything by default. This is called counting the votes, and the NRA-ILA has traditionally been very good at it. If the NRA signals a deal on bump stocks, then that should be a good indication of what's going on.

Juvenile insults usually don't get a comeback, but I am just in the mood...

I am dissing gray hairs who want to sacrifice the rights of younger citizens because it's the easy way to capitulate.

How old do you think I am?

I agree- online forum membership does not count for anything.

Sure- Let's compare DD214s and security clearance history sometime over coffee. What have you been doing to serve and defend the country recently? I was doing it today and will work on it again tomorrow.

(Content removed off topic politics)

But I will stop there as this is off topic and we stay away from politics (mods delete if you feel it needs to be). I was and still am a Cruz supporter and appreciate his stance on the constitution. However, for the most part Trump has been pretty good. But, we cannot hold back on holding him to his promises and he campaigned on being a staunch 2A supporter.

Catch up time.

Gorsuch is on the supreme court. One of Trumps finer moments.

Trump hasn't really done anything to substantially undermine our RKBA........yet.

He's playing a good hand so far.

Bump stocks are just a concession to the mob with pitch forks and torches that is gathering on his front lawn.

The next concession will be the 21 age limit for AR's.

Repeal and replace Obamacare???????????? He never got a bill to sign. Where was the bill did he refuse to sign it?
No he didn't because Congress never passed anything.

Amnesty hasn't even been discussed yet for these Dreamers.

Read up on how government works before accusing him of backing down.

Gorsuch is there for one reason and only one reason and that's Trump. The Democrats would never allow him on the Court and Trump told McConnell to go nuclear because he's not nominating anyone else.

While I agree, if we want this thread to stay open, we can’t drift to politics to far.

I know how government works but it was obvious Trump didn’t when he campaigned as he always said he would get it done on his promises. It was never if it gets to my desk I’ll sign it. He’s arrogant and a lot of talk.

Anyways, I don’t want this discussion to get closed, so I’ll leave it at that. Like I said overall Trumps been pretty good and worlds better than Hillary.

But his talk about age requirements and bumpstock needs to be challenged by his constituents.

USN 67-71.

I didn't know you needed a security clearance to be in a combat zone. Nobody ever told me that.

The president has a security clearance and he's a 5 time draft dodger. WTH does that prove?

Nobody ever got a medal or a service connected disability for having a security clearance or a DD 214 that I'm aware of.

But if it makes you feel better I'm glad you were able to get those.

Now back to bump stocks.

What sense does that make???? He was also campaigning believing on a bigger republican majority in the Senate which he didn't get and that the Republicans in the Senate would do what they said they were going to do and that's repeal Obamacare. All of a sudden a whole lot of Republicans were dong an about face on that even though they were saying prior to 2016 that they had a bill ready to be signed.

North Korea started shooting missiles or did you miss that?

Back down??? You guys don't know what you're talking about.
