Trunk Gun

I keep a cut-down Remington M11 in the vehicle. But out here, it's more about dealing with vehicle-injured wildlife than any kind of human threat. Deer get smacked all the time, and I'd rather have a 12 gauge slug than having to rely on whatever I'm carrying that day (which could be just a .380) to finish them.

Of course, if I ever came home to find a strange vehicle in the drive or something, it'd be a lot more comforting than my CCW pistol.

In Maryland: If you have a 2-3 digit entry Gunvault box in the trunk, next to your unloaded (for instance) Ak rifle, and a loaded 30 rd mag in the Gunvault, you could grab your rifle from a slightly unzipped case, place the other hand on the 2-3 digit reader, and grab a mag from the box as it flips open, charging the rifle in about 6-10 seconds. Not bad for an unloaded gun, and locked ammo. There are other variations on this, like a Garand with en-bloc clips in the vault, or tethered with a regular cable type gunlock, etc. Where there is a will, and some cunning, there is a way....................

Back when I drove a pick-up I kept a length of 1/2" I.D. steel pipe in the bed right behind the driver door. I figured that if some bad guys were after me I could at least get my hands on a formidable weapon if there was not time to unlock the door and get to my pistol.

I do the trunk gun thing very ocassionally. Usually, it is just the handgun i have on me. A long gun gets tossed in when it's feasable (usually meaning in state due to laws) on long distance trips when there is a chance I may be immobile (broken down) with my family. If it's just me and my shadow, cutting and running is ALWAYS an option. With my family, not so much.

This seems like an area ripe to be explored through force-on-force scenario testing. It would be interesting to set up a number of these and run them to see how specific and scripted the situation has to be before the trunk long-gun helps solve the problem. (And, as a side exercise, under what conditions the use remains lawful.)

It would be a lot of work, but fun too. Any takers?

This is not legal advice, I am not a lawyer. IMO any gun is better than no gun. A trunk gun is better than a baseball bat or tire iron. In an unfriendly gun state I would think that a long gun will get you in less trouble than a handgun. Too long a barrel could defeat the purpose so this brings us to something with 16"-18". Winchester Ranger, Stoeger Coach Gun, Mossberg 410, Circuit Judge. Plenty of good choices for a trunk gun.
