Security officers found handguns two straight days at checkpoints at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The Transportation Safety Administration says a .22-caliber was found in the carry-on bag Thursday of a man flying to San Francisco. It was loaded with eight rounds, including a bullet in the chamber. On Wednesday, a Glock pistol was discovered in the carry-on bag of a man headed to Hawaii.

Both men were arrested. In addition to state charges they could be fined by the TSA up to $11,000.

The TSA says more than 1,200 firearms were found nationwide last year in carry-on bags.

Weapons can be transported in checked luggage if they are declared at the ticket counter.

This really begs the question as to where have we gone wrong? How on earth could anyone who owns a gun not realize that placing one in a carry on and not declaring it is a recipe for serious trouble? And LOADED!

I suppose the only thing more stupid than doing this at Sea-Tac would be doing it at JFK or LaGuardia.

1,200 firearms found in carry on bags last year, that's better than 3 guns a day. Unbelievable.

I doubt if any of them deliberately packed the guns. People are forgetful and do stupid stuff. Like the special forces guy last week who forgot he had C-4 in his bag and was stopped by TSA. Sh*t happens.

"Forgetfulness"? When going on a plane flight?

I'm not buying that at all. It's not like they were legal to carry on a plane then all of a sudden aren't...

I'll tell you what happened to me.

A few years ago I was in Africa (Benin) translating for a training mission. When I came back through the airport, I left my Gerber Mk II (which I had owned for about 20 years) in my carry on, in my haste from changing out of uniform I stuffed it in the wrong bag. Oops. I'm sure some Beninois TSA guy has it on his belt now. Oh well. On the bright side, my wife let me buy a new one, and if they hadn't caught it, it would have been found when I re-screened in Paris, they would have had even less sense of humor about it.

Yes "forgetfulness". One of my carry on bags is my work backpack. I usually have a gun and knife in it in addition to computer etc. There have been times where i got to airport and remembered my gun was still in bag. Fortunately, I have always remembered before I got to the screening area and went back and locked gun in car.

You're not thinking this through...

I can nearly guarantee it's not purposeful. But people with many guns or bags can be forgetful, until the TSA screener asks you to step over to the counter... Sadly the penalty will be severe.

Personally, I forgot a speedloader and ammo in a small bag that I use for camping and hiking, in a small pocket in said bag. I grabbed it for the flight, quickly checked it, forgot to check that pocket, and got smacked by TSA. Thankfully just lost the ammo.

I forgot my pocket knife in my pocket and remembered it as I was in line for security. I stuck it in my camera bag and asked them not to scan it as it would ruin the film. (I didn't have any left) I got through security with a large swissarmy knife. It's easy to forget.

I should say that this was pre 9-11 and I was coming from south america back into the states.
I just wonder how many guns get through! A disassembled gun could be stripped down to be pretty inconspicuous. Maybe I shouldn't say that. Don't want those libs to outlaw my glock.:what:

I have a friend that works for the airlines. His wife packed my wedding present in their carryon. A 21 piece kitchen knife set. The hauled her off to a room and harassed her for hours. They laid out all the knives on the table in front of her and took pictures! They delayed them so long they missed all the flights. They had to drive through the night to get to the wedding. He was my best man.

So now you come on here admitting to committing a Federal crime?!?

Navy. lol. I was in south america. I only broke their laws. I stashed it in my checked luggage before I crossed over into the states.

Every time I fly there is someone in front of me in the screening line that seems to have not flown since pre-9/11. They're carrying several bags, they're baffled by the request to remove their shoes, and they have gallon-sized creams and liquids. I can see how some people would simply be stupid enough to think they can carry their gun inside the plane.

Remind me what the problem with most of this is. It is honest citizens making an honest mistake. Why do we need to prosecute them?

It could be that the purpose is to not present an image of bigotry in case a sikh or muslim happens to make the same honest mistake.

Look at it this way: If 1500 guns were found last year, how many were carried for all the years prior to last year, and prior to the TSA, missed by the TSA and other airport security, that were carried by their owners and were never a problem? Seems to me, there is a positive story to be told there.

If you can't remember where you left your gun last, you probably should not be carrying one.
