And its delicious.

I'm used to the sulfurous sweet smell of burnt smokeless powder. I was shooting this weekend and a friend brought Walmart bought Tula ammo in .45, 9mm, and .223.

It was my first time shooting Tula and I noticed that the .45 was quite smoky and smelled distinctly of ballpark hot dogs and mustard. Smelled pretty good actually. Didn't notice this smell with the other calibers... too bad.

I wonder what sort of powder they are using. Anyone else noticed this? Do you know of any other ammo/powder that has a distinct smell?

I hate the smell of Commie ammo. It is also a lot dirtier and gives off a lot of smoke.

As written above, maybe you were hungry when you were shooting.

Surplus Bulgarian 7.62x54R ammo has a tendency to smell like aged ammonia when fired from my Mosin. The same can be said of the Yugo 7.62x39 surplus...yum.

We're talking about various nitrogen compounds here: nitrates and nitrites (for the hot dogs), urea and ammonia for the others. Not sure why one smell would predominate in some rounds.

Great!! I finally figure out what a BBQ gun is and now you spring BBQ ammo on me!!! And to top it off, now I'm hungry!!!

"But the smell, that [hot dogs and mustard] smell... Smelled like... Vict'ry."

Or something like that.

As said, it's likely just cheap/less refined chemicals used in the powder. For target purposes I wouldn't worry. What worries me MORE is the chemicals used in the hot dogs that give rise to similar smell. My sollution is to avoid such highly nitrated and adulterated meats.

In the end therefore: 1) For plinking/target shooting cheapie ammo is probably OK. 2) Spend the savings on better quality cured/encased meats.

Never noticed food smells from ammo , but the last gun i bought at a gun show smells a lot like jerky. In fact, now that i think about it, the gunshow itself smelled a lot like jerky!

The new trend in reloading is moving toward aromatic powders. Unique will soon be available in Pot Roast with Potatoes or a line of aromatherapy smells like "Mtns in May" and my personal favorite " Nantucket Beach". Keep your eyes peeled.

I have this shooting addiction due to a love of the scent of both blackpowder and smokeless. Growing up, I was very involved with model rocketry which only used black powder for the engines and that will be one of my favorite smells until I can't smell anymore at all.

Stop sniffing that finger!!! You don't know where it's been!

I did smell Sonic hamburgers one day, but I couldn't tell you what ammo I was shooting. It's a combo of the mustard and pickles that stands out to me.
When it becomes too strong it almost smells like sweat, not the nasty ,after football practice type, just sweat.

Sorry to hear about your addiction to the sulfurous, glorious smell of Black Powder. :D

It has somewhat of an "egg" smell, does that count?
