Tula .45 smells like hot dogs and mustard

My Mosin Nagant has a unique smell after being fired. I think it smells awesome. The only thing that smells better is the distict smell of Hoppes No. 9 when it comes to cleaning time.

They added the hot dog scent so the cheap steel-cased ammo would remind you less of communism.

I like the smell of most surplus 7.62x54r ammo. A little sharp, but just gunpowder.

Aside from that, I've shot some S&B that smells like a litterbox, and Wolf Match .22 smells like burning soap.

Barnaul 9mm smells like burning rubber. It makes the pistol smell like burning rubber. After cleaning the gun, my hands smell like burning rubber. And I hate that smell :barf:

I had an AR-10 that always smelled like burnt plastic. No matter what ammo, how much I cleaned it, or what lube I used, always still smelt like burnt plastic.

The tula was my first experience with steel cased ammo. The smell sold me. I pretty much only shoot my reloads, but if I ever need to go buy some 230gr FMJ, hot dog Tula will be my first choice.

It's an attempt to make you buy the same brand again. Some Russian ad man probably came up with the idea. Will it work?

Now you have me wondering what the Tula .40 ammo I just bought at Walmart is gonna smell like...I'll probably be more concerned with the smell than aiming and shoot someone's stray cat or something...

I'm glad someone else noticed the hot dog smell of Tula. I thought I was crazy there for a second...You'd think that American Ammo would smell like hot dogs, and Russian Ammo would just smell like Commies and Bears.

And its delicious.

I'm used to the sulfurous sweet smell of burnt smokeless powder. I was shooting this weekend and a friend brought Walmart bought Tula ammo in .45, 9mm, and .223.

It was my first time shooting Tula and I noticed that the .45 was quite smoky and smelled distinctly of ballpark hot dogs and mustard. Smelled pretty good actually. Didn't notice this smell with the other calibers... too bad.

I wonder what sort of powder they are using. Anyone else noticed this? Do you know of any other ammo/powder that has a distinct smell?

Shot some Tula .223 in a match Monday night. The range officer made the comment that it smelled like a cheeseburger. I didn't notice it.

You guys are smelling some itty bitty smells! Try smelling a full charge of white bag behind a 155 mm cannon shell on a foggy morning. I used to love smelling green bag powder when you first break the seal on the cannister.

It's a strange kind of ether like smell. Funny how everything felt kinda groovy for about five minutes after smelling the stuff.:D

The last non-food smell I can remember with a distinct pleasurable sense was leaded gasoline back when I was a kid. Used to love the smell of the gas station.

I can understand the ammonia smell from some ammo. Nitrates used to be harvested from animal waste.

I miss full-lead gas vapors.

Nitrex

I had some factory Nitrex ammo given to me for my .338 Win Mag.

That stuff smelled like a combo of stale cat box and strong ammonia. I used maybe two rounds and gave it away.

The Tula I shot in 9mm and .223 smelled like cat pee. I would have much preferred hotdogs and mustard.

Someone should come out with cinnamon or vanilla smelling ammo.

Random thought: Kahr guns hands down smell the best. I don't know what they use but they smell great.

Funny, I was just out shooting some Tula ammo yesterday with my buddy. My sense of smell is completely fried, so I've never noticed any of the stuff you guys are describing. Strong smelling, yes, but I'm not sensitive enough to tie the odor to cat piss and hot dogs! But he commented after I fired a string of Tula ammo that it smelled like someone trying to overcook rancid, urine marinated ground chuck.:p

Can't say I've noticed anything "meaty" smelling in the 223 i just used black powder is a great cologne that little tinge of sulfer. The smell of smokless powder in the jar is nice too. Can't say I'm old enough to rember leaded gas but the smell that comes out of a carburated 460 big block with no cats ain't bad though. Im more a diesel guy myself. But the best by far is the horses!! Guess I'm not the only crazy one!

I can't remember what it smelled like exactly, but I remember Aguila had a peculiar smell. It may have just been their 60gr .22LR round, the SSS round, or some such. That's the only product of theirs I've ever tried.

All the types of Aguila rimfire ammo I have tried has the same strange odor. It sort of smells like the perm chemicals they use in a beauty salon.

One distinct smell of ammo that I used to love.. The smell of fired paper shotgun shells... Brings back so many GREAT memories.., that along with waking up to the smell of Coffee, bacon and biscuits cooking before some of those hunts...
