The UK has come to this...

Just read an article that says sales of baseball bats in the UK have jumped 6,141% on Amazon.com UK.

http://money.cnn.com/2011/08/09/technology/amazon_riot/
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Aluminum bats, police nightsticks and other weapons dominated the "movers and shakers" list of hot-selling items in Amazon.uk's Sports shop on Tuesday as riots spread across Britain for the third day.
British newspaper The Guardian flagged the Amazon sales spike in its running live-blog on the rioting. The outbreak of violence began in London's Tottenham neighborhood after police fatally shot a local 29-year-old man, Mark Duggan, on August 4. Riots and looting soon spread to other British towns, and the government called in police forces. <SNIP>

At least they still can get their hands on "riot gear". So, what other gear would be useful in a situation like this - aside from firearms?

Grab a saw and find a suitable hardwood tree. Fire extinguishers are good because they can do double duty for putting out dangerous fires and for spraying people in the face.

A car, a tent, and a nice place out in the woods somewhere to go camping for a week while this nonsense blows over.

Im not taking on multiple attackers/looters/rioters with anything less than a firearm. Its bug out time in London if you ask me.

Wasp and Hornet spray. Get kind that will spray 20 feet. The service people around here all carry a can in case a dog attacks. Supposedly it is very effective when sprayed into the face and eyes and no one would question you having a can in the Summer time.

I wonder what would happen if one accidentally held a small flame (lighter) in the spray path of wasp spray.

With the stream ones that shoot long distance, nothing. Comes out too fast. The regular conical spray for roaches or ants, great balls of fire. Tested it myself when I was younger and a lot more foolhardy.

Besides that, not all wasp sprays are the same. Some are highly toxic and/or noxious, others the effect is comparable to being spray with very smelly water that might make you sick a few hours later.

In Britain? Mmmmm... no :) Countryside pub/B&B. Yes!

But seriously, note that the so called "authorities" gave these hooligans a 12h head start, and still allow them to pillage and loot with impunity. Important lesson there.

Apologies if this message is redundant, but following the news of the riots across the pond reminds me of the saying: "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." I don't see these types of events happening on a large scale in a city like Houston or Dallas. The criminal element would have to think hard about the consequences if they openly accosted - potentially armed and dangerous - citizens.

New York, on the other hand, where guns are effectively outlawed...

Convenient timing, though.
ala "Wag The Dog"...

I think pepper spray (albeit a HUGE canister) would be ideal in these riot situations.

Well, I guess pepper spray is illegal in the UK......... wow!

And a week ago people would have said there was no way London would be in flames and in riot over cops shooting back at someone who appears to have shot at them first.

It's very dangerous to try to predict the mob mentality. It would be nice to think such things could not happen in a country where the citizens are armed, but the mob mentality doesn't really take things like that into consideration.

Baseball bats would be near the top of my list although I would probably quickly fashion a good strong staff. A large knife might come in handy for that "shelter". Sheets, tarps and body bags...

I would not leave as others have said. I would try to stand my ground with "my baseball bat" along with other friends, neighbors, and business owners. :)

I suspect things might be a bit different here in the US than Britain. Some have learned from the riots of the 60's and the Los Angelas riots not to mention post-Hurricane Katrina South Lousiana and Mississippi. At least the majority of the looters and havoc creators would need to watch their backs for something other than plastic bullets. That would certainly have a tempering effect on things.

Let's stay focused on the question of what can practically be done by our UK members who do not have the firearms options we have here.

It is no surprise that baseball bat sales are out of the park, but consider that they may not be being purchased just by the non-rioters.

A trip to the country to get out of harms way would be the first order of business.

Self defense would be in layers. Crossbow/self bow, wasp spray, bat/machete, knife.

Have you guys heard about whats goin on outside of the Wisconsin State Fair? The riots in London arent that far flung from whats been happening to people as they leave...........

You guys really don't think it could happen here? Hard to believe that you're all too young to remember the Rodney King riots in LA:

Widespread looting, assault, arson and murder occurred, and property damages topped roughly $1 billion. In all, 53 people died during the riots and thousands more were injured.

hso,

They have a "firearms option", but it is going to take political action (regime change spray) to make it happen.

"Survival will be tribal". Meaning that your best defense in a situation like this is co-operation with people you can trust. Single individual armed with improvised weapons is as good as dead if he has to face a flash mob.

This is sad, you see this happening in places all over the world. It's like, what is suddenly happening to everyone?

It's inevitable that the thugs will get out of hand when Political Correctness won't allow the general population to even admit that they are thugs, and that mindset is well entrenched here, especially in urban centers, pop-culture, and the MSM. I believe what's going on in the UK will become a more frequent phenomenon here in the US, armed "law-abiding" citizens or not.

I'm wondering if those store owners boarding up their shops are thinking back about past military service and are really wishing they had a rifle or shotgun for property protection.

It doesn't look like those cameras all over the place are protecting anyone worth a hoot.

Can we hope that the Conservatives come up with a simple solution? An armed Englishman?

Believe it or not, molotov cocktails do good job for home defense. Small ones made using detergent and gasoline in Christmas ornaments are especially effective as they break very easily and are a handy size for throwing. Cricket bats are fun as are car antenna. Sadly firearms for protection are just about regulated out of existence.
