There are no ID requirements for the purchase of rifle, shotgun, or handgun ammunition here is Tennessee. I've purchsed all 3 in the past month and did not have to present any ID nor was there any record made of my ID.

Christopher Swanson
Minnesota

No records kept or ID required to buy ammo here. I've puchased recently from gun shows, wal mart, the range, etc, no BS here.

SOUTH CAROLINA

No checks at all! Pistol, rifle, shotgun..... I have purchased at WalMart, Dicks Sporting Goods, and many gun stores.

Los Angeles city is the one PUSHING for this bill statewide, so I know the situation down there well. Am expecting the results of a Public Records Act Request soon for details (as in, how many busts are they really making?).

The Governor's office staff are the ones asking how common something like this is.

By PM, we have positive reports (no ammo registration) on:

Alabama

Ohio

Kentucky

Indiana

Conn.

Kentucky

Wisconsin

Pennsylvania

Plus confirmation on New Jersey, how they record "registered gun owner card numbers" but not high volumes of paper like the Calif proposal.

Keep it coming but no need for repeats. Particularly curious about Hawaii and Rhose Island...

Ammo purchase in Arizona last month.
1,000 rounds of ammo in Texas in June

Neither of the states required ID or anything else but the funds to pay for it.

Bought ammo from Walmart last Saturday (7/31/04) in Utah. The salesperson only had to check my ID to verify that I was over 21. No other records were kept except for date of birth.

PM me if you need more.

Do not have to sign for ammo at Gun Shops or Gun Shows

Give 'em Hell, Jim

I've never had to show an ID at a gun show. But I've purchased quite a bit of ammo from www.aimsurplus.com, which is located in Middletown, Ohio, and they require a copy of a State issued Drivers License or State Identification to verify date of birth. Perhaps this is an internal policy? I don’t know.

Southern Ohio Gun (SOG), which is located in Lebanon, Ohio, requires you to submit an “Ammunition Statement†before processing an ammunition order. The statements includes an entry field for driver’s license number. Here it is:

Jim,

Common misconception in New Jersey law about the FID card for ammo purchases. This is NOT TRUE!!! You do not need an FID card to purchase rifle, shotgun, or handgun ammo. All that is needed is a photo identification such as a driver's license or military ID....your FID card CAN be used if you lack such a photo ID, but it is NOT required.

Also only ammo that is to be fired in a handgun is to be recorded. If someone is buying .357 magnums to be used in a lever action rifle then it is not required to be logged. A letter straight from the NJ State Police firearms unit tells dealers to strike up a conversation with a buyer and ask what kind of firearm he/she plans to use the ammo in if it can be fired in either rifle/pistol.

I live in Iowa.
Bought 300 rounds of 9mm 2 days ago. No paperwork, no ID.

Regarding Molon Labe's post above, I can confirm that Ohio retailers do not require registration for direct ammo sales.

I have purchased ammo anonomously at West of the Pecos, Jensons, Wal-Mart and Rincon-Concepts (well, I am on a first-name basis with the owner of R-C, but he certainly did not record the purchase), plus a couple gun shows at the Pima County Fairgrounds here in Tuscon.

Several places throughout Ohio.
Pick up ammo walk to counter pay with cash, out the door. No ID or questions. WalMart the same story... I am over 45 so age isn't a problem.

Jiim -

I have made 3 ammo purchases in the past month locally:

.38 special at an Oshmans.
.223 at the WalMart.
9mm at local gunshop - Praco Pawn & gun.

None of them required ID and I paid in cash.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Sec. 57-12. Sale of fixed ammunition.

_ _ _(a)_ _ _Legislative intent. The purpose of this section is to provide support to state and local law enforcement officials in their efforts against crime and violence by placing controls on the flow of dangerous ammunition, in addition to those provided by federal law, and to encourage compliance with the state police department's program of voluntary firearm registration. It is not the purpose of this section to place any undue or unnecessary restrictions or burdens on law-abiding citizens with respect to the acquisition, possession, or use of firearms appropriate to the purpose of hunting, trapshooting, target shooting, personal protection, or any other lawful activity, or to discourage or eliminate the private ownership or use of firearms by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes. It is not the purpose of this section to create, nor does it permit the creation of, any separate system of county registration of firearms or ammunition, or the levying of any county fee in connection with any registration of firearms or ammunition. It is specifically not the intent of this section to serve as a revenue generating measure.

_ _ _(b)_ _ _Registration of ammunition dealers. Any ammunition dealer (as defined in 18 United States Code, section 921 et seq.) who conducts business in Montgomery County is required to register with the Montgomery County department of police by maintaining on file with that department, at all times, a valid, current copy of his federal ammunition dealer's license.

_ _ _(c)_ _ _Conditions for sale. No ammunition dealer may sell fixed ammunition to any other person, unless:

_ _ __ _ _(1)_ _ _The sale is made in person;

_ _ __ _ _(2)_ _ _The purchaser exhibits, at the time of sale, a valid registration certificate or, in the case of a nonresident, proof that the firearm is lawfully possessed in the jurisdiction where the purchaser resides;

_ _ __ _ _(3)_ _ _The fixed ammunition to be sold is of the same caliber or gauge as the firearm described in the registration certificate, or other proof in the case of a nonresident; and

_ _ __ _ _(4)_ _ _The purchaser signs a receipt for the ammunition which shall be maintained by the licensed dealer for a period of one (1) year from the date of sale.

_ _ _(d)_ _ _Exceptions. The provisions of this section shall not apply to the sale of fixed ammunition:

_ _ __ _ _(1)_ _ _Which is suitable for use only in rifles or shotguns generally available in commerce, or to the sale of component parts of these types of ammunition;

_ _ __ _ _(2)_ _ _To any person licensed to possess fixed ammunition under an act of Congress and the law of the jurisdiction where the person resides or conducts business; or

_ _ __ _ _(3)_ _ _To any law enforcement officer of federal, state, local or any other governmental entity, if the officer has in his possession a statement from the head of his agency stating that the fixed ammunition is to be used in the officer's official duties.

_ _ _(e)_ _ _Penalties. Any ammunition dealer who sells fixed ammunition in violation of the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a class C violation, pursuant to section 1-19 of the Montgomery County Code, punishable only by a civil penalty in the amount of fifteen dollars ($15.00).

_ _ _(f)_ _ _Exception for incorporated municipalities. This section shall not be effective in any incorporated municipality which by law has authority to enact a law on the same subject. If any such incorporated municipality adopts this section and requests the county to enforce the adopted provisions thereof within its corporate limits, the county may thereafter administer and enforce the same within the incorporated municipality. The county executive is authorized to enter into agreements with incorporated municipalities to enforce and administer the provisions so adopted and to collect the administrative costs of implementation from such municipalities. (1983 L.M.C., ch. 50,_§ 2.)_ _ _

_ _ _Editor’s note--The above section was held to be invalid by the Court of Appeals in Montgomery County, Maryland, et al. v. Atlantic Guns, Inc., et al., 302 Md. 540, 489 A.2d 1114 (1985)._ The above section is interpreted in Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission v. Elgin, 53 Md.App. 452, 454 A.2d 408 (1983).

Registration Repeal

The Mississippi Senate gave final approval to HB 764, an NRA-supported bill by Rep. Warner McBride (D-10) and Sen. Tommy Robertson (R-51). This bill repeals a long-standing state law requiring gun dealers to maintain a registry of all ammunition purchases (NRA-ILA Fax Alert, 3-8-02).

I have purchased rifle, pistol and shotgun ammo in the states of Oklahoma and Ohio anonymously in the past two weeks.

Tony King
Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Kim in Arkansas no records on ammo. Wal-mart makes sure you are 21 to buy handgun ammo otherwise no questions. Other stores no questions except how many did you say you wanted? Yes ma'am we will carry them out for you.:D

I have purchased ammunition in 3 states in the past 6 months: Michigan, as a resident, both rifle and handgun ammo; Tennessee, as a non-resident, I believe both handgun ammo and .22; and Ohio, hand gun ammunition. I was never asked for identification in any of the states.

Dbl0Kevin: The FID#, if known, is recorded in the book.

In my case, I was a member @ the gunshop/range, they had all my stuff on file. If you where a member, your purchases would go against your membership for a hefty discount. @ the end of the day, they'd run a report of members x handgun ammo, and transcribe it into the book. If they didn't know you, you'd be ID'd and recorded on the spot.
